St. Gatien Cathedral in Tours is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in Tours, Indre-et-Loire. Built for the first bishop of Tours, St. Gatien, it is home to the Tupel Diocese and the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Tull Parish. It was listed as a historical monument in 1862. This Gothic building is a landmark of Tours and is very grand, and its size is somewhat disproportionate to today's Tours. Although St. Gatien Cathedral is a very beautiful building, unfortunately it is not one of the main Gothic churches in France. One of the highlights of the church interior is the world-famously beautifully painted rose window, which dates back to the 13th century. Its towering spires, grand nave, and the abundance of stained glass windows reminiscent of Paris's Sainte-Chapelle bathe the interior in light. In fact, visiting Tours Cathedral first might make Sainte-Chapelle seem less impressive! 💡 What is the Battle of Tours-Poitiers? In 732, Charles Martel, the Mayor of the Palace of the Frankish Kingdom, led his forces to repel the advancing Islamic army of the Umayyad Caliphate from the Iberian Peninsula. This victory halted the expansion of Islamic influence into Western Europe and is often regarded as a decisive battle that safeguarded the Christian world.
