The city welcomes you with a leisurely pace. You don't feel the daily hustle and bustle we dread so much during the workweek. Instead, you can truly feel the breath of history: Vladimir was once the capital of Northeastern Rus', and that majestic status is etched into every stone. We really wanted to start our trip at the Golden Gate. We did see it, but not completely 😁. Unfortunately, it was under restoration this time, though we still managed to get a glimpse of it through the scaffolding. Standing right in front of it, it hits you: princes used to ride through this very archway, and the fates of entire nations were decided right here. Next up was the Assumption Cathedral. We aren’t exactly experts in iconography, but Andrei Rublev's frescoes are hard to mistake for anything else. Our special discovery was the Cathedral of St. Demetrius. It’s absolutely covered in intricate stone carvings. We walked all the way around it, taking in the animals and birds carved into the walls. They call it a "Bible in stone" — and honestly, it really does look like a secret message from the past. And what's a trip without a stroll down Bolshaya Moskovskaya Street? The whole area is steeped in history; walking there feels like stepping right into a movie scene. All in all, we came home exhausted, but completely fulfilled. — this is how Igor Grabar, a Russian art historian, museum specialist, painter, and restorer, described the Church of the Intercession on the Nerl. The exact date of completion of the church is unknown. It was built during the reign of Andrei Bogolyubsky on the banks of the Nerl River, on an artificial mound, to serve as a gateway to the trade route. During the spring floods, the floodplain meadows around the church are submerged, and the church appears to be standing in the middle of the water—a mesmerizing sight. In fact, this church is beautiful at any time of year. During Soviet times, a high-voltage power line was laid 60 meters past it, but in 2018, following public outcry, the power line was finally removed from the Bogolyubovsky meadow, and now nothing interferes with admiring this magnificent creation of medieval Rus'. There are eight ancient white-stone churches in the Vladimir and neighboring regions (listed in order of distance from Vladimir): 1. Dormition Cathedral in Vladimir (built during the reign of Andrei Bogolyubsky in 1160); 2. St. Demetrius Cathedral in Vladimir (built by order of Prince Vsevolod the Big Nest in 1197); 3. Church of the Intercession on the Nerl in Bogolyubovo (built during the reign of Andrei Bogolyubsky in 1165 or 1158); 4. Church of Sts. Boris and Gleb in Kideksha (1152, during the reign of Yuri Dolgoruky); 5. Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin in Suzdal (1225, during the reign of Prince Georgy Vsevolodovich of Vladimir); 6. St. George's Cathedral in Yuryev-Polsky (1234, by decree of Prince Svyatoslav Vsevolodovich); 7. In the Yaroslavl region, in Pereslavl-Zalessky, is the Transfiguration Cathedral, which was also built under Andrei Bogolyubsky in 1157, as this was also part of Vladimir-Suzdal Rus'; 8. No matter what you’ve got planned—whether it's dashing off somewhere up North or just slipping away to a quiet village—you need to do it right now, because it's midsummer! Before you can even blink, the rustling leaves on the roads will remind you that these warm days are numbered... We absolutely love road trips—a car gives you the ultimate freedom to just pull over halfway between your departure point and your destination. You can stop right in the middle of a field or on the shore of a forest lake, hang out for half an hour sipping tea from a thermos, breathe in the scent of grass and earth, listen to the hypnotic chirping of grasshoppers or the wind rustling through ripening grain, watch the floating clouds, and feel that you are alive, moving forward, and something new awaits ahead. My photos capture exactly these kinds of “roadside” views. This is Opolye—the central part of the Vladimir region, as well as parts of the Yaroslavl and Ivanovo regions, where the most ancient Russian cities are located: Vladimir, Suzdal, Gavrilov Posad, Yuryev-Polsky, Rostov the Great, Pereslavl-Zalessky, and the village of Bogolyubovo. This area still preserves unique monuments of pre-Mongol architecture from the 12th and 13th centuries. But Opolye is also about magnificent landscapes: soft, rolling hills, endless fields, winding rivers (the Nerl, Koloksha, and Kamenka), forest