Ushuaia travel guide and discussion

· Days 1-3: Buenos Aires: Upon arrival, begin your city tour to explore the "Paris of South America." Highlights include the vibrant tin houses and street tango of La Boca, Plaza de Mayo and the Casa Rosada, Recoleta Cemetery (the final resting place of Eva Perón), and El Ateneo Grand Splendid, renowned as one of the world's most beautiful bookstores. · Day 4: Fly to El Calafate: A direct 3-hour flight from Buenos Aires takes you to this charming Patagonian town nestled between mountains and lakes. Savor local delicacies such as Patagonian roast lamb or southern king crab. · Day 5: Los Glaciares National Park: A full-day excursion. A 1.5-hour drive from El Calafate brings you to the park, where the star attraction is the Perito Moreno Glacier. You can explore the scenic walkways or take a boat tour to witness the awe-inspiring sight of ice calving up close. · Days 6-7: Glacier Trekking or Local Exploration: Book a guided trek on the glacier wearing crampons, or join a full-day boat cruise across Lake Argentino to view the Upsala Glacier and others. Alternatively, head to El Chaltén, a premier paradise for hiking enthusiasts. · Days 8-10: Return to Buenos Aires: Fly back to the capital for leisure time and shopping before your departure, or continue your journey to Ushuaia to explore the "End of the World." 📝 Destination Highlights · Buenos Aires: The capital of Argentina, famously called the "Paris of South America," is known for the colorful buildings of La Boca, passionate tango culture, the iconic Obelisk on 9 de Julio Avenue, and its rich European-style architecture. · El Calafate: A town in the Santa Cruz province that serves as the gateway to Los Glaciares National Park. It is well-equipped for tourists, offering a variety of glacier tours and trekking expeditions. · Los Glaciares National Park: Located in southern Argentina, this UNESCO World Natural Heritage site was established in 1981. Spanning approximately 600,000 hectares, it contains 47 glaciers of the Patagonian Ice Field. Its crown jewel, the Perito Moreno Glacier, is one of the world's few "living glaciers" that is still advancing, providing spectacular displays as massive ice walls collapse daily. 💡 Travel Tips · Best Time to Visit: December to February (summer) is the ideal season for glacier exploration. · Visas: Travelers holding a valid U.S. visa can apply for the Argentine Electronic Travel Authorization (AVE). · Transportation: Travel between major cities relies primarily on domestic flights. · Gear: The southern region is cold and windy, so windproof and warm clothing is essential. The UV rays on the glacier are intense, so sun protection is a must.

#easytravelpost Lago Fagnano (Kami, 100 km long, split Argentina/Chile) sits 40 km west of Ushuaia via Ruta 3 → Ruta J (gravel, 2×4 fine dry, 4×4 after rain). The mossy beech forest shore is the 3 km trail from the Tolhuin-side Hosteria Kaikén to the lake's north arm, where Nothofagus pumilio and N. antarctica meet the reed bed and Sphagnum grows on the root flares with Polytrichum on the driftwood. I took a Ushuaia → Tolhuin bus (2 hrs, 6,000 ARS 2026 rate, cash ARS at the terminal), slept at Tolhuin (15,000 ARS hostel), biked 20 km to the Kaikén shore (rental 5,000 ARS/day). I went late April—shore 8°C, forest 5°C, moss frost-edged at 8 a.m. Wore waterproof boots; the shore is peat-and-reed, the beech floor root-mud. Mistake: I visited in July—snow 40 cm, the shore path vanished, turned back at the first Sphagnum sink. Nov–Apr only. Second mistake: I didn't bring 10,000 ARS small bills—the Tolhuin bus terminal bakery was cash-only, card minimum 20k. Third: I built a "moss seat" from a Sphagnum clump for lunch—a ranger from the Tolhuin APN sub-office (APN = Argentine Nat Parks) said "that clump is 15 yrs, sit on the log 10 cm away". Buy in Tolhuin: a 4,000 ARS medialuna + 3,000 ARS submarino at the bus-terminal café, not the 30,000 ARS hotel. Gear: a 50,000 ARS wind shell—Fagnano wind is 60 km/h. Local rule: Lago Fagnano north shore is partly private (Estancia Moat), ask at Kaikén before walking west; APN rules apply on the public strip: no drone, no cutting beech, no fire outside grills. The moss on the beech flare is the lake's edge filter—step on the cut track. Opinion: Fagnano is 40 km from Ushuaia and gets skipped for the Beagle Channel boat tour. Should APN mark a 2 km shore right-of-way from Kaikén and charge a 2,000 ARS honor box, or keep it estancia-negotiated? I'd mark it. Would you bus 2 hrs from the "end of the world" city for a mossy beech shore on a 100 km lake?

