They might look like train tracks leading to another dimension, but they are actually active rails used to launch sightseeing boats into the water and haul them back to land before winter sets in. What started as practical equipment born out of Hokkaido's harsh winters has now become a mysterious and breathtaking sight that captivates many. Here are three underwater railways I stumbled upon in Hokkaido. 📍Lake Shikaribetsu (Shikaoi Town) You'll find this underwater railway near Hakuun Bridge (Mt. Hakuun Trailhead). As the highest natural lake in Hokkaido (approx. 810m), its water clarity is top-tier. On a sunny day, the water is so crystal clear you can see all the way to the bottom, offering a surreal view of the tracks extending straight into the depths. 📍Lake Akan (Kushiro City) This railway is just a short walk from the lake shore where you'll see the "Lake Akan" sign featured in the photo. With majestic Mt. Oakan towering in the background, the tracks disappearing into the lake create a spectacular view unique to Lake Akan. On perfectly still days, the lake turns into a mirror, making the scenery even more magical. 📍Lake Toya (Toyako Town) This underwater railway is located on the shoreline near the Lake Toya Steamboat Pier. As one of Japan's premier caldera lakes, it also boasts stunning views of Nakajima Island in the center, Mt. Usu, and Showa Shinzan. The rails quietly slipping into the calm waters make for a soothing spot where time seems to slow down. Believe it or not, these three underwater railways aren't abandoned ruins—they are very much in use today. Behind these surreal landscapes lies the wisdom of locals who have learned to live in harmony with Hokkaido's rugged nature. For crystal-clear waters, go to Lake Shikaribetsu. For epic, majestic views, head to Lake Akan. For a laid-back, soothing vibe, Lake Toya is your spot. Though they share the same concept, each underwater railway has its own distinct charm. Word has it there's another one at Lake Shikotsu. I tried looking for it, but couldn't track it down this time. Next time, I'm determined to find it and complete my tour of Hokkaido's hidden underwater railways. Hokkaido is still full of undiscovered breathtaking views. For this trip, we stayed in a Japanese-style lake view room at Toya Kohantei. You can take in the stunning scenery of Lake Toya right from your room. The staff even comes in to lay out the traditional futons, giving you that authentic Japanese ryokan (hot spring inn) vibe. The hotel provides yukatas for guests. Adult sizes are ready in the room, while kids' sizes can be picked up at the lobby. Some of the toiletries and amenities are also stationed in the lobby for you to grab as needed. We went with the half-board package, which means both breakfast and dinner were buffets. The food selection was quite impressive, featuring freshly fried tempura, DIY seafood bowls, soba noodles, salads, various hot dishes, miso soup, cakes, and fresh fruit. You could even make your own Japanese shaved ice, and there were plenty of beverage options. The only downside was that we stayed for three consecutive nights, and the menu barely changed. This wouldn't be an issue if you're only staying for a night or two. The front desk is staffed with both Japanese and international employees. Communicating in basic English was no problem at all, making check-in and getting answers to our questions a breeze. There's a free parking lot right across from the hotel, which is super convenient for road-trippers. At 8:00 PM, the hotel hosts a Bingo night. The atmosphere gets really lively, and cards are just 500 yen each for anyone who wants to join in the fun. The hotel features gender-segregated grand public baths, complete with both indoor and open-air hot springs. It's incredibly relaxing to just soak and unwind—absolutely heavenly. If you visit during the summer, you'll also get to see the Lake Toya fireworks. Since Kohantei is situated a bit further down the shoreline and the fireworks are launched from a moving boat, they're usually nearing the finale by the time the boat reaches the front of the hotel. If you don't mind that, you can still catch a great view standing right outside. However, if you want to experience the full show, I highly recommend buying a ticket for the fireworks viewing boat to see them up close—it’s totally worth it. Overall, Toya Kohantei is a fantastic choice for travelers looking to experience a traditional Japanese hot spring inn, enjoy the convenience of a road trip, and soak in beautiful lake views and hot springs. I’d highly recommend it for a one- or two-night stay!

Staying at the Nonokaze Resort at Lake Toya this time was an absolute treat! There's a dedicated shuttle from the parking lot to the hotel, complete with drinks. As soon as you step into the lobby, you're greeted with welcome drinks and snacks. In the evening, you can enjoy the free Lake Toya fireworks display. The dinner buffet is premium, featuring all-you-can-eat Hanasaki crab and steak. Watching the fireworks after dinner, and taking a dip in the rooftop open-air hot spring before bed was just incredibly relaxing. I'd definitely love to book another stay here next time!

