Tone District travel guide and discussion

📍Address: 1650 Morishita, Showa, Tone District, Gunma 379-1204, Japan https://maps.app.goo.gl/uz4fdstQX6DdC7PQ8?g_st=com.google.maps.preview.copy ⏰Opening Hours: Open daily from 10:30 AM to 7:00 PM The farmers market in Japan offers a wide variety of agricultural products that are fresh and new. There are also many other items available for purchase. Additionally, there is a food zone and a shop zone selling various snacks.

Hidden deep in the mountains of Minakami, this historic ryokan has been welcoming guests for decades and is famous for its spectacular riverside hot springs surrounded by forests and mountains. Getting here was easier than I expected. From Tokyo, I took the Joetsu Shinkansen to Jomo-Kogen Station, which takes a little over an hour. Guests staying overnight can reserve a complimentary shuttle bus from either Jomo-Kogen Station or Minakami Station directly to the ryokan. The staff welcomed us warmly and guided us to our room inside the traditional wooden ryokan building. After checking in, we changed into our yukata and started feeling like we were truly living in Japan rather than simply visiting it. The hotel offers many different yukata colors and patterns for guests to choose from. It sounds like a small detail, but it made the whole experience feel even more special. The room was beautifully traditional with tatami flooring, sliding shoji doors, and a cozy tea corner overlooking the snowy scenery outside. At night, futon beds were prepared directly on the tatami floor. I expected it to be hard, but it was incredibly comfortable and I slept so well. Takaragawa Onsen is famous for its enormous outdoor baths built right next to the river. Some baths are mixed-gender while others are separated for men and women, so guests can choose whichever feels most comfortable. Unlike many people imagine, you don't have to worry about being naked in the mixed baths. The ryokan provides a special bath dress for guests to wear inside the mixed onsen, so the atmosphere feels very relaxed and family-friendly. I visited during winter and it was one of the most magical travel moments I've ever experienced. Snow was falling softly around us while the mountains, trees, and riverbanks turned completely white. The contrast between the freezing air and the steaming hot mineral water was unforgettable. My face felt cold from the snowflakes while my body stayed perfectly warm in the onsen. In the evening, everyone changed back into their yukata and headed to dinner. Sitting in the dining room surrounded by other guests dressed in yukata while enjoying a traditional Japanese kaiseki meal made me feel as if I had somehow travelled back in time. There is also a day-use onsen option available for visitors who don't stay overnight, with admission around 2,000 yen including the bath dress rental. #takaragawaonsen #takaragawa #onsenhotel #japanonsen

#Oze #Gunma #Niigata #Fukushima I went to Oze. I visited the Gunma side, but it also spans Niigata and Fukushima, so you can enjoy nature over a very wide area. You have to travel by bus through the areas where private cars are prohibited, but there are many buses and I had a comfortable ride with almost no waiting time. It's probably difficult to see all the areas in just one day, but as of October, the autumn leaves are at their peak, so I'd like to go again next year if I can! #Breathtaking views

“Takaragawa Onsen Osenkaku” (宝川温泉汪泉閣) is a ryokan-style resort in a beautiful open-air hot spring area in Minakami City, Gunma Prefecture. Every season changes…cold…spring…hot…fall We found that in the middle of autumn, this inn is as beautiful as an oil painting, with colors painted on paper. In November, the temperature drops by 6-7 degrees Celsius in the morning. Deciduous trees such as maples and ginkgo trees begin to adapt to the long winter by shedding their leaves to reduce water loss. This is a natural phenomenon that turns red and yellow in sequence. The beautiful view is created to impress us when we visit. It takes about 3-4 hours to travel from Tokyo, and we will arrive at the “million-dollar view” inn. 🍷 #Million-dollar view inn

