2024 Toyako Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in November)
Toyako Lake is located in the southwestern part of Hokkaido and belongs to the Tozan National Park. The volcano erupted frequently in the early 20th century and formed the lake after it was trapped. Because Donghu Lake is relatively wide, the outer mountain is relatively low from the lake, only 200 to 500 meters, so it gives a very broad feeling. Near the lakeshore is the Showa Shinzan, a new terrain that was raised in the fault caused by the earthquake in 1943, and still emits white smoke. There is the famous Toyako Onsen on the caldera lake, which is one of the few hot spring resorts in Hokkaido.

Onsen with a Breathtaking View of Lake Tōya
Lake Toya is a must-visit destination in Hokkaido during winter. It not only boasts a magnificent scenery but also features one of the world`s most unique natural occurrences - its lake never freezes during winter. This is due to the stratovolcano, Mount Usu, around the lake. Very interesting isn't it?
There are many things to do in Lake Toya, and the best decision we made was to go for Onsen. We have Onsen in Singapore but it's an entirely different experience to do it in winter. When temperature dips to sub zero, the cold never truly leaves you, regardless of the number of layers you wear. Onsen becomes a source of warmth, comfort and relief. We felt so so blessed then, the feeling was indescribable.
Things to note: There are public and private Onsen. Strict rules must be followed at the public hot spring baths - tattoos, photography and the use of bath towels are prohibited. For private ones, there are no restrictions. We stayed at Toyako Manseikaku. It has the perfect view of the lake and a public Onsen. We also made frequent trips to their in-house café as the views from there are exceptional! Starting from SGD$200 per night, guests can enjoy their Onsen for free and complimentary buffet breakfast for two. If you prefer privacy, you can also book a private spa at Nonokaze Resort for just SGD$33 per 50 minutes.

Getting there - There is a hotel shuttle bus that operates to and from JR Sapporo and New Chitose Airport. It is free from JR Sapporo Station and costs 1000 yen one way from New Chitose Airport. Need to book in advance.

Strolling along Lake Toya
#celebratewithtrip
Lake Toya was born more than 110,000 years ago following a huge volcanic eruption. We took our time for a relaxing long stroll along the lake. There are a lot of very nice modern sculptures along the way.
Lake Toya (洞爺湖) is one of the best hot spring towns in Japan for budget travelers. The combination of many free hot spring facilities, cheap bus routes and some super cheap accommodation makes the place stand out from the others.

We randomly stopped by this gelato shop when we drove on the way back to Lake Toya. The gelato is super nice.
I recommend this place if you have a chance to visit Hokkaido area especially Toya to enjoy the amazing beautiful scenery while eat some tasty Gelato Ice Cream. There are many kinds of various flavors Ice cream. So you can choose it whatever flavors what you wanted. In the season you can view many different Hokkaido flowers.

One of the best ONSEN hotels near Lake Toya!
There is free shuttle bus service from Sapporo station to the hotel! The view from the rooms is just impeccable, breathtaking! They have indoor and outdoor ONSEN baths. They have so many different baths and they’re incredible. The beds are also very comfortable and the rooms are nice and clean. It’s really fun to experience soaking in ONSEN bath whilst it was snowing. I really love this stay! #onsenhotel
Around Lake Toya - flat view from lakeside .
Easy to navigate around. every few hundreds meter you will find some interesting spot for pictures
Showa Shinzhan Bear ranch is a place to view many big brown bears.
There are vending machines around the park where one can purchase to feed the bears. Not the friendliest animal that you can pat or touch, you will be able to watch their daily activity from top down view.
I guess now the bears are more protected that letting them roaming outside .
worth visiting if you are going to the Mount Usu next to it via Usuzan Ropeway as side trip.#bucketlistreboot
Stunning views from Lake Toya Nonokaze
Lake Toya is argubly the most scenic spa resort in Hokkaido. With its paranomic views of the scenic Lake Toya from the upscale hotel resort, its well worth splurging for a magical night here just to have a wonderful experience in Lake Toya, Japan.
There are both Japanese and Western style rooms available at the resort and we chose the Western style room which comes with a king bed. If you choose the Japanese style, it comes with a futon bed.
We booked a free shuttle from JR Sapporo Station to get to the hotel and it was relatively fuss free to get there.
The hotel restaurant has wonderful views of Lake Toya as well while you dine from the restaurant, which is very relaxing.

