One of the highlights of my visit was the famous Santuario di Santa Maria dell’Isola, a stunning monastery perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the sea. Climbing up to the sanctuary rewarded me with panoramic views of the coastline, where the deep blues of the Tyrrhenian Sea stretched endlessly under the golden sun. The sight was mesmerizing, a reminder of nature’s artistry combined with human history. Of course, no visit to Tropea would be complete without experiencing its legendary beaches. I made my way down to Spiaggia di Tropea, where soft white sands met crystal-clear waters in shades of turquoise and sapphire. The warm Mediterranean sun, the gentle sound of waves, and the refreshing sea breeze created the perfect setting to unwind. Swimming in these pristine waters felt almost surreal, like floating in a natural paradise. Beyond the landscapes, Tropea’s culinary scene was another unforgettable part of the experience. I indulged in local specialties like ’Nduja, a spicy spreadable sausage unique to Calabria, and the region’s famous red onions, which added a sweet and rich flavor to many dishes. But the real treat was the gelato, best enjoyed while strolling through the lively streets as the evening lights cast a golden glow over the town. With each bite of the creamy, flavorful gelato—especially the local favorite, cipolla rossa (red onion) gelato, surprisingly sweet and delicious—I felt more connected to the essence of Tropea’s unique traditions. As the sun began to set, I found a spot along the Belvedere Piazza Cannone, a scenic overlook that offered a postcard-perfect view of the sea and the silhouette of Santa Maria dell’Isola against the fiery sky. The atmosphere was magical—locals and visitors alike gathered to take in the breathtaking sight, chatting softly as the sky transitioned from orange to deep purple. It was the kind of moment that made me want to pause time, to soak in the beauty of this coastal paradise just a little longer. During the week-long exploration of Calabria. I stopped by Tropea for two nights. I was surprised that i didn't run into many or even foreign travellers during those two days. Well naturally sometimes you can't tell unless you've spoken. But with Tropea, the Italian tourists know its value. It seems on a foreign travellers itinerary it rarely receives a mention. So anywho i hung out with some locals and picked up hints on when people recommended what to do. In terms of first impressions, you have a lovely city set atop a cliff, the weather was bright and sunny, sandy beaches to lay on and turquoise blue water. Compared to my time in Amalfi, the beaches here felt more spacious and it had the elements of an Italian holiday. Not to forget, the prices were amongst the best i found in seaside towns. Actually quite good. Amongst my favourite experiences were the old town. As always i walked all around it. I have to say though that it's too many stairs as you navigate from the old town to the beach and then the beach to elsewhere. One of the interesting tours i went on was that of an onion farm. It seems the red onions of Tropea are really famous. So that was interesting. You'll find plenty more ways to spend your time here i mean the beach too can eat up most of your day. Then there is even food and night life. And yes if I may recommend, do try the boat trip to capo vaticano. Tropea is a seaside resort with sandy beaches, located on the Gulf of Saint Euphemia, part of the Tyrrhenian Sea, on Italy's west coast and was named “Most beautiful village in Italy” for 2021.

The Sanctuary of Santa Maria on the Cliff is located in the Gulf of Sant'Eufemia on the Tyrrhenian Sea. It belongs to Tropea in the Vibo Valentia Province of the Calabria region in southern Italy and was named the "Most Beautiful Village in Italy" in 2021. According to historians, the first human settlements were made around the 7th or 8th century, believed to be Greek hermits and monks who isolated themselves from the civilized world and devoted themselves to a life of meditation and abstinence. And since the first written accounts of the use of the rock for monastic purposes date back to the 11th century, everything before that must be considered as probable history. In fact, Tropea, like all of Calabria, was then under the jurisdiction of the Byzantine and Greek rite churches until the arrival of the Latinizing Normans in 1040. Around 1066, the land around the Sanctuary of Santa Maria was divided among ten families for cultivation by the Normans and donated to Bishop Disdrio of the Abbey of Montecassino by Robert Guiscard, a Norman cousin of Pope Victor. Over the centuries, due to strong earthquakes and various attacks it may have experienced, the temple complex has been repaired and renovated many times, and the original structure is long gone. Only inside the church do some typical architectural elements still remain, which were the destinations of pilgrims passing through during the period on their pilgrimage to the Virgin. Following earthquakes in 1783 and 1905, little remains of the original structure. The current staircase reaching the rock was built around 1810. The last renovation dates back to 1908, after the 1905 earthquake destroyed part of the portico.