📍 Forest Resort Sarugakyo Seikoso Address: 1470-9 Aimata, Minakami, Tone District, Gunma Prefecture, Japan If your ideal getaway isn't about rushing through city checklists, but rather finding a place to truly disconnect and engage in a deep dialogue with nature, Sarugakyo Seikoso is your perfect destination. This hot spring inn, nestled between mountains and water, defines comfort through the passage of time. Here, every morning you wake up to rolling peaks and the shimmering waters of Lake Akaya, a scene so tranquil it compels you to take a deep, soulful breath. 💖 【A Healing Ritual of Lake Views and Natural Springs】 The hotel’s most incomparable highlight is the "private lake view" enjoyed right from your room. Whether it's the morning mist rolling in or the golden glow of a sunset, the scenery of Lake Akaya acts as a gentle remedy for the soul. The free-flowing Sarugakyo Onsen allows your tired mind to settle amidst the rising steam. It doesn't aim for overwhelming grandeur; instead, its perfect temperature and clarity create a flawless sense of healing ritual. 🍚 【The Art of Seasonal Washoku】 The dining experience here is a masterclass in "local ingredients and artisanal craftsmanship." Dinner is a carefully curated Kaiseki meal designed around seasonal themes. Each dish feels like a tribute to the local land, blending peak seasonal ingredients with exquisite presentation. Guest feedback highlights that the magic lies not in over-the-top luxury, but in the layers of flavor brought by seasonal changes and the surprising level of care, making every bite feel like a story. 🌳 【A Slower Pace of Life】 The design philosophy of Sarugakyo Seikoso is a literal escape from the fast lane. It is surrounded by lakeside walking paths and quiet forest vistas, shifting the vacation experience from merely "seeing the sights" to "living within the scenery." Even just slowing down on your balcony to watch the breeze move across the distant mountains brings a profound sense of comfort and synchronization with time. 🗺️ 【Practical Travel Guide】 · Best Suited For: Solo travelers seeking deep healing (the "Solo Plan" is very friendly), couples, or families who appreciate high-quality nostalgia and those who truly value lake views and the onsen experience. "Slow living" is the biggest draw here. · Transport Advice: While the hotel is tucked away in nature, the surroundings are peaceful. Since major facilities (the hotel and lakeside areas) are best accessed by car, allow plenty of travel time. If arriving by train, be sure to confirm shuttle or taxi schedules in advance to ensure the journey itself remains a peaceful transition. · Stay Tip: The inn is intimate, with only 7 rooms, most of which face Lake Akaya and the Mikuni Mountains—this is its greatest asset. However, as it is a traditional Japanese ryokan, some facilities may show "traces of time," which is simply part of its unique, vintage charm.

📍 Minakami Kogen Hotel 200 Address: 6152-1 Fujiwara, Minakami-machi, Tone-gun, Gunma Prefecture, Japan If your holiday goal isn't just hitting "Instagrammable spots" but truly wanting to slow down and let the mountains heal your exhausted daily life, this might be the perfect retreat. Minakami Kogen Hotel 200 feels like a ritualistic healing journey surrounded by mountains. It’s not just a place to stay; it’s a hot spring sanctuary where you can completely "unplug" from the urban hustle. 🌿 【The Perfect Setup for Zoning Out】 The biggest highlight here is how all the ultimate leisure facilities—hot springs, pools, and ski slopes—are integrated into the same mountain area. Whether it’s a steaming hot spring bath in the early morning, a sun-drenched spa on the lawn in the afternoon, or a whole weekend dedicated to alpine sports, the layout is incredibly smooth. For travelers looking for a week-long, slow-paced vacation, this setup significantly reduces the "friction" between activity and rest. Once you check in, the vacation truly begins! 🏞️ 【Mountain View Rooms & Wilderness Vibes】 Most rooms boast spectacular mountain views, offering a cozy sense of being embraced by nature. While the amenities are comprehensive, the unique "mountain resort" atmosphere makes the room itself a peaceful retreat. Based on the experience, this is ideal for travelers who prefer to feel the changes in the surrounding ecology and landscape rather than just seeking urban luxury. 🍴 【Dining & The Rhythm of Life】 Beyond the high-quality rooms and facilities, the on-site restaurants, cafes, and bars add layers to the resort experience. The key word for dining here is "slow." You don't need to rush to the next destination; you can simply enjoy the flow of time from morning to night within the hotel. This leisure is incredibly relaxing. 🚶♀️ 【Who is this for?】 · 💖 Recommended for: Couples or families seeking healing and quality leisure time. The diverse activities and hot spring facilities allow everyone to find their own slow pace. · 🏃♀️ Perfect for: Parents and children or groups of friends who love outdoor sports. With options ranging from skiing to golf, no one will ever feel bored. · ☕️ Note to Planners: If you are a traveler who prefers fast-paced urban movement and proximity to major transportation hubs, the driving time and transfers around the area are factors you'll need to consider in advance. 🗺️ 【Practical Travel Guide】 · Best Seasons: Given its direct access to ski slopes, Winter (December to February) is the top choice. For relaxing in hot springs or viewing mountain scenery, Spring and Autumn are also very pleasant. · Stay Reminder: The hotel features multiple facilities like hot springs and pools. We recommend confirming the opening hours for the Spa and baths when booking to ensure a smooth itinerary. · Transportation Advice: Starting from the nearest major train station (such as JR Yubiso Station), renting a car and driving yourself is highly recommended. This allows you to include the scenic drive as part of your journey rather than relying solely on public transport.

