Kotor is probably one of those cities where in 3 days you manage both to soak up the atmosphere and not to wear yourself out rushing around. It's compact, scenic, with mountains and clear sea in a single frame. I'm sharing a day-by-day itinerary, tested on myself, a trip that became a surprise for my wife's birthday. One important thing about the season right away: we were there in March. That means empty, without the cruise crowds, but the serpentine road where people drive is unfortunately still closed, it opens at the end of May. Keep that in mind when planning your trip. In other words, if you want quiet and relatively moderate prices, then March is a great choice; if you want attractions and warmth, better go in summer. So… 📍 Day 1. The Old Town We started with the Old Town, which is also where we booked our hotel. It's the heart of Kotor, a medieval labyrinth of stone streets under UNESCO protection. It's easy to get lost here, but also easy enough to find your way again, since the area is fairly small. What's worth seeing: · St. Tryphon's Cathedral, 12th century, the city's main church · Cosy squares with the churches of St. Luke and St. Nicholas · The cat park by the North Gate Kotor is a city of cats in general, they're everywhere here, there are even cat houses and a museum. Our child sat with them for about 30 minutes, feeding and stroking them, they're very tame here. In the evening we walked along the waterfront by the bay. It's super romantic, peaceful, and that very place where time stands still. 📍 Day 2. The climb to St. John's Fortress The main highlight of the trip. The climb up the Ladder of Kotor, around 1,350 steps, up to the San Giovanni fortress. Not easy, but the views are worth it: all of Kotor from a bird's-eye view, the bay laid out below you. We made it harder for ourselves and started the climb from the other side, up the serpentine. It turned out later that this is the free route, while the steps are the paid one. The climb took about an hour, we barely stopped, maybe a couple of times for water. Even our 10-year-old found it relatively easy. It's best to head up an hour or hour and a half before sunset, to enjoy an incredibly beautiful sundown. After coming back down, your legs may ache and tremble a bit if you're not in shape. So it's better to spend the rest of the day in cafes and wandering the streets of the old town. 📍 Day 3. Perast and Tivat We headed out beyond Kotor, and it was worth it. Perast is a tiny, toy-like little town on the shore of the bay: stone houses, bell towers, a single waterfront and complete calm. We got there by taxi in 15 minutes. A magical place, steeped in serenity and the total absence of any cares at all. Tivat and Porto Montenegro are also worth visiting, and that's also 20 minutes by taxi. A luxury marina with yachts, expensive boutiques and restaurants won't leave you indifferent. The contrast with medieval Kotor is striking. Be sure to stroll along the waterfront, it's fairly long and winding and lets you look at this beautiful place from different angles. 💰 A few words on money and logistics Montenegro is fairly expensive, not only for tourists but also for those who live there, take it from someone who lived there for almost a year. But travel is exactly what's meant to put experiences first and leave you ready to pay for them. · A taxi to neighbouring towns – 20 euros · A good-level hotel – 80-150 euros a night for two · Restaurants – 10-12 euros average bill per person If you want to save on food, there's a big mall with a supermarket nearby, where you can stock up on fruit, water, vegetables, snacks, and everything you consume daily that doesn't need cooking. ✨ To sum up 3 days in Kotor is the perfect amount of time for a trip: you manage to see the city, climb the mountain, make a little excursion out to the bay, and simply have a good wander too. Most tourists view Tivat merely as a transportation hub. However, the city boasts a fascinating and unique transformation: in just a couple of decades, it has evolved from a closed naval port into a modern Mediterranean resort. ✈️ Tivat International Airport (TIV) Tivat Airport serves as the main air gateway to the Montenegrin coast, located