🇦🇷 Think Argentina is only about football? Think again. Beyond Messi and the beautiful game, Argentina is home to breathtaking waterfalls, ancient glaciers, endless landscapes, and the legendary “End of the World.” ✨ First time in Argentina? Argentina is more than football. It’s a journey through nature, culture, and adventure. 🇦🇷 Who would you explore it with? 👇

#easytravelpost Bahía Ensenada is on the Ruta 3 coastal bend 15 km west of Ushuaia, backing the caña-colihue (Chusquea culeou)–coihue forest** where you can canoe the bay then walk the shore: moss on the Chusquea cane 1 cm, Papillaria on the coihue 1 cm, Sphagnum in the freshwater arroyo 4 cm, 5°C in Nov, the Fuegian robin, the Beagle Channel north. No entry fee (costal municipal land), canoe rent ~ARS 15,000/2 hrs at the bay kiosk, Ushuaia→Bahía Ensenada bus 30 min (ARS 1,500) or drive Ruta 3. I based in Ushuaia (hostal ARS 35,000), bus 08:00, rented a canoe 09:00, paddled the inner bay 1 hr, beached at the arroyo mouth, walked the forest 2 km. The moss on the 1970s naval-radio hut was black-green with canoe-drip, ate a ARS 5,000 Ushuaia centolla-empanada kiosk, watched the 10:00 fog lift off the Beagle — Chusquea cane silhouette + moss floor. Mistake: I paddled at 14:00 in Jan — Beagle channel west wind chopped the bay, nearly swamped; canoe 08:00–10:00 calm only, the moss-forest walk is the 09:00–11:00 window, leech socks May–Sep. Another: Ruta 3 has no fuel past Tolhuin, fill in Ushuaia. Would you bus 1,500 ARS + canoe 15,000 for the Ushuaia→Bahía Ensenada mossy canoe-forest walk, or skip the paddle and do the free Glacial Martial coihue trail instead?

Messi Makes History, But the Country’s Real Magic Lies Beyond Football In the opening match of Group J at the 2026 international football tournament, Lionel Messi led Argentina to a convincing 3–0 victory over Algeria. With another goal added to his tally, Messi reached 16 tournament goals, equaling Miroslav Klose’s all-time record and moving into a tie for first place on the competition’s historical scoring chart. But records in Argentina aren’t limited to football. Visitors can also join guided glacier walks directly on the ice. 📍 El Calafate A gateway town surrounded by Patagonian landscapes, serving as a base for glacier exploration and hiking. 🌎 The City at the End of the World 📍 Ushuaia Known as “the End of the World,” Ushuaia is the southernmost city on Earth. Beyond it lies only the vast Southern Ocean before Antarctica. Many travelers come to take photos at the famous “Fin del Mundo” landmark and explore its rugged surroundings. It is also a key departure point for Antarctic expeditions and cruises. 🍷 Argentina’s Wine Capital 📍 Mendoza Mendoza is the country’s most important wine region and one of the most renowned wine destinations globally. It is especially famous for its Malbec wines. Don’t Miss 👀 📍 Winery Tours & Tastings Explore vineyards and sample locally produced wines. 📍 Andes Foothills Views Enjoy wine experiences framed by the dramatic backdrop of the Andes Mountains. 🍖 Argentina’s Most Famous Flavors Argentina is often associated with tango, football culture, and barbecue traditions. From roaring waterfalls and ancient glaciers to world-class wine regions and the southernmost city on Earth, the country offers unforgettable experiences across every landscape. So whether you’re drawn by culture, nature, or adventure, Argentina is a destination that stays with you long after the journey ends. 🇦🇷✈️🌊🍷🧊 #footballtravel

Ushuaia wasn't originally in our plans. However, after high expectations were met with major disappointment, we found ourselves incredibly bored. So, we spontaneously booked tickets to Ushuaia to check off the southernmost city on Earth. Up on a hill not far from downtown is a five-star resort & spa with breathtaking views. It's leaps and bounds better than the five-star hotel we previously stayed at in Buenos Aires. It even features an outdoor heated infinity pool that offers a sweeping view of the picturesque town. Ushuaia is famous for its king crab and black cod. The town has a few trendy, highly-rated restaurants. If you go early and luck is on your side, you won't even have to wait in line. Pairing the incredible food with a local craft beer while basking in the sun is pure bliss.