📍 Minakami Onsen Aratashi Address: 740-3 Yubara, Minakami-machi, Tone-gun, Gunma, Japan If traditional Japanese hot spring ryokans provide a heavy sense of nostalgia where time stands still, then Aratashi Minakami offers a "high-quality, chic healing experience." It perfectly interprets the demands of modern people who seek rejuvenation while refusing to compromise on aesthetics and design. This accommodation eschews overly ornate decorations or sprawling facilities; instead, it uses minimalist lines, natural light and shadows, and the flow of hot spring water to create a private art space dedicated to "tranquility and emptying the mind." I would position it as: a gift to all urban travelers with high standards for lifestyle aesthetics who long for a complete escape from daily noise. 🌳 [A Cinematic Escape: Where Minimalism Meets Nature] Designed with zero redundancy, every element here serves to highlight "light" and "nature." As you walk toward your room or the large bathhouse, you feel the fresh, valley-like mountain air unique to the Minakami Onsen region. This atmosphere makes the entire stay feel like stepping into a professional photo shoot. It proves that true luxury isn't about gold-leafed opulence, but rather presenting the most natural and pure aesthetics in the simplest way. 🛁 [Private Serenity: Your Exclusive Onsen Ritual] Rather than the lively, communal atmosphere of large public baths, Aratashi emphasizes the "individual ritual of letting go." With rooms featuring semi-open-air or private independent baths, this level of seclusion is an irreplaceable luxury. Imagine sitting alone by the circulating spring water, listening to the sounds of the surrounding forest, and letting the white mist envelop you—that moment of peace and exclusivity is the highest grade of healing. 🍽️ [A Culinary Reset: Modern Creative Dining] The hotel's dining style perfectly echoes its design philosophy—exquisite, minimalist, yet full of surprises. The focus here is no longer on traditional, heavy Kaiseki banquets, but on "creative cuisine" that blends local Gunma ingredients with modern culinary techniques. This turns the dining experience into an exhibition for both the eyes and the palate; each dish is a masterpiece designed for the traveler, reflecting local character with an international touch. 🗺️ [Pro-Tip: Planning Your Perfect Getaway] Since the hotel itself is a perfect sanctuary for stillness, I recommend treating the surrounding area as your "exploration fix." Spend your morning visiting the bustling Yubatake district to soak in the local energy, but by the afternoon, switch back to minimalist mode: shed the external noise and retreat to your room or private bath. This intentional shift in atmosphere is exactly what allows the soul to achieve a total reset.

