3 days in Western and Eastern Liguria from Milan 🇮🇹
#italy #liguria #riviera
The itinerary format offers maximum scenic diversity in 3 days: postcards of Eastern Liguria and the turquoise bays of Western Liguria.
· --
🧜🏼♀️ Day 1 — Camogli (≈2h30 from Milan)
Camogli is one of the most photogenic towns in Eastern Liguria. It boasts a narrow waterfront, tall pastel-colored houses, and a sense of a "non-touristy" atmosphere, away from the Cinque Terre.
The main landmark is the Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta, literally standing on the water.
For swimming, there's Spiaggia Libera di Camogli: a pebble beach overlooking the town's historic façade. The water is clear and deepens quickly. In the evening, take a relaxing stroll along the sea and dine with a sunset view.
Camogli exudes scenic charm: compact, aesthetically pleasing, and free from the bustle of large resorts.
· --
🧜🏼♀️ Day 2 — Bergeggi and Spotorno (≈3 hours from Milan)
Bergeggi is one of the cleanest waters in Liguria. Spiaggia di Bergeggi beach is renowned for its clear waters and views of Isola di Bergeggi.
The best option is to rent a kayak or SUP to get closer to the island and explore the rocky grottoes.
In the evening, transfer to Spotorno: a more resort-like town with a long sandy beach and a lively downtown area. Stroll through the old streets and have dinner by the sea.
This day is all about the beach and the open sea.
· --
🧜🏼♀️ Day 3 — Varigotti (≈3h15 from Milan)
Varigotti is a compact and visually one of the most spectacular beach villages on the Western Riviera.
The main point is Baia dei Saraceni: turquoise water and light sand between rocks.
To the south is Spiaggia del Malpasso, a more secluded bay.
The historic part is Borgo Saraceno: low, colorful houses right on the beach.
For panoramic views, take the Sentiero del Pellegrino trail overlooking the Ligurian Sea.
Varigotti is "beach + turquoise," the most southern experience within Northern Italy.

How to plan your trip
Day 1 — Eastern Liguria (Camogli)
Days 2–3 — Western Riviera (Bergegi, Spotorno, Varigotti)
This route is best done by car. During peak season, be sure to consider limited parking near the beaches and arrive early in the morning.
Result: Liguria offers three distinct characters: a pastel-colored town, an open sea with an island, and a turquoise bay.

Chilled lovely village by the sea in Liguria
#mediterranean #liguria #italy
Varigotti has a very different feel from other Ligurian villages I’ve visited. Instead of the usual medieval stone houses, you find these colorful, square-shaped buildings with flat roofs, almost with a North African or Mediterranean island vibe. Walking through the narrow lanes between them feels special, especially since many of the houses open right onto the beach.
The beach itself is one of the highlights — wide, pebbly, and with clear water that looks amazing against the backdrop of the cliffs. Even though it’s popular in summer, it doesn’t feel as crowded or hectic as the big-name spots further east. There’s a relaxed rhythm here, with people sunbathing, swimming, or just enjoying a drink at one of the simple bars along the shore.
What I liked most was the mix of laid-back beach life and unique architecture. It feels different from the rest of the Ligurian coast, and that makes Varigotti stand out as somewhere worth spending time.
