I was tired from cycling around Teshima, so I took a break. I had a cafe at the Seaside Restaurant. This restaurant is located along the coast and has a great view. The pizza is apparently delicious, so they brought it to me fresh from the handmade oven. Yokoo Tadanori also has art works on display in Teshima. I had some time before the return boat from Ieura Port, so I went in. In the previous Yokoo World, he incorporated primary colors into the old houses as much as he could. The most famous tourist spot in Teshima. Teshima Art Museum requires a reservation with a specified time, so please be careful when visiting. Photography is prohibited inside the museum, so I only have photos of the surrounding area, but the entire space is dominated by the masterpieces of modern artists who make use of architecture and water. I was confused at first, but I gradually became at ease and was moved. After that, I saw the famous road that leads to the sea, and ate at a restaurant. I took a ferry to Teshima in Kagawa Prefecture. It took about 40 minutes from Takamatsu Port to reach Ieura Port. It can also be accessed from the opposite shore, Okayama Prefecture. A local told me about it in the morning, so I rented a bicycle and went to Teshima Espoir Park for a morning cafe. It just opened last year. They were serving hot chai until 9am that day, so I bought some right away. It was a bit chilly, so it warmed me up nicely. #DomesticTravel #Gourmet #CoupleTrip

Kagawa Shodoshima International Hotel is located just over the Angel Road. If you plan to go to Shodoshima, it is definitely recommended to stay on the island for a night, soak in the hot springs and look at the sea. You don’t have to catch the boat or the car, and spend a leisurely and comfortable time. 👍🏻 The hotel is surrounded by the sea on three sides, every room has a sea view, and the open-air hot spring naturally faces the sea. You can watch the sunset at night and the sunrise in the morning. The scenery is unbeatable! 🌅It feels great to soak in the hot springs in the gentle sound of the waves and feel the sea breeze at night. 🌌The room is ordinary, but large in size. The hotel dining was excellent! You can take a ferry to access to this one of the most beautiful islands around Kagawa. It is pretty small to explore but feels so good for just relaxing and spending time with great nature. About transportation, unfortunately there are not so many buses however, you can rent a car or even bikes that is enough for exploring all around the island.

I took the 9:00 ferry from Takamatsu (25 min, ¥520), biked the 6km loop (rental ¥500/day, cash at the port) and arrived at 10:05. The museum: a teardrop-shaped shell, two oval openings to the sky, and a floor dotted with small holes where water seeps up, pools, and rolls into bigger droplets. I sat for 40 minutes. No photos inside (strictly enforced — they’ll tap your shoulder). The loop continues: Teshima Yokoo House (¥520, a former home with Yoshitomo Nara works, cards OK), then back past the rice terraces where the Shima Kitchen (¥2,500 set lunch, reservation required via the island info center, cash) serves food grown on-site. Mistake: doing it on a Tuesday (museum closed). Another: bringing a non-folding bike on the ferry — there’s a ¥200 fee and limited space. Rule: no photos inside the museum; no talking loud — the space is designed for listening to water. Opinion: the single-droplet museum is the only art space I’ve been where doing nothing is the entire point. Discussion: when a museum’s only exhibit is a drop of water, is that art or just a very expensive floor?

From Takamatsu Ferry Terminal (~30 min, ~¥620 IC) to Tonosho Port, then olive bus to “Kokusai Hotel (Angel Road Mae)” (~10–20 min, ~¥300 IC/cash). The trick: check Tonosho Town’s annual tide PDF, aim to arrive 30–60 min before low-tide peak—narrower sandbar, better “road on the sea” frame, and you beat the couple-photo crush. I went a May weekday with low tide at 17:05: Takamatsu → Tonosho ferry 15:10, olive bus 16:05, stood at the shore 16:25 as the wet sand widened. Walked to Nakayakajima at 16:50, rang the lovers’ bell (free), back by 17:25 as the water reclaimed the center. A 200-yen lover’s soft-serve (cash) from the beach kiosk, a 130-yen vending tea (IC). Round-trip fare ¥2,340 (Mar–Oct), ¥2,160 in winter, one-way ¥1,300; card at the booth. The 5-minute ride lifts you to 612 m, where volcanic pillars drop 50 m into a maple-and-oak gorge. After June rain the summit trail boards are edged with moss 2 cm thick. I hiked the 40-min loop from the top station to Shishiiwa (Lion Rock) and back—easy grade, but the moss on the north-facing rocks is slick; poles help. The view over the Seto Inland Sea is the payoff: 20 islands, no railings, just wind. Mistake: I rode up at 11 am in August—haze killed the horizon. Go at 8:30 opening or 15:30 late light. Karato itself is three houses, a shrine, and a mossy stone quay where the 18:00 ferry to Shodoshima used to stop (now seasonal). I wore trail shoes—the village path is concrete then dirt then moss slab. No shops, no toilets; carry 1 L water. Best light: 16:00–17:30, when the terrace paddies reflect the cloud. Mistake: I came on a Tuesday—the one tea house (Shima Kitchen) was closed. Teshima’s rural side shuts midweek; go Thu–Sun or pack lunch. I did it as a 4-hour appendage to Naoshima—ferry 09:20, back 15:47. The island has 50 residents, one café (cash only, ¥500 curry), no ATM. Mistake: I didn't bring cash—stranded at the café with no way to pay the ¥200 water. Carry ¥5,000 in ¥1,000s for the islands.