📍Kinmorikan Seseragi Ryokan Address: 544 Tanigawa, Minakami-cho, Tone-gun, Gunma Prefecture Located in the Tanigawa area of Gunma, renowned as "Japan's original landscape," time seems to move slower here. For women seeking deep healing and with a high demand for historical atmosphere, Kinmorikan Seseragi is an excellent destination. It's not just a ryokan offering hot spring baths, but a unique and immersive resort experience that weaves together "flowing hot springs" and "the beauty of the changing seasons"! 💖【A Natural Hot Spring Spa Under the Guiding Light of Time】 The most captivating feature here is the legendary "four-source flowing hot spring." This flowing hot spring doesn't have a constant temperature; instead, it presents a rich variety of layers that change with nature and time—from refreshing to warm, each soak is like a conversation with the temperature of nature. Whether it's the seasonal scenery of the mixed-gender open-air bath (especially recommended during autumn foliage season) or the highly private kakiri-fubu (private bath room), you can completely unwind and enjoy a pure, healing ritual. 🌳【Nostalgic Japanese Aesthetics and Coexistence with Nature】 Since its opening in 1913, Kinshokan exudes a warm and rustic charm in every design element. It avoids excessive decoration, instead offering a truly authentic Japanese lifestyle aesthetic rooted in the Gunma Mountains through its "natural" approach. A morning or evening stroll along the clear Tanigawa River, watching the flowing water echo the wooden structure of the old inn, is incredibly soothing! 🍽️【Seasonal Culinary Healing】 The food at a hot spring inn always elevates the entire vacation experience. The kaiseki cuisine here also emphasizes "seasonality" and "local," using local ingredients to present creative dishes that allow your taste buds to experience the changing seasons of the Gunma Mountains. Every meal adds a seasonal touch to your journey. 🗺️【In-Depth Vacation Planning Tips】 For a perfect slow-paced vacation, I recommend making a "hot spring bath" the core activity of each day. Start your morning with the hotel's facilities (such as visiting nearby attractions around Tanigawa-dake or taking a stroll within the hotel), and then relax with a spa treatment in the afternoon. Remember to allow enough time to soak in the atmosphere of the "seasonal beauty" flowing beside the bath, rather than rushing to complete your checklist. 💡【For Experience-Focused Travelers】 Kinshokan is perfect for travelers who enjoy in-depth exploration and don't mind the hotel's weathered charm. This isn't a place for perfect filtered photos, but a healing haven designed specifically for "slow living" and "feeling the warmth." #Gunma #TanigawaOnsen #JapaneseRyokan #HotSpringStream #SpaResort #HistoricalAesthetics #In-DepthTravel #Relaxation

"Preparing for Oze sounds like a lot of work..." That was the impression I had, but the boardwalks are actually very well-maintained, making it a breeze even for beginners! ☺️ I've put together a list of things I was really glad we brought, along with a breakdown of how much the trip cost for the two of us. 📝 ✔︎ We bought a bear bell at a nearby 7-Eleven. ✔︎ Body wipes were an absolute lifesaver! ✔︎ The restrooms run on a donation system, so bring plenty of 100-yen coins just to be safe. ✨ The nature in Oze is beautiful, of course, but the beef stew at the Oze Lodge was also incredibly delicious, so you definitely have to try it! 🍴🤎 I hope this helps anyone planning a trip to Oze soon. 🌿 If you have any questions, feel free to drop a comment or send a DM! 😊 Don't forget to save this post so you can check it again before you head out! 📌 Hiking

Atmosphere/Facilities: This is a famous peak representing the Minakami area, and you can easily access high-altitude views using the ropeway. As you ascend from the base, the scale of the mountains that spread out before you is overwhelming. Hiking trails and observation areas are well-maintained, making it an environment where even beginners can enjoy nature without difficulty. On clear days, the contrast between the sky and the mountains is simply beautiful. Recommended Points: ・Easy access to spectacular views via ropeway ・The panoramic view from near the summit is breathtaking and perfect for photos ・Each season has its own distinct charm (fresh greenery, autumn leaves, snowscapes) ・Easy access from Tokyo, making it a highly satisfying day trip Its greatest appeal is that it's a mountain where you can be moved without having to do a full climb. It's the perfect spot for those who want to experience nature but don't want something too strenuous. #solotravel #Tanigawadake #Minakami #ropeway #spectacularviewspot