just 3 km from downtown. Thanks to its proximity to the Bay of Kotor, landing here is considered one of the most scenic in Europe: planes approach the runway at a low altitude, gliding right over the water and yacht masts against a backdrop of majestic mountains. A ready-made walking route covering the city's key highlights: 🏛️ Church of Saint Sava and Magnolia Square. Start your stroll at the Church of Saint Sava, featuring a Serbian-Byzantine style with a striking facade of alternating light and dark stone. Right next to it is the administrative hub, Magnolia Square, complete with fountains and cafes. Be sure to pop into a local bakery (Pekara) on the corner to grab a burek—a traditional Balkan savory pastry filled with cheese or meat. 🌴 Pine Promenade and Pilot Tower. A wide, palm-lined avenue leads you down to the sea and the Pine Promenade. The main landmark here is the historic stone Clock Tower, which once housed the port's maritime pilot office. You can often spot the legendary sailing training ship "Jadran", built in 1933, docked at the pier. ⚓️ Porto Montenegro Complex. Just beyond the promenade lies Porto Montenegro, a world-class superyacht marina. Until 2007, this site was home to the Austro-Hungarian naval shipyard "Arsenal". A massive red-and-white port crane has been preserved on the pier as a nod to its industrial past. Stroll down Strada Naval, a boulevard lined with boutiques and citrus trees, which leads to the waterfront right by the luxurious, Venetian-style Regent Hotel. 🧭 Kalimanj Harbor. For a glimpse of the city's less touristy side, head over to Kalimanj Harbor. Tucked away in a storm-protected cove, you'll find hundreds of small boats belonging to locals gently bobbing on the water, with Mount Vrmac towering in the background. ✅️ What else to visit nearby: 1. Naval Heritage Collection: located in the northern part of Porto Montenegro. The star of the show is the actual Yugoslav submarine P-821 "Heroj", which you can explore on a guided tour. 2. Great City Park: established in 1892 by Austrian sailors who brought back exotic plants from all corners of the globe. Today, it stands as one of the largest botanical gardens on the Adriatic.

Montenegro 🇲🇪 The most underrated country in Europe has already been talked about enough. Originally, I just thought since I was here, I’d add Montenegro to the last three days of my Croatia trip. But the atmosphere of the bays and ancient towns here surprisingly rivals that of the South of France or Southern Italy. Montenegro, this treasure small country on the Adriatic coast, offers an experience far beyond expectations with its beauty of mountains, sea, and towns… Quick itinerary overview: Day 1️⃣ Dubrovnik → Kotor → Budva: Take a bus from Dubrovnik’s main bus station directly to Kotor (actual travel time is longer than official estimates due to traffic along the Montenegrin coast). Then take a taxi to the car rental point (there’s no ride-hailing app, so you need to message the taxi company via WhatsApp to call a taxi). Drive to Budva and check in. Day 2️⃣ Budva → Perast: In the morning, head to Sveti Stefan Island (navigate up the hill to the church). Return to Budva for lunch at Restoran Vista Vidikovac, whose terrace overlooks the entire old town of Budva. After lunch, walk from the hotel parking lot to the Ballet Dancer statue for photos. If time allows, explore Budva’s old town. In the afternoon, drive to Perast, take a detour up the mountain to Horizont Bar, which offers a spectacular panoramic view of Kotor Bay from a high vantage point (a drink purchase is required). Stay overnight in Perast’s old town and watch the sunset. Day 3️⃣ Perast → Kotor: Stroll through the peaceful Perast old town shrouded in morning mist. Around noon, drive back to Kotor and find the entrance to St. John Fortress in the old town (ticket required). Climb to the top of the fortress to take in the full view of Kotor Bay and the town. Return the same way and wander around Kotor’s old town. Stay overnight in Kotor to prepare for an early flight the next day. Are you ready for the most delicious and hearty meat-lover's dinner in Montenegro? 😋 Then I'm calling all grill enthusiasts to Nadoveza. 