Cliffside Waterfalls as Picturesque as Paintings
Iceland + Faroe Islands · 12-Day Ultimate Condensed Edition
Route: Reykjavik → Faroe Islands (Tórshavn) → Reykjavik → Westfjords
Best Season: June to August (Midnight Sun / All Roads Open / Puffin Sightings), Westfjords accessible only in summer
Transportation: Arranged in segments, feasible without self-driving — car rental required in the Faroe Islands, strongly recommend guided tours in the Westfjords
· --
⚠️ Core Warning: Completing this route in 12 days is an "extreme challenge"
· Exploring the Westfjords alone requires at least 3 days; combining the Ring Road and Westfjords needs at least 13 days.
· This guide is compressed to the limit: 4 nights in the Faroes + 3 nights in the Westfjords, must fly in and out from two points, missing even one day will cause collapse.
· --
Day 1 Arrive in Reykjavik (overnight in Reykjavik)
· Pick up car / rest / stock up supplies
· Optional: Blue Lagoon (convenient for arrival/departure)
Day 2 Reykjavik → Faroe Islands (overnight in Tórshavn)
· Flight: Atlantic Airways exclusive, transfer in Copenhagen or direct from Reykjavik (check official website)
· Land at Vágar Airport, car rental must be booked 3 months in advance (sold out in peak season)
· Evening: Tórshavn old town Tinganes district, turf-roofed wooden houses + harbor sunset
Day 3 Faroe Islands · Vágar Island (overnight in Tórshavn)
· Gásadalur village + Múlafossur Waterfall: waterfall plunging directly into the Atlantic, postcard-perfect spot
· Sørvágsvatn lake: drone shots are legendary, cliff-top lake "floating" above the sea
· Optional: Drangarnir sea stacks hike (guide required, 3 hours)
Day 4 Faroe Islands · Outer Islands Tour (overnight in Tórshavn)
· Choose one (weather dependent):
· Mykines Island (May-August only): largest puffin colony, lighthouse hike, book ferry + hiking fees online in advance
· Kalsoy Island: Kallur Lighthouse hike, cliffs + sheep, accessible by ferry
· Evening: Tórshavn vinyl record shop, hunt for Faroese indie music
Day 5 Faroe Islands · Eysturoy Fjord (overnight in Tórshavn)
· Gjógv village: natural harbor town, volcanic rock + colorful wooden houses, very photogenic
· Saksun village: lagoon + turf-roofed church, beach mirror effect at low tide
· Optional: Slættaratindur summit (highest peak in the islands, clear day views)
Day 6 Faroe Islands → Reykjavik (overnight in Reykjavik)
· Early flight back to Iceland
· Afternoon: Reykjavik wrap-up — Hallgrímskirkja Church, Harpa Concert Hall, Sun Voyager sculpture
· Optional: Fly to Ísafjörður in the Westfjords (if joining a tour, enter the fjords tonight)
Day 7 Enter the Westfjords (overnight in Ísafjörður / Hólmavík)
· Transportation tipping point — strongly recommend guided tours, avoid self-driving risks:
· Guided tours: fly from Reykjavik to Bíldudalur / Ísafjörður, 2-day or 5-day tours available, includes car and guide
· Self-driving (only for experienced 4WD drivers): gravel roads + single-lane roads + frequent closures, complex ferry connections
· First stop: Hólmavík — Icelandic Sorcery Museum (witchcraft leather pants, authentic replicas)
Day 8 Westfjords Interior (overnight in Ísafjörður)
· Dynjandi Waterfall: the jewel of the Westfjords, 100-meter tiered waterfall cascading in 5 stages
· Ísafjörður: largest town, supply point, optional Vigur Island boat tour to see puffins
· Dinner: seafood soup + butter-braised prawns (expensive but worth it, 34,500 ISK for three)
Day 9 Europe’s Westernmost Point (overnight in Patreksfjörður)
· Látrabjarg Cliffs: dense puffin colonies, cliffs jutting into the Atlantic, a ritualistic European endpoint
· Red Sand Beach: steep mountain road only accessible by 4WD, rarely visited, ochre secret hidden behind mountains
· Optional: Ferry to Vigur Island (summer), population in single digits, a paradise off the beaten path
Day 10 Fjords Wrap-up, Return to Reykjavik (overnight in Reykjavik)
· Morning: catch any missed spots — Krossneslaug seaside pool (world’s end hot spring) or Arnarfjörður sea fishing
· Afternoon: flight from Ísafjörður to Reykjavik (if on a tour including flights, return with the group)
· Evening: final dinner in Reykjavik, lamb / whale / craft beer
Day 11 Iceland South Coast Extras (optional, overnight in Vík)
· Only if you have the energy/time: Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, black sand beach, plane wreck (ATV)
· If exhausted: relax in Reykjavik, café Fika, shop at design stores
Day 12 Reykjavik → Departure

🚨 The make-or-break "hard rules" for completing this in 12 days
1. Visa: Schengen (Iceland + Faroe Islands are in Schengen, Danish visa accepted)
2. Flights: Faroe Islands entry and exit tickets must be booked early, Atlantic Airways has very limited capacity, 3 months ahead in summer is not too early
3. Car rental in the Faroes: mostly manual transmission, automatics are expensive and rare; two toll tunnels charge automatically, link credit card
4. Westfjords must be toured with a guide: the most sincere advice for this route. Self-driving requires at least 13 days, you only have 3; road conditions/ferries/accommodation are difficult to manage alone. Iceland Travel offers 2-day/5-day tours, fly in and out, saving energy for sightseeing
5. Accommodation: book Hilton Garden Inn Tórshavn in advance; Westfjords mostly budget options, no hostels
6. Cash: use cards throughout, Faroese króna = Danish króna, Icelandic króna, keep 200 euros for emergencies
Gear: waterproof jacket + waterproof pants + waterproof hiking boots — the Faroes have four seasons in one day, rain can come anytime; Westfjords wind can blow you over, there is no "good weather," only "wear the right clothes"
---
This route is a "graduation test for hardcore travelers," not a vacation. Two ends of the world connected, 12 days only enough for a whirlwind tour + flights to keep going. If you want to take it easy, choose one — either the Faroes + Snæfellsnes Peninsula, or the Westfjords + South Coast. If you insist on both, strictly follow this plan, missing even one day will cause collapse.