If you consider yourself a "railway enthusiast" or love mountain adventures, Minakami Town in Gunma Prefecture is definitely worth adding to your To Go list! This trip will take you to three underrated adventure spots: the secluded resort house Tanigawa Hanare, the mysterious underground Doai Station, and the Tenjindaira Ropeway Station with its unbeatable views. The entire trip features both idyllic mountain scenery and incredibly deep underground passages that will make you question your existence, making it perfect for those who love exploration and don't want to follow the beaten path. Attraction Recommendations 1. Tanigawa Hanare 📍Address: 1756 Tsukiyono, Minakami, Tone District, Gunma 379-1313 Located at the foot of Mount Tanigawa, this secluded little house is a hidden gem in Minakami Town. Here, there are no tour groups, only distinct seasons in the mountains and a near-private tranquility. You can enjoy tea in the courtyard outside the house while gazing at the snow-capped mountains, a cool respite even in summer. Surrounded by a variety of tree species, the scenery, changing with the weather, evokes a Japanese rural film feel, perfect for those who enjoy quietly appreciating nature. 2. Doai Station (Japan's Deepest Underground Station) 📍Address: RXJ6+2P, Minakami, Gunma This station is truly mysterious; even many railway enthusiasts may not know it exists. A word of caution: upon arrival, you must descend an extremely long and deep staircase. Passengers carrying luggage or lacking stamina might find themselves wondering if they're living underground. The atmosphere definitely has the feel of an abandoned ruin (but it's actually still in normal use). If you want to capture a niche railway scene or heartwarming moments like children wearing train hats, this station is sure to produce great photos! The changing light and shadow along the stairs and passageways are very interesting, making it a mini-urban adventure. Tip: This station is rarely recommended online/travel information; it's a true hidden gem in Gunma Prefecture. It's best to bring water or energy drinks beforehand, as climbing the stairs is quite a workout! 😆 3. Tenjindaira Chairlift Station 📍Address: Yubiso, Minakami, Tone District, Gunma 379-1728 Opening Hours: 08:00–17:00 year-round (Mon-Fri); 07:00–17:00 (Sat-Sun) If you enjoy a rooftop ride, this cable car station is a must-take! Ascending from the foot of Mount Tanigawa to the sky, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Minakami town's mountains and forests on a clear day; on a cloudy or rainy day, the mist and shadows create a unique, adventurous, fairytale atmosphere. After arriving at the station, you can enjoy various activities such as hiking, children's excursions, and photo shoots. Food service is limited, so it's recommended to bring your own light snacks. Practical Travel Tips: The Minakami area boasts abundant natural scenery but can be damp and chilly at times, so it's advisable to bring rain gear and a warm jacket. If traveling with family or children, a light walking route is recommended; if you plan to climb the stairs at Doai Station, carefully assess your physical condition and pack as lightly as possible. There are limited dining options in the area, so it's best to bring your own lunch or arrange your own. You can try local handmade desserts at a rustic cafe near Tanigawa Hanare. For transportation, you'll generally reach Minakami Town by JR train and bus. Railway enthusiasts should check the Doai timetable, as trains are not very frequent. Deep travel isn't just about checking off tourist spots; it's about discovering those "mysterious travel destinations" that you can only encounter by exploring them on foot. In the mountains of Gunma Prefecture, perhaps your next stop will be a secret memory! #MinakamiTour #MustVisitForRailwayFans #DeepJapanTravel #DakeTanigawa #FamilyNatureTrip

Out of all the highway rest stops we visited during our Japan trip, Akagi Kogen SA (Upbound) truly stood out as one of the best. The area is spacious, clean, and thoughtfully designed, making it more than just a pit stop. What really impressed me was the garden area at the back, which was specially created for dog owners—a thoughtful touch that reflects how well-rest areas are integrated into the Japanese road travel experience. The restrooms were huge and spotless, and the souvenir shop was packed with local goodies, snacks, and regional products. Everything had a modern and welcoming feel to it. We had dinner at the attached food court, which had multiple stalls offering all kinds of Japanese fare. We opted for ramen—it was decent, nothing fancy, but the portion size was massive. Honestly, one bowl could easily feed two people. Kudos to the friendly server for their generosity! Before hitting the road again, we grabbed coffee from a small café tucked in the corner—a lovely surprise with good-quality brews to go. This stop exceeded expectations and made our drive feel that much more enjoyable. #summervacay #AkagiKogenSA #JapanRoadTrip #ServiceAreaGem #JapaneseHighwayStops #CleanRestStops #SouvenirsAndFood #TravelJapan #travel #johorbahru #johorbahrutrip #malaysia #malaysiatrip