When visiting Lake Toya, the thing I look forward to the most is seeing the breathtaking beauty of the "Eight Views of Lake Toya" with my own eyes! During the day, the mountains and landscapes reflect beautifully on the calm water, creating a serene vibe amidst the swirling mist. But the absolute highlight is the nighttime fireworks over the lake. Watching the spectacular fireworks light up the night sky and reflect on the water is truly mind-blowing! The chicken leg was massive and braised to fall-off-the-bone perfection—you barely had to pull, and it was packed with flavor. The curry broth wasn't overly thick; it had lovely layers of spices with a mild kick that really whet the appetite. The side veggies were the real showstopper: the broccoli was lightly fried with a slightly crispy exterior that soaked up the curry sauce beautifully. Other sides included pumpkin, potatoes, eggplant, green bell peppers, and mushrooms, all cooked flawlessly. It was served with a generous portion of butter rice. Taking toll roads can be very expensive in Hokkaido and thus, if you choose to take many toll roads during your trip, it would more cost effective if you buy the HEP Hokkaido Expressway Pass instead. We drove here this time, and upon arrival, the staff gave us a sign and directed us to park for free at a nearby parking lot, which is very close. After parking, there's a shuttle that takes us back to the hotel, and the ride takes less than 5 minutes. During check-in, the staff proactively served welcome snacks and drinks, which was incredibly thoughtful! We booked the Lake View TOYA Nonokaze - Standard Room, specifically on a high floor. Two nights with one meal for two people cost only ¥36,185, which is roughly HKD 1,900. It's an absolute steal, averaging less than HKD 1,000 per person! I took a 9-day, 8-night road trip with my besties this time, and we booked this resort specifically for the nightly fireworks, thinking it would be the perfect way to treat ourselves after all our hard work! I really have to rave about how great this hotel is. Right from the parking shuttle, the driver offered us drinks. When we arrived at the hotel, there was afternoon tea and snacks waiting for us. The staff was also incredibly thorough and attentive when introducing the hotel facilities and dinner services. I highly recommend booking the breakfast + dinner package. The floor-to-ceiling windows are absolutely gorgeous. The only downside is that it gets quite hot by the windows during the day in the summer—so hot that we couldn't stop chugging iced drinks... They provide super cute yukatas that you can wear out and about. The evening fireworks aren't massive, but they're still beautiful, and it's so nice seeing all the other guests dressed up in their cute yukatas too. There's also a souvenir shop on the first floor of the lobby. If you enjoy a little nightcap, you can buy a bucket of ice to take back to your room and just chill out.

The lake side offers a full view of Lake Toya, While the ocean side overlooks Uchiura Bay. Getting there is a bit inconvenient, though. It's about a 30-minute drive from JR Toya Station. I recommend booking the hotel's free shuttle in advance, Which can be done via phone or email. A driver will be waiting with a name sign at the JR station exit. The last shuttle departs at 7:00 PM. Once at the hotel, you can book return shuttles at the front desk (at least an hour prior). The hotel has a small private ski resort, but the opening dates vary each year. This year, it's only open until March 23rd, Featuring just two beginner slopes, each 500 meters long. There are also hot springs and open-air baths (rotenburo) on-site. The pools are relatively small, And the open-air baths alternate daily between men and women. The Windsor Hotel Toya recently joined the IHG Group. This time, I stayed using my IHG Diamond status. By combining a reward night booking, a suite upgrade award, and a points promotion, The actual cost came out to about $130 USD per night, including breakfast. It's an incredibly great deal. Lake Toya is a famous volcanic lake in Japan 🌋 It's also renowned as one of the 100 Landscapes of Japan. On my road trip heading north from southern Hokkaido, I decided to make a pit stop and spend a 2-day, 1-night stay at Lake Toya. My main goal was to catch a glimpse of Mount Yotei and the fireworks festival 🎇 However, the weather didn't cooperate that day and the clouds were super thick, so I could only take in the views of Lake Toya itself. Even though the rain hid Mount Yotei from view, the misty vibes rolling over the lake had their own unique charm. Honestly, the rain just added an extra touch of tranquility to Lake Toya. Taking a stroll along the lakeshore was incredibly relaxing. You'd occasionally spot people out for a jog. Along the way, I stumbled upon a footbath called "Toryu no Yu" ♨️ The water was pretty hot, making for a super comforting soak. Afterwards, I wandered back down the shopping street. Once I freshened up a bit, I headed out to see the Toya fireworks. Maybe my expectations were just a bit too high, but after watching it, I felt the fireworks in Tamsui were way better 🤣 Both dinner and breakfast were included in my stay. The meals were pretty decent. The hotel also features men's and women's bathhouses upstairs. One side even has an open-air bath overlooking Lake Toya. For itinerary planning, I highly recommend a 2-day, 1-night stay here. Ideally, you should try to arrive first thing in the morning. Because there are so many nearby spots I wanted to visit but ran out of time, like the Mt. Usu Ropeway, Shinzan Bear Park, the observation deck, and Nakajima Island. If you're willing to venture further, you could totally pair this up with a trip to Noboribetsu. It's definitely a fantastic, family-friendly destination suitable for kids and older folks alike. This was my second visit to Sapporo, and I tried a different place last time, but they were all great 😊) -> Convenience store shopping and crashing 🛌. DAY3️⃣ Accommodation -> Baristart Coffee (A latte specialty shop❕ Sapporo is famous for its dairy industry, and you can enjoy creamy lattes made with delicious milk and coffee beans ♥) -> Minami Otaru -> Otaru (These areas are connected, allowing you to explore music box shops, Otaru Canal, LeTAO, glass workshops, and accessory shops 😊 / Perfect for a day trip ❗️) -> Jingisukan Main Store (There are many branches in Sapporo, so visit the one closest to your route! However, the branches are small, so there might be a wait 🥹) -> Convenience store shopping and enjoying the last night 🌙. DAY4️⃣ Check-out from accommodation -> Airport (To reduce the luggage I carried, I shopped at the duty-free store. Duty-free items are pricier, so if your suitcase has space, I recommend shopping in the city! For heavier items, just buy them at the duty-free store ★).