Stepping into Lake Toya, you are greeted by the tranquil and clear waters, like a giant flawless mirror reflecting the surrounding green mountains and the blue sky. The lake's surface ripples gently with the breeze, like a soft whisper of nature, making you let go of mundane thoughts and immerse in this serene environment. In the distance, Mount Yotei rises majestically into the clouds, imposing and magnificent, facing the lake and forming a stunning natural painting.
Walking along the lake, you occasionally see small boats drifting leisurely, breaking the surface of the water without disturbing the peace, adding a touch of poetry. The cool breeze brings the refreshing scent of the lake, invigorating your senses, and the birds' songs seem to welcome every traveler. As the sun sets, the lake is tinged with a soft orange-red hue, and the mountain shadows change with the light, creating a dreamy scene that makes it hard to leave. Lake that never freezes - Lake Tōya
#japantrip
#cityscape #traveldiaries
#travelchecklist #100waysoftravel #travellerswonderland #outdooradventures
Lake Tōya (洞爺湖, Tōya-ko) is a volcanic caldera lake in Shikotsu-Toya National Park, Abuta District, Hokkaidō, Japan.
Lake Tōya is said to be the northernmost lake in Japan that never ices (with competing claim by nearby Lake Shikotsu), and the second most transparent lake in Japan.
Known for its pristine waters and stunning surroundings, Lake Tōya offers a unique experience for travelers seeking natural wonders and cultural richness. Experience the serene beauty of Lake Tōya in Hokkaido, Japan, where mornings are filled with breathtaking views and outdoor adventures.
Fun fact: it never freezes in winter thanks to the geothermal activity of the region!
Don’t forget to indulge in the onsen most of the hotel offers!
The Nonokaze Resort and Onsen
It was a wonderful experience at Lake Toya.
We checked in The Nonokaze Onsen Resort. The lobby was amazingly nice, while welcome drink was served. When we got our room key on the 7th floor, we were greeted by the picturesque view of lake toya. The full length windows tell it all. Next was the buffet dinner at the spacious and heightened restaurant, we were spoilt with food choices and simply love it. After the lovely dinner, we took a walk at the illumination.
Lake Hill Farm
#traveldiaries
Address: 127 Hanawa, Toyako, Abuta District, Hokkaido 049-5724, Japan
Lake Hill Farm is a beautiful farm and cafe with a big grassland, where we noticed a group of visitors playing badminton 🏸. There are others simply relaxing or taking photos around the farm. There is also a goat roaming around and eating at the grassland.
You can also relax at the cafe or the outdoor benches and order drinks and/or gelato from the kiosk. Overall, it's a nice resting space on the way to Lake Toya.
Lake Toya C position, sightseeing hotel
In the center of Lake Toya Onsen Street, it is a few minutes' walk to the boat pier, watching fireworks at night, and to the bus center.
The hotel is old but affordable, with a very high cost-performance ratio. The dinner portion is not large, but just right, not too filling. The rice is especially good. The breakfast buffet has everything you need, especially the steamed potatoes from Hokkaido 🥔, which are of high quality, delicate in texture, super sweet, and something I've never tasted before. Everyone should try it.
The hot spring ♨️ water is a sodium chloride spring, slightly cloudy. Only the water section is heated, no other additives. I had an injury on my foot, and it hurt slightly when soaked in the water, indicating that the water contains chlorine.
The nearby Nakanowind is very high-end, so it's up to you to choose between luxury and economy.

