You'll hardly hear Moldovan or Romanian here 🗣️; all communication, paperwork, and even signs are in Russian (sometimes Ukrainian is heard, but very rarely). Border control is strict only on the Transnistrian side—there's a checkpoint right at the entrance, but there is none on the Moldovan side (politics, sort of like Kosovo). At the border, I said I was transiting without an overnight stay, and they gave me a migration card—I could hang out for 12 hours 🪪! It's the perfect freedom for a quick exploration. Getting between Chisinau and Odessa is easy—the minibuses are tinted, the vibe is awesome, like entering another reality. They run every 20 minutes, and the price is about 300 RUB 💸 (Russian rubles). It really feels like I'm going to Abkhazia... We took a long weekend to Moldova from London, flying to Chisinau via a short stop in Vienna. We spent 4 days exploring the city and took a Day trip to Transnistria, a small breakaway republic to the east. It felt like stepping back in time with lots of old buildings from the Soviet Union. There are statues to Lenin and Soviet iconography dotted throughout the city and region. It really is a fascinating place. While in Tiraspol make sure you visit one of the Soviet themed restaurants for a really memorable experience. The Republic of Moldova 🇲🇩 has a de facto autonomous state (unrecognized state) called the Transnistria Republic, which mainly dominates the eastern bank of the Dniester River. On this trip, I took a one-day excursion to Bender in Transnistria and its capital, Tiraspol, so I'll record it here. ◯Security There are no pickpockets, robbers, or other crimes like those in major cities in South America or Western Europe, so it's completely safe. However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' danger level is level 3, so please travel at your own risk. If you lose your passport here, the Japanese government may not be able to respond. That's why it's level 3. Ukraine is just around the corner, and Russian troops are stationed there, so that may also have an impact. ◯Access Take a marshrutka (minibus) from the bus terminal in Chisinau. The fare was 48 lei on the way there and 75 lei on the way back. Trolley buses run within Transnistria. ◯Currency The Transnistrian ruble. You can exchange it for Moldovan leu, euros, or US dollars at the exchange office. Credit cards are not accepted at all, so you need to have cash. It seems that many restaurants and souvenir shops accept Moldovan leu. ◯Prices It's cheap. I was full for 500 yen a shawarma. Moldova is cheap in the first place. (※This is only compared to Europe) ◯Language Russian English is hardly spoken.