🍽️ It’s a small and completely unassuming little cafe just outside of Tivat, but don’t be quick to judge it by its facade. Inside, you’ll find an authentic interior, massive portions, and incredibly mouthwatering ćevapi. The vibe feels a lot like an old biker buddy's country house: you're a bit surprised at first, then you settle in, and finally, you realize this is exactly how it's meant to be here. ✨ The menu isn't huge, but I highly recommend jumping straight to the main event—ćevapi. Ćevapi are small, grilled sausages made from minced or ground meat. It’s one of the most iconic dishes in the Balkans, usually served with flatbread, onions, ajvar, kajmak, or a simple side. The word itself stems from the Turkish kebap, and the dish has been a staple of Balkan cuisine since the days of Ottoman influence. 💖 While you wait for your main course, here's what your group should share: Appetizer Platter — 10/10. On the plate: artisanal cheeses with rich flavors and textures, homemade sausage, prosciutto, olives, fresh rustic tomatoes, and a slightly spicy spread for your bread. You'll want to devour the whole platter yourself, but pace yourself: the main course is still to come. Ćevapi — 10/10 Pictured here are three portions piled onto a single plate. We ordered this for a group of four and had no idea there would be so much food. We ended up taking the leftovers to go. The sausages come sizzling right off the grill: tender, juicy, and piping hot. You might think you can’t manage more than three, but they’re so outrageously good that it’s hard to stop. Fries and veggies are already included as a side with the ćevapi, so there's no need to order anything extra. Salad — 8/10 Just look at these portion sizes: flavorful, farm-fresh veggies buried under a mountain of soft, delicate cheese. Simple, satisfying, and undeniably Balkan. Montenegro one of the underrated countries in Eastern Europe. Capital Podgorica is not that touristy and cool. Budva is a beach shore town which is one of the main attractions for swimming and tours. Night life and food is an experience. The next attraction is 30minutes away which is Kotor. Old town and cruise ships must be a colour for eyes. The town is surrounded by black mountains. Other attractions are blue cave, perast, our lady of rocks etc.

The walk is the 1.5 km olive-grove lane from Radovići to the Cape Arza lighthouse, where Hypnum and Tortula pad the dry-stone terrace walls and the ancient Olea europaea trunks drip with Cetraria. I took the Tivat→Radovići bus (€2, 30 min, cash), walked at 7:30 a.m. in April. The olives are žutica and bjelica cultivars, some 700 yrs old, still producing. The mossy half is the 800 m where the lane narrows between 5 m-high terrace walls and the north face stays damp from the pre-dawn Bora wind. The Cape Arza lighthouse (1886) is the turnaround — 15 m tower, 30 m cliff, electric blue water. Mistake: I walked in August — Bora wind dead, no moss, 38°C, olive terrace reflecting heat, 10 min and I was cooked. April–May or Sept–Oct. Second mistake: I picked an olive off a tree — local farmer on a tractor: "that tree is 400 yrs old, €50 fine, hands off". Third: I paid €5 for a "Luštica map" in Tivat — the lane is a single road, the map was a regional highway sheet, useless. Buy in Radovići: a €3 pršut (prosciutto) sandwich, not the €15 Tivat marina. Gear: 1.5 L water, €15 hat, €10 shell — Bora can flip 15°C in 1 hr. Local rule: walk free, lighthouse free exterior, no drone near the lighthouse (coastguard), stay on the lane, the terrace walls are 500-yr-old dry-stone not a climbing frame. The moss on the terrace wall is the Bora's catch — step on cut stone. Opinion: Luštica is the €0 peninsula that Montenegro's tourism board forgets while Kotor crowds the bay, and the mossy olive-grove lane to Cape Arza is the 40-min half with zero cruise-ship dust. Should the Luštica Foundation add a €2 honour box at Radovići for terrace-wall repair, or keep it a free walk? I'd add it. Would you bus 30 min from Tivat for a mossy 500-yr-old olive terrace walk to a 19th-c lighthouse?

One such restaurant was in the fishing village of Bigova. This was once the site of Grispolis, an ancient port that sank during the earthquake of 1664.
