Porta Nigra
Ancient Roman City of Trier, Germany
Trier, which is in southwest Germany and close to Luxembourg, is the oldest city in Germany and was an important administrative center for the Western Roman Empire.
The city is very walkable, and I was able to get everywhere on foot with the help of Google Maps. A full, packed day is enough to cover the major sites and take in the many fascinating ancient Roman ruins. I managed to tour the Porta Nigra, which was a city gate and later a church, the Trier Imperial Baths, Trier Amphitheater (used for gladiator events in Roman times), Trier Cathedral, and the Electoral Palace.
Trier is a must-visit for European history buffs and UNESCO World Heritage site lovers!

trier the oldest city in germany
My trip to Trier, Germany, was a journey through time, exploring some of the best-preserved Roman history in the country. Known as the oldest city in Germany, Trier is packed with ancient ruins, medieval charm, and a lively cultural scene.
One of the main highlights was the Porta Nigra, a massive Roman gate that has stood for nearly 2,000 years. Walking through its towering arches, I could feel the weight of history and imagine what life might have been like in Roman times. The views from the top of the gate offered a stunning panorama of Trier and its surrounding hills, making it a perfect spot to start my exploration.
Trier’s Roman heritage is evident throughout the city, from the amphitheater, which once hosted gladiator battles, to the ruins of the Imperial Baths. The amphitheater, with its stone seating and underground passages, was fascinating to explore. I learned that it was once a hub of entertainment for Roman spectators, and standing there gave me a sense of the city’s ancient energy. The Imperial Baths, with their extensive underground tunnels and towering walls, provided further insight into Roman life and their impressive engineering skills.
In addition to its Roman relics, Trier also boasts stunning medieval architecture. The Trier Cathedral, a mix of Romanesque and Gothic styles, is awe-inspiring both inside and out. Its intricate details and vibrant stained glass were breathtaking, and the church’s quiet atmosphere made it a peaceful escape from the bustling city.
Exploring Trier’s quaint streets, filled with cafes and local shops, added a cozy touch to the trip. Overall, Trier offers a rich blend of ancient history, architectural beauty, and vibrant local culture. It was incredible to experience so much history in a city that feels both timeless and alive with character.
Spacious & Cozy Setting at FourSide Plaza

Trier is the oldest city in Germany, plenty of historical sites you could visit. The location which is close to Luxembourg make it an interesting and strategic place for you to stay as it is overall cheaper than staying in Luxembourg itself.
If you decided to stay in Trier, do consider this place for your stay. It is about 15 to 20 minutes walk to the city center. The room itself so spacious and even has it own hallway.
Bed and mattress is so soft and smelling fresh all the time. You could rent their parking spot, which I paid 9€ for two nights.
The only downside for me was that it was not equipped with air conditioning that it can get warm in the evening. I did not ask for fan from the staff but that could be something you might wanna ask for.

Trier is the oldest city of Germany, despite having plenty of modern buildings, many historical landmarks still well preserved and become an attraction around Trier that any visitors should visit. Below are few that you should consider to visit;
2nd - 4th picture; Trier Amphitheater
It is an old arena used during Roman Empire. It might look like nothing when you just standing on the surface but there is also underground area and tunnels that bring you around the arena. It is very tourist friendly as brochures and information board are available in few languages including english.
5th - 7th picture; Liebfrauenkirche, Trier
A grand catholic church in the center of the city. No entrance fee is required but feel free to give donation for maintenance of the place. It is a big area where an underground is also available for visitors. According to UNESCO, it is the earliest church built in French High Gothic style outside of France.
8th & 9th; Porta Nigra
Also known as Black Gate, a little bit outside of the city but it only took few minutes walk to arrive here. It is also listed on UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List.
10th & 11th; Carl Marx Statue
Trier is home to Carl Marx, a famous philosopher in the 19th century.
Black Gate in The Oldest City of Germany
#citydaytours #vianasjourney #awesomepic
Porta Nigra or also known as Black Gate is located in the city of Trier, the oldest city in Germany. While visiting, keep in mind that entrance will be close 30 minutes before closing time which is 6pm. Entrance fee is cheap which only cost at 4€ per person but if I may be honest, there is nothing much to see in the building itself. I feel like it actually just enough to just admire the architecture from outside itself. But if you decided to go inside, keep in mind that spiral staircase will bring you to the top where you can enjoy the view but it is not wheelchair friendly.

The Cathedral of Trier, originally built in Roman times, is the oldest bishop church in Germany. Because of the war, the church has been damaged many times, and has undergone many reconstructions. It is also a spectacle to enjoy a variety of styles such as Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque in a church. The most precious relic in the church is the Holy Robe, which is said to be the coat of Jesus Christ. Every morning, the sun shines through the stained glass into the church, forming a colorful beam of light, sacred. (Photos by SONY 7M3)
Trier has a history of more than two thousand years, and the Roman emperors Octavian and Constantine have left their mark here. It is considered to be the oldest city in Germany and the most relic of the ancient Roman era in Germany and is listed as a World Heritage Site. Of course, what makes the city most famous is that it is the hometown of Karl Marx.

The trendy bar in the medieval walls, the Picasso Museum in the ancient aristocratic courtyard, and the baroque architectural treasures stand beside the masterpieces of modern architectural design. It is this fascinating combination that embodies the charm of Trier: the coexistence of a long history and an international atmosphere.
Trier belongs to the German Historical City and its origins are reflected in its main market: the gable of the merchant building forms an elegant silhouette, and under its arcade, the exquisite shops invite you to hang out. Under the close proximity of the cathedral, one can stroll through one of Europe's most beautiful weekly markets.
Here, you can find "green islands" everywhere. In the boulevard, in the palace garden, you can find the "green island" in A Lake. Then, in the many local pubs, whether it is a comfortable traditional bar or an elegant pub in the Port Creative Marina, take a break and enjoy the variety of wines they offer. Then, consider preparing to visit more than 30 museums. Which ones.
