Explore Wakayama Castle: A Dreamy Journey Through History and Cherry Blossoms
Wakayama Castle, located in the city of Wakayama, Japan, boasts a rich history and captivating scenery. Built in the 16th century, the castle was not only a symbol of power at the time but also a stage for numerous historical events. Although the main structure was destroyed during World War II, it was rebuilt in 1958. Today, Wakayama Castle retains its former glory, attracting countless visitors to explore its grounds.
From March to April each year, Wakayama Castle becomes an ideal spot for springtime cherry blossom viewing. When the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, the entire castle area is enveloped in a sea of pink flowers. Whether you're taking photos or simply enjoying the view, it's an unparalleled experience. Every corner here is filled with photographic inspiration, making it a perfect backdrop for both professional photographers and amateurs alike to capture unforgettable moments.
However, visitors should be aware that mosquitoes around Wakayama Castle might affect your experience. It's advisable to bring mosquito repellent to ensure a worry-free visit. This way, you can fully enjoy the beautiful scenery.
Additionally, the castle's O-hashi Roka (Great Bridge Corridor) is also worth a visit. This historic corridor connects the castle to surrounding facilities and was built to allow the feudal lord and his retinue to travel between the Ninomaru (the administrative and residential area) and Nishinomaru (Momijidani Garden). Visitors are required to remove their shoes when entering to maintain its original appearance and cleanliness. This setup not only brings you closer to nature but also allows you to experience traditional Japanese culture more deeply.
In conclusion, Wakayama Castle is not only a witness to history but also a fusion of nature and culture. Whether you're a history enthusiast or a cherry blossom viewer, you'll find your own joy and inspiration here. It's definitely a travel destination not to be missed!
Kuroshio Market, a Must-Visit Fish Market in Wakayama with Tuna Cutting Show
Located a short drive from Wakayama, Kuroshio Market is a well-known local seafood market. Although it's not very large, it's always bustling with people. The parking lot next to it doesn't have many spaces, so you might have to queue, but you can offset your parking fee with purchases inside. If you don't want to wait, you can park near the amusement park instead, which isn't too far if you walk through the park.
Kuroshio Market's other major highlight is the live tuna cutting show featuring black tuna, held daily at 12:30 PM and 3:30 PM. It's quite a spectacle, and the freshly cut tuna is sold in the sales area to the left 👈, with prices starting at one thousand yen.
There's also a variety of fresh sashimi, fried foods, and grilled items. The grilled black tuna has more texture, so if you don't like chewy food, you might want to skip it. There's also an option to buy fresh seafood and grill it yourself in the outdoor dining area, which is a unique experience.
A bit pricy but worth going - Fish Market at Wakayama
One of the most visited tourist spot at Wakayama, Kuroshio Market.
It is cleaner and tidier than that at Osaka, which made us feel more comfortable. There are separated stalls which sell sashimi, skewers, sushi, juices and drinks, etc.
We grabbed some sushi including scallop and tuna, and also a bowl of sashimi rice with different parts of tuna. Also some eel&egg and shrimp skewers, and last but not least local mandarin juice, which is one of the must drink. The shrimp was bad as they were very overcooked due to prolonged heating, but the rest were fine. We also enjoyed the tuna cutting show.
The market is surrounded by a fruit market, an amusement park so you can visit multiple places at the same time.
Visiting the Wakayama Castle
#2023travelwish
One of the attractions to visit in Wakayama Prefecture in southern Japan is the Wakayama Castle. It sits on a hill overlooking almost the entire Wakayama City.
Before you reached the castle, you will pass by a beautiful garden and a bridge in a lake. Entrace fee to the castle is 400 yen.
My travel wish for next year is to explore northern side of Japan which is from Tokyo up to the cold area of Hokkaido. 😍

Visiting Kuroshio Market at Marina City in Wakayama was a feast for the senses! Located right by the beautiful marina, the views of the sparkling blue water and boats were absolutely stunning. The market itself was lively and full of energy, with fresh seafood everywhere you looked.

Wakayama | Europa Port with a European Flair
Located next to Wakayama Kuroshio Market, Europa Port is a small theme park brimming with European charm. Designed to resemble a medieval Mediterranean town, it features a French street centered around a fountain plaza, a majestic Spanish castle, and quaint alleyways with staircases perfect for photo ops. Enjoying an ice cream or a cup of coffee while strolling in the sea breeze is a delightful experience.
Entrance to Europa Port is free, but the twenty-plus rides inside require individual tickets. Alternatively, you can purchase an unlimited ride pass. The attractions have a bit of an old-school vibe, making it a great place to relive childhood memories. Many of these rides are now rare finds, making it a unique spot for photos. The park isn't very large, so if you're not interested in the rides, a leisurely walk around takes about an hour. It's recommended to plan your visit in conjunction with a trip to Kuroshio Market.