#cheapflightdeals Fly from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia, the main and usually cheapest route within Argentina. Airlines like Aerolíneas Argentinas and JetSMART run frequent daily flights, making it the most reliable option. Arriving in Ushuaia, known as the southernmost city in the world, immediately feels different—mountains drop into the sea, and the air is crisp and wild. The city sits along the Beagle Channel, with dramatic scenery in every direction. Once there, the experience centers around: · Walking along the waterfront with views of the Andes · Exploring the port area with boats heading into the channel · Visiting nearby nature like Tierra del Fuego National Park 👉 Recommendation: Best if you want a simple, efficient flight + full Ushuaia immersion.

Ushuaia is often called the “end of the world,” sitting at the southern tip of South America between dramatic mountains and the icy waters of the Beagle Channel. Visiting felt surreal — it’s one of those places that truly feels remote and adventurous. 🚢 Sail through the Beagle Channel to spot sea lions, seabirds, and small islands scattered across the water. 🥾 Explore the landscapes of Tierra del Fuego National Park with coastal hikes and forest trails. 🚂 Ride the historic End of the World Train through scenic Patagonian wilderness. ✈️ Most travellers reach Ushuaia by flying from Buenos Aires. #hiddenspots

There are several types of penguin tours departing from Ushuaia. You can choose a tour where you land on the island and walk along the trails, a cruise on a large ship through the Beagle Channel, or the tour I joined, which takes you close to the island on a small rubber boat. When I tried to book the landing tour, I was told it wouldn't be available for another four days. Reluctantly, I joined the rubber boat tour instead. However, as you can see from the photos, I was able to see a large group of penguins from just 1-2 meters away, and I was completely satisfied.

This train used to transport convicts to the logging camps, but recently the railway was restored and a vintage steam locomotive was put into operation. Now it carries tourists along one of the most beautiful routes in the world, deep into Tierra del Fuego National Park. Honestly, the surroundings are incredibly beautiful! It's hard to believe the city has such a difficult history. But you won't be bored: to lift your spirits, they put on performances featuring "prisoners" who jokingly try to kidnap tourists and take funny photos with them as souvenirs. If you'd like to spend a little more time exploring the park, you can head west to Lapataia Bay. There are excellent eco-trails here, perfect for walking for hours, admiring the mountain views. However, keep in mind that the park is quite extensive, so it's best to drive to the bay itself and then begin your hike from there. #winterescape #myitinerary #argentinatips #ushuaia #argentina #thingstodo #travel #travel2026 #argentina #ushuaia

Ushuaia is officially the southernmost city on the planet and the main gateway to Antarctica. It's located in Argentina, on the shores of the Beagle Channel, where two stern oceans meet. A trip to Tierra del Fuego requires preparation, so we've compiled all our experiences into one structured guide. From lighthouses and glaciers to penguin tour prices and the best places for dinner. Scroll through the post, explore the full guide (you know where to find it 😉), and be sure to save this material for your next trip to the End of the World! 💜 #winterescape #argentina #ushuaia #travel2026 #travel #thingstodo #myitinerary #argentinatips #ushuaia

Ushuaia began not as a tourist destination, but as a prison: it was prisoners who built most of the roads and buildings on this side of the world. They also constructed the prison itself, made of stone and wood. There was no chance of escape—there was simply nowhere to run, surrounded only by the icy ocean and mountains. Part of the complex was deliberately left without repairs or heating. Have you ever seen what a real prison looks like from the inside? Here you can walk through damp corridors, enter tiny cells, and even peer into prison toilets—and feel the cold that people lived in just 100 years ago. What you need to know before visiting: 2-in-1 ticket: The entrance ticket is valid for two consecutive days. Be sure to save it and get it stamped on the way out if you don't have time to see everything in one go. Ticket price: ~$25. Not just a prison: The same building also houses a maritime museum and an art gallery. Time: It's worth planning about 2 hours to explore the entire museum. This place makes you look at the cozy streets of modern Ushuaia in a completely different way. A city built on bones that has become a traveler's paradise. #winterescape #travel #ushuaia #argentina #travel2026 #ushuaia #argentina