lakes, and lonely churches on the horizon. Here, history is woven right into the landscape itself. These are the very fields that drew our ancestors here a thousand years ago. Actually, the term “Opolye” only took shape in the 19th century thanks to the development of Russian science, but the word itself has been known since ancient times and meant arable land. On a satellite map, Opolye still looks like a “bald spot” in the middle of the forests. The fertile soil here (Vladimir chernozem) yielded great harvests of rye, wheat, barley, millet, flax, hemp, and legumes. This surplus led to trade with other regions, providing the resources to expand political influence and attract new populations to settle the lands. Slavs fleeing raids migrated here, sparking demographic growth. Cities, churches, monasteries, and fortifications were built. Animal husbandry, crafts, trade, architecture, and literature all flourished—forming the unique cultural tradition of the Vladimir-Suzdal land. Opolye provided the material foundation that turned the Vladimir-Suzdal Principality into one of the key centers of ancient Rus. It was precisely during the 12th and 13th centuries that white-stone architecture blossomed: the principality had the funds to invite highly skilled craftsmen and construction managers, and to transport white stone from afar. It's impossible not to admire this stone tower every time you drive past it on Lybidskaya Highway. The Red Cross Hospital was built in 1913-1914 according to the designs of Vladimir diocesan architect Leonid Mikhailovich Scherer and is considered one of his finest buildings. It is an example of neo-Russian architecture, a style known as Art Nouveau. At the time, the country was widely celebrating the tercentenary of the House of Romanov, and state institutions were built in this style for the celebration, as well as for the royal family's tour of the country. For example, in Nizhny Novgorod, the architect V.A. Pokrovsky built a state bank in the neo-Novgorod style for the Emperor's visit. This hospital, however, was built after Nicholas II's celebratory visit to Vladimir, but it was called the "Hospital in Memory of the 300th Anniversary of the Reigning House of Romanov." The Romanov family, not Russian by blood, sought to emphasize their affiliation with the Russian spirit and culture in every way possible, and they were catered to. The hospital's façade is adorned with tower-shaped windows and a tower-shaped porch, as well as incised decoration, which is a delight to admire. On the courtyard side, the walls are unplastered, almost devoid of decoration, and the building's style resembles a red-brick industrial structure, which is also very beautiful. The Revolution occurred shortly after the celebration, but it's interesting that the building retains its functional purpose a hundred years later (a rarity☝🏻), although this does, of course, ruin its appearance in places. It's a shame that such a beautiful building is flanked by giant pipes, not hidden underground, and that in the evening, this fragile beauty is marred by rather unsubtle lighting. The monastery was established by Saint Peter, the Metropolitan of Kyiv, who relocated the metropolitan seat from Vladimir to Moscow in 1325. The architectural complex of the cloister took shape between the 16th century and the mid-18th century.

The "Golden Ring of Russia" route includes eight cities. In 2026, the project was expanded to the "Greater Golden Ring," adding approximately 50 towns. I visited three of them: Vladimir, Suzdal, and Murom 🌱🪎🐓 📍VLADIMIR A city with history, it celebrated its 1035th anniversary in 2025 🏹 I suggest starting our journey from 🏵️Cathedral Square, home to the 12th-century 🏵️St. Demetrius Cathedral (with frescoes by Byzantine masters still preserved inside) and the 🏵️Assumption Cathedral (where Ivan Kalita, Dmitry Donskoy, and Alexander Nevsky were crowned). ⚜️ We pass through the 🏵️Palaty Museum and come to the observation deck in 🏵️Pushkin Park overlooking the Klzma River next to the monument to Prince Vladimir and Saint Theodore. Continue along Bolshaya We walk along Moskovskaya Street to the 🏵️Golden Gate, built between 1158 and 1164, and turn toward the 🏵️Water Tower, which houses the "Old Vladimir" Museum, and at the very top, an observation deck. After descending, we find ourselves on the 🏵️main pedestrian street, Georgievskaya, where we also visit the 🏵️Borodin Forge and the 🏵️Old Pharmacy, which operated from 1805 to 2005. 