Stopped by this ramen stall inside the Akagi Kogen Service Area for a quick meal during our drive. I went for the spicy ramen, which was decent—about what you’d expect from a highway rest stop. Warm, mildly spicy, and comforting enough, though nothing that really stood out. We also ordered the gyoza, but that was a letdown. It came with dipping sauce in a plastic packet, which felt a bit too pre-packaged and took away from the experience. The service station itself is new and modern, with a good variety of food options for its size. Free water was available, which was appreciated. Overall, it’s a convenient place to stop, stretch your legs, grab a quick bite, and continue your journey. If you’re hungry, this ramen will do the job—just don’t expect a gourmet bowl. #summervacay #AkagiKogenSA #RamenPitStop #HighwayEats #SpicyRamen #JapanServiceArea #QuickBite #RestStopReview #japan #japantrip #tohoku #travel #tohokutrip

#skitrip Tanigawadake Tenjindaira is a great destination for those who love deep powder and scenic mountain landscapes. Located in Gunma, it receives heavy snowfall, making it a paradise for off-piste and backcountry enthusiasts. The resort has a few groomed runs for beginners and intermediates, but advanced skiers and snowboarders will appreciate its untouched terrain. The ropeway ride to the top offers breathtaking views, especially in winter. Facilities are minimal, with limited restaurants and rental services, so planning ahead is essential. While not as commercialized as larger resorts, its natural beauty, quiet atmosphere, and excellent snow conditions make it a must-visit.

#skitrip Tanigawadake Tenjindaira is a hidden gem for skiers and snowboarders seeking deep powder and fewer crowds. Located in Gunma Prefecture, it is known for heavy snowfall and breathtaking mountain views. The resort offers a handful of well-groomed runs for beginners and intermediates, but its real appeal is the off-piste terrain, attracting advanced riders. The ropeway ride up the mountain provides stunning scenery, especially in winter. Facilities are basic compared to larger resorts, with limited dining and rental options. However, for those seeking natural snow, a peaceful atmosphere, and backcountry adventures, Tenjindaira is an excellent choice.

#2024 Travel Review **Tsukiyono Onsen** The happiest part of 2024 was going to Gunma! Moon Night Onsen is a hidden hot spring resort with a beautiful environment that allows you to enjoy the beauty of nature while soaking in the hot springs. The hot springs here are of excellent quality, especially for relaxing and allowing you to find a moment of tranquility during your busy travels.

An extraordinary space led by 486 steps! History and the mysteries of nature encountered underground Doai Station is an unmanned station on the JR Joetsu Line located in Minakami-machi, Tone-gun, Gunma Prefecture, and is known as the "number one mole station in Japan" due to its unique structure. 📍Doai Station 🗺️218-2 Yubiso, Minakami-machi, Tone-gun, Gunma Prefecture 🚉JR Joetsu Line local trains stop here, but the number of trains per day is limited, so we recommend checking the timetable in advance. ⭐️Underground platform The platform for the outbound line (towards Niigata) is located in the Shin-Shimizu Tunnel, about 82 meters underground, and it takes about 10 minutes to descend 486 steps from the station building on the ground. Iki Encyclopedia ⭐️Upbound platform On the other hand, the platform for the upbound line (towards Takasaki) is above ground, and you can use it while looking at the surrounding nature. 📕History When the Joetsu Line opened in 1931, Doai Station was established as a single-track above-ground station. Later, with the double-tracking of the line in 1967, a down line was installed in the newly excavated Shin-Shimizu Tunnel, and an underground platform was created. ⭐️Doai Station is a popular spot for railway fans and tourists due to its unique structure. In particular, the long staircase leading to the underground platform is worth seeing, but it is physically demanding, so you need to be well prepared and careful when visiting. ⭐️When planning a visit, we recommend that you prepare the necessary food and drink in advance and allow plenty of time as there are few shops and restaurants in the area. #FritabiWinter #0yenTrip

Introducing the inn "Onoya Hakkeien" located in Sarugakyo Onsen, Gunma Prefecture. Gunma has many hot springs!! Sarugakyo Onsen in the Minakami Onsen area is a hidden gem - ̗̀ ☺︎☺︎☺︎ ̖́-Lake Akaya is right in front of you. To be honest, this clip is a very energetic clip. A day of energy. At first, I didn't think it would be difficult, but when I actually went to play, I knew that this type of sport is really not suitable for me. Not only does it require a lot of physical strength, but it also falls a lot. I can't do it, I can't fight with other people. If I go again, I will probably be a spectator or a photographer or dress up to take pictures. Just taking pictures is awesome. #Sakura2024
