The most magical part is the sound. The water rushes, but the canyon walls echo the sound back to you, creating a symphony. I sat on a large limestone boulder and listened to the bats begin to stir. The Mexican side looked raw and rugged; a wild horse stood on the opposite bank. This is the "Gobi" edge—a meeting of two worlds. I stayed until the last light, and the stars emerged. The temperature dropped 20 degrees quickly; I had a fleece. I recommend this trail for anyone wanting a short, high-impact experience. The drive back to the Chisos Basin is 30 minutes, so budget your time accordingly.

Park entry $30/vehicle. The Rock Slide rapid is 2 mi upstream, Class IV, portage only. I didn't paddle, just waded the first 100 m—illegal to cross to Mexico, no port of entry here. Mistake: I wore flip-flops for the creek crossing and sliced a toe on broken limestone; closed shoes mandatory. Water in the park only at Rio Grande Village and Chisos. Discussion: is the 0.7 mi walk-in worth the 45 min drive, or should first-timers paddle the boomerang route for the full 8 mi canyon feel?