📍SUZDAL This is a 10th-century city-reserve on the Kamenka River. We begin our route at the 🏵️Open-Air Museum of Wooden Architecture and Peasant Life. It houses wooden buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries, brought from various parts of the Vladimir region. Don't forget about the 🏵️ "Suzdal Khomlins" (miniature bronze figurines). Afterwards, we are greeted by the 🏵️ Suzdal Kremlin: the 13th-century Nativity Cathedral, the Assumption Church, and gates with frescoes from the time of Vladimir the Monk. Further, through the 🏵️ Trading Rows, we find ourselves on Lenin Street, where we find the very same buildings, consisting of one-story wooden houses. We also visit the 🏵️Rizopolozhensky Convent, the Spaso-Evfimiev Monastery, and the Pokrovsky Monastery 🪆 And don't forget to try the cucumber jam 🥒 📍MUROM Founded in 862, many years before the Christianization of Rus' At the entrance to the city, we were greeted by the 🏵️Epic Stone with the carved face of Ilya Muromets 🤴 And then we passed the 🏵️Armored Train of Ilya Muromets, who fought in WWII. There's also a 🏵️Water Tower here, which is still in use today, and across the road is the 🏵️Kalach Monument. ROSTOV VELIKY Not Rostov-on-Don! This is Rostov Veliky, one of Russia’s oldest towns. Its spectacular white Kremlin complex, colorful domes and historic churches make it one of the most recognizable stops on the route. 📸 It’s especially beautiful in the morning or around sunset when the white walls and colorful domes catch the light. 🌆 4. YAROSLAVL If you want something bigger than a small historic town, Yaroslavl is the place. Located on the Volga River, it’s filled with churches, monasteries, old merchant buildings and historic streets. Its historic center is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is one of the stops where you can easily spend a full day or two. 🌊 5. KOSTROMA Continue along the Volga to Kostroma. The city has a relaxed atmosphere and is famous for places such as the Ipatiev Monastery, historic architecture and its riverfront. It’s a good place to slow down after the larger Yaroslavl. 🧵 6. #worthitornot Getting to Suzdal isn’t the most convenient since the town doesn’t have a train station. You first have to take a train from Moscow to Vladimir, then transfer to a local bus. The good thing is that Vladimir’s bus and train stations are right opposite each other, so the transfer itself is pretty straightforward. The problem came on my way back. Two scheduled buses simply didn’t show up. Luckily, I had left extra time before my train because I originally planned to stroll around Vladimir. That buffer time ended up saving me from missing my train instead. Suzdal itself, though, is lovely. It’s compact, walkable, and noticeably more affordable than Moscow. It also feels much more intimate and friendly. Instead of the scale and intensity of the capital, you get a small historic Russian town where almost everything is within walking distance. So, is Suzdal worth the inconvenience? For me, yes. I think it’s worth the trip from Moscow, especially if you want to experience a quieter and more traditional side of Russia. However, I wouldn’t say it effortless. The train-to-bus transfer takes extra time, and after my experience, I definitely wouldn’t trust the bus timetable enough to plan a tight connection. I did the whole trip from Moscow and back over 3 days, which gave me enough time to enjoy Suzdal without rushing. I'll start with the pros: ✅ The location is great! Everything is within walking distance; ✅ There's parking in a gated community. But you can see the cons in the photos: I stayed in two different rooms. The first was okay, but the second... looked like an abandoned dacha. The mini TV with a screen smaller than my laptop was really nice, but I don't know why it's there, because to watch it, you just have to stand against the wall. 😅 Everything is very old and shabby, the mattresses in the rooms are uncomfortable, the staff is unpolite, I'd even say rude. This applies to the receptionist at check-in; there was a nice woman on the second day. I didn't want to waste time on transfers and hassles. Vladimir is perfect for long walks, and we only slept in the room. There's no soundproofing, and in the morning there was a smell outside the windows. I spent the night in a sewage treatment plant, and it was terrifying (the smell of sewage was terrible). But there's a plus, too – we quickly packed up and headed off 😱 #goldenring #vladimir
