Dangjia Village｜A Southerner’s First Impression of a Northern Ancient Village The first time I heard the name Dangjia Village, I thought it was a revolutionary education base. But when I arrived, I found it to be a genuine traditional ancient village. It was originally built in the second year of Zhishun in the Yuan Dynasty (1331), nearly 700 years ago. Back then, merchants with the surnames Dang and Jia settled here, building houses and forming a village. Since there were more people with the surname Dang, it was named “Dangjia (Jia) Village.” From a high vantage point, the courtyards with blue bricks and gray tiles spread out layer by layer along the mountain slope. Seventy-two alleys intricately connect 123 Ming and Qing dynasty siheyuan (courtyard houses), 11 ancestral halls, 25 watchtowers, and other ancient buildings. The entire village nestles in a mountain hollow, surrounded on all sides by loess terraces. This was my first time stepping into a northern ancient village. After photographing southern ancient villages for three years, it was only at Dangjia Village that I truly understood the differences between northern and southern old villages. Southern ancient villages emphasize being close to mountains and water, with water entrances in front and mountains behind. Camphor and banyan trees are planted everywhere, making the village seem as if it grew out of the forest. Dangjia Village is located in a mountain hollow, with only the Mishu River winding around the village edge. The houses here seem to be “stacked” on the hillside, layered one on top of another, with each household adjacent to the next. Southern ancient villages are mostly brick-and-wood structures, with high walls, narrow alleys, open courtyards for lighting, and long eaves. Dangjia Village’s siheyuan have a square layout, with the courtyard in the center, doors and windows all facing inward, and solid outer walls. Due to terrain constraints, southern houses are often two or three stories, built along the mountain’s shape; Dangjia Village’s siheyuan are mostly two stories but overall more solid and grounded. The defensive features are also different. Dangjia Village has 25 watchtowers, the Miyang Fort, and narrow “one-person alleys” where you can only pass sideways. Next to the wheel ruts on the bluestone slabs are arrow slits designed to defend against bandits. This level of defense is rarely seen in southern ancient villages. But at their core, the north and south share similarities. The brick, wood, and stone carvings in southern villages are delicate and intricate, and Dangjia Village’s carvings are equally exquisite. The 24 auspicious patterns on the base of the filial piety monument are carved meticulously, and the stone carvings on the doorposts are solid craftsmanship.