Argentina is one of the few countries with islands inhabited by penguins. If you're visiting the southernmost city of Ushuaia, we recommend not wasting time and heading first to the Beagle Channel to see the penguins! There are many excursion ferries, and prices vary widely. The key is to make sure your tour includes Martillo Island—this is where penguins come to nest from October to March. They're said to be almost nonexistent the rest of the year. A standard tour that includes Martillo Island costs around $100. However, tours that include a drop-off and a walk on the island itself cost around $300. Although they've become accustomed to people, touching or approaching the penguins within 3 meters is strictly prohibited. So, we chose the cheaper option—watching from the deck—which was also an unforgettable experience. The penguins frolic just meters from the side of the boat. Notice how funny they swim—like little dolphins, jumping and diving back and forth. Besides the penguins, you'll see the famous red-and-white lighthouse at the end of the world and a multitude of sea lions, who have settled comfortably on the island next to the lighthouse. #winterescape #travel2026 #naturalwonders #travel #ushuaia #argentina

We thought it was just a city on the map, but it turned out to be the beginning of a big dream 😍 Ushuaia is the iconic "city at the end of the world" (Fin del Mundo). It's located on the coast of Tierra del Fuego, in southern Argentina, and is officially recognized as the southernmost city on the planet. It's unlike anything else in South America, more reminiscent of an alpine village, with stunning views from every window. Ushuaia sits on the shores of the Beagle Channel, which connects the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. The city has become the closest major port in the world, opening the gateway to Antarctica. It was in Ushuaia that we first dreamed of traveling to the icy continent. When you're standing on this Earth, nothing seems crazy anymore! We were initially skeptical about going to Ushuaia, but then we learned about penguins and seals and remembered the captivating stories of Jules Verne. And we realized: Ushuaia is a must-see destination to feel like part of a great adventure! #winterescape #ushuaia #argentina #travel2026 #travel #naturalwonders

This article continues from Part One, introducing Ushuaia, Argentina. Known as the southernmost city in the world and the gateway to Antarctica, Ushuaia is famous for these distinctions. Besides being the departure point for most cruises and research vessels heading to Antarctica, the city is also a great choice as a travel destination due to its important tourist attractions. Its main highlights include: 1. Tierra del Fuego National Park: Argentina’s southernmost nature reserve, featuring unique landscapes such as the “Drunken Forest.” Visitors can tour the park aboard the vintage “End of the World Train.” The park also houses the End of the World Post Office, where you can send postcards stamped with a special postmark. 2. Beagle Channel Boat Tour: Take a boat trip to see Seal Island, Bird Island, and the iconic red and white lighthouse. 3. The city itself is also a highlight. San Martin Street is the main street in town, lined with duty-free shops, restaurants, and colorful wooden houses. Along the long waterfront road, you can enjoy views of snow-capped mountains on one side and the harbor on the other. For local specialties, be sure to try the “spider crab” (king crab), known for its delicious meat. Other must-try dishes include Patagonian lamb chops and Argentine charcoal-grilled beef, both leaving a lasting impression on your palate.

I joined the Beagle Channel and Penguin Tour organized by Piratour. This is the only tour in Ushuaia that allows you to set foot on an island inhabited by penguins. The price is quite high, but it's very popular, so I recommend booking well in advance. The Piratour Penguin Tour is usually a half-day tour with round-trip bus transportation, but this time it was a full-day tour combined with a Beagle Channel cruise. We started early in the morning with a cruise from the port, and returned by bus. During the cruise, you can see colonies of seabirds resembling penguins, as well as rare marine animals like sea lions up close. You can also view the iconic Eclaireurs Lighthouse, a symbol of Ushuaia. About 15 minutes after setting sail, we arrived at Martillo Island, where we were greeted by numerous penguins! They were absolutely adorable. During the tour, participants are divided into two groups to land on the island. Each group spends about 30 minutes to just under an hour on the island. On the island, you can see the penguins right in front of you. To avoid startling them, you must walk quietly and refrain from talking. It was hard to contain my excitement because they were just too cute. This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Even though the tour was expensive, the chance to enjoy wild penguins up close made it an incredibly worthwhile experience!