Toyako Lake Memorial Hall
Toyako Lake Tourist Information Center is right next to the bus stop. I went inside for a visit and it felt like a memorial hall. The first floor displays the living environment and pictures of Hokkaido residents. The second floor is divided into two exhibition areas. One area showcases the long table used during the G8 summit held in Hokkaido, the resting places for the leaders, and the flags of the participating countries. The other area mainly introduces pictures of Hokkaido's mineral resources. By taking your time to look around, you can get a general understanding of Hokkaido!
Ranking of Hokkaido attractions in September
After arriving in Hokkaido, I chose a one-day tour of Hokkaido with Ctrip, participating in the Lake Toya route and the Furano route, while I went to Otaru by myself.
Advantages: No need to research complex routes for the one-day tour, and it is quite cost-effective.
Recommended ranking:
Otaru Aquarium, Shukutsu Observatory, Otaru Canal
Boating on Lake Toya
Lake Toya Observatory
Lake Shikotsu, Cape Chikyu
Noboribetsu Hell Valley, not recommended in summer, quite boring
Biei's flower fields in late August are already desolate, and the area is super small, not much to see
Blue Pond, a spot where you just take a photo and it's over, not worth a special trip
Shirahige Falls, same situation as above
Farm Tomita in Furano, although the flowers have withered, the overall layout is exquisite, and the lavender-related items in the shops are also interesting. Overall, it is more decent than Biei.
Summary: On a good weather day, you can see Shakotan Blue at Otaru Aquarium, no need to spend a long time going to Cape Kamui
Regretfully, I couldn't go to the Blue Cave due to strong waves
Next time I come to Hokkaido in summer, I will stay in Otaru for one night. The one-day tour was too rushed, and the shops on the commercial street closed at 6 PM. I didn't get to visit the music box shop or Kitaichi Glass, which is a pity.
Food: Went to Nemuro Hana, super cost-effective
Went to Tokusho, highly recommended, excellent quality, low price
Also had yakitori, couldn't get into Nemuro Hana on the first day, so I randomly found a place on the street, and every skewer was delicious
Sapporo beer is so good, the foam is like cream, and it doesn't have the bitterness of domestic beer. I had a big glass with every meal. Compared to Otaru whiskey, I prefer it more.
Otaru Sankaku Market stops taking orders at 4:30 PM. I randomly found a place on the street and had a seafood bowl, which was also good. No need to specifically check in at a particular place!!
Amazing view at Lake Toya
In the morning , just right beside the room of Hotel Cxxxx . You can enjoy your own moment with Lake Toya. Wish to come again next winter, and wish to stay longer even though the location is far but the view worth everything.
Escape to Paradise at Yutorelo Toyako
🏞️ Dreaming of a perfect getaway that combines luxury, adventure, and breathtaking nature? Yutorelo Toyako at Lake Toya in Hokkaido is the place to be!
🌊 Situated on the tranquil shores of Lake Toya, Yutorelo Toyako is a haven for both relaxation and adventure seekers.
Upon arrival, enjoy welcome drinks and snacks, and experience a smooth check-in. Then, unwind in their warm, mineral-rich onsen waters - a perfect way to rejuvenate your soul! 🌿♨️
🍽️ Treat your taste buds to an amazing culinary journey with a dinner that showcases the true flavors of Hokkaido's rich food heritage. 🍣
🎇 After dinner, take a leisurely stroll and enjoy a fireworks show over the lake. The fireworks, launched from boats on the lake, light up the entire hot spring street and are a spectacular sight!
P.S. Make sure to check if there are fireworks during your travel period.

Whether you're gazing out at the Pacific's Uchiura Bay or the tranquil Lake Toya, every room promises a postcard-perfect panorama. But it's not just about the views - from the private ski slopes to the Michelin-starred dining, there's an air of exclusivity that makes every stay special.
🍽️ Indulge in exquisite French cuisine, traditional Japanese dishes, or sizzling teppanyaki with a side of stunning lake vistas. While the onsen may not be the main attraction, especially in the chilly winter months, the spa services and world-class amenities more than make up for it.

Lake Toya's Majestic Beauty
#japantrip
My visit to Lake Toya in Hokkaido, Japan, was a truly unforgettable experience. The lake's crystal-clear waters and stunning scenery left me in awe. I took a leisurely boat ride across the lake, marveling at the surrounding mountains and lush forests. The peaceful atmosphere and tranquil surroundings made me feel at one with nature. I also enjoyed hiking around the lake's perimeter, taking in the breathtaking views from various vantage points. Lake Toya's natural beauty is a must-see for anyone visiting Hokkaido. Its serenity and majesty will leave you feeling refreshed and inspired.
Lake toya
#japantrip Pit stop along the way to sapporo during winter in feb. The lake is so vast and amazing with a small island in the center. This lake doesnt freeze over during winter. There is a rope way to the top and a free visitor center of sorts to view the history of this area. In the town there is also a bear zoo to view the bears. Overall a good stop over for photos and a lunch break.
