2026 Whitby Travel Guide: must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transport & travel experiences (updated in August)

Whitby quickly became one of my favorite day trips in North Yorkshire. It’s a charming seaside town full of history, dramatic scenery, and great food. We arrived around noon and headed straight to Magpie Café for lunch. Whitby is famous for serving some of the best fish and chips in England, and Magpie Café is one of its most iconic restaurants. The queue for the restaurant was quite long, so we decided to order from the takeaway instead. The prices are a little cheaper, but keep in mind that it doesn’t come with lemon, and the mushy peas is charged separately. If you’re planning to eat in the restaurant, I’d recommend making a reservation in advance. Otherwise, the takeaway is a great option, just be mindful of the seagulls. The fish and chips definitely lived up to the reputation! The fish was incredibly fresh, with a light, crispy batter and a large, thick fillet that was perfectly flaky inside. After lunch, we walked along West Pier all the way to Whitby Harbour West Lighthouse. The views over the North Sea are beautiful, and along the pier we saw families and children catching crabs using buckets, nets, and crab lines that are sold in many of the local shops. It’s a fun local tradition to watch. There are also plenty of places selling ice cream, fudge, and other traditional seaside sweets. On our way back, we walked up to the Captain Cook Memorial. James Cook began his maritime career in Whitby as a young apprentice, learning the navigation skills that would later lead him to map Newfoundland in Canada, circumnavigate New Zealand, chart Australia’s east coast, and become one of Britain’s greatest explorers. The viewpoint here is fantastic, you can see the harbour, the North Sea, and the impressive ruins of Whitby Abbey across the town. Don’t miss the photo opportunity at the nearby Whalebone Arch. Next, we crossed the River Esk and explored the charming Church Street, one of the prettiest streets in Whitby. It’s lined with independent shops selling local crafts, Whitby Jet jewelry, antiques, sweets, and unique souvenirs. You’ll also notice countless references to Dracula. Author Bram Stoker visited Whitby in the 1890s and used the town as the setting for key scenes in his famous novel. In the story, Dracula arrives in Whitby by ship before making his way to the Abbey. Today, the town fully embraces its gothic connection with themed shops, ghost tours, and an annual Goth Weekend festival. At the end of Church Street, we climbed the famous 199 Steps to St Mary’s Church and Whitby Abbey. The steps themselves have become one of Whitby’s most iconic landmarks, and the view from the top is well worth the climb. Whitby Abbey has an incredible history. The original monastery was founded in 657 AD by Saint Hilda, became one of the most important religious sites in Anglo-Saxon England, was destroyed during Viking raids, and later rebuilt by the Normans. The magnificent ruins you see today date from the medieval abbey, which was abandoned during King Henry VIII’s Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century. The dramatic ruins overlooking the sea later inspired Bram Stoker while writing Dracula. There is a café and a public toilet near the Abbey, making it a good place to take a short break before exploring further. Tickets can easily be purchased at the entrance if you haven’t booked in advance. After visiting the Abbey, we made our way back down through town and caught the train home. #uktrip Whitby is a great place! The views are stunning, both in the town and also at the Abbey/Castle! On a clear day you can see Norway from Whitby Pier/jetty. There are boat tours, usually 30 minutes, a variety to chose from as well. There is also a Whale watching tour, I didn't go on this as I wasn't aware and you needed to book in advance, but this is must! There is a nice cafe with beautiful views close to the Abbey where you can get stunning pictures. There is a railway and local buses running to places. There are also tour buses that take your sights in Whitby.

The Fisherman's Wife Whitby is a famous seafood restaurant in Whitby, offering fresh seafood dishes alongside stunning sea views. Conveniently located in the heart of the town, it's easy to find and situated along the path to the viewpoint. Be aware that the restaurant gets very crowded during lunch and dinner hours. To avoid long waits, it's recommended to visit around 11 AM for lunch or before 6 PM for dinner. Their signature dish, fish and chips, is a must-try, featuring incredibly fresh fish. Another surprising delight is the baked mussels, which are fresh, plump, and free of any fishy smell—truly a wow moment. Fried shrimp and scallops are also highly recommended. While there are many other dishes to choose from, we couldn't try them all. If you're visiting Whitby, this restaurant is a must-visit for fresh and delicious seafood that won't disappoint.

From York to Edinburgh, you must not miss Whitby. I've had this seaside town on my list for a long time. With its medieval streets and colorful boats, it's a picture-perfect scene. However, Whitby is much more than that. It's the place where Captain Cook set sail, and it flourished during the Age of Exploration. It's also the birthplace of vampire culture. 130 years ago, the Irish novelist Bram Stoker wrote the famous vampire novel *Dracula* in Whitby. · Whitby is not a big town, but half a day is still a rush. From the ancient abbey ruins to the bustling harbor and beach, it was undoubtedly the most memorable part of my trip to England. The weather was also very fitting. At Whitby Abbey, there was a cloudy, vampire-like atmosphere, but when we got to the town beach, the sun suddenly came out, and it felt like a perfect vacation day. · Here is the route of our city walk, which you can refer to: Whitby Abbey → St. Mary's Church and Graveyard → 199 Steps → Papa's Fish and Chips → Whalebone Arch → Whitby Beach · ⭐Highlights ✅Whitby Abbey: This war-torn abbey was built between the 11th and 14th centuries and is located on a high point in the heart of the town. This is also Whitby's east cliff, which offers excellent views overlooking the entire town and harbor. The red-roofed houses, blue sea, and ancient abbey ruins create a stunning picture. At the bottom of the steps is Church Street, where you can find antique shops, candy stores, and Gothic souvenir shops. ✅Whalebone Arch: In the 18th century, Whitby was a famous whaling port in England, and the town became famous overseas for its whaling industry. Norwegian fishermen gave Whitby a pair of whale jawbones, which were made into a whalebone arch. Not far from the arch is Captain Cook's passage, which is also the starting point of Captain Cook's voyages. ✅Whitby Beach: Opposite the east cliff is the sandy beach at the west end of the town. The sand is fine, and you can take pictures of the colorful cabins and the lighthouse by the sea while strolling along the caramel-colored sand. It's suitable for sunbathing and playing in the water in summer. · 🍴Food ✅Fish and chips is a national dish of England, and Papa's Fish and Chips has been rated by the BBC as the best fish and chips in the UK. Along the way, you can enjoy panoramic views of the town and the stunning seascape. Any photo you take here will be a masterpiece. Many of England’s seaside resorts can be labelled as run down and dated, however one that has stood the test of time is North Yorkshire’s Whitby. The town made famous by Bram Stoker’s Dracula has plenty to keep you occupied from a visit to its imposing hilltop abbey, to wandering around its narrow streets and alleys to just taking a stroll along the beach. The scones here were really delicious! And since this place is also used as a hostel, I recommend it if you want a unique experience. Magpie Cafe is really famous for its fish and chips. When I arrived in Whitby, this seaside town was just waking up. . The town lies where the Esk River meets the sea, its rooftops on both sides shrouded in a thin gray-blue mist. The fishing harbor was quiet, masts casting long shadows on the water. On the distant east cliff, the outline of the abbey faintly appeared on the skyline—like a massive Gothic tombstone silently overlooking the world that had yet to awaken. . Whitby is an ancient fishing town on the North Yorkshire coast. It’s famous for Dracula but is much more than vampire legends. Captain Cook began his seafaring career here, and even earlier, in the 7th century, a nun named Hilda founded the first abbey atop these cliffs. . The ruins of Whitby Abbey stand on the cliff, facing the North Sea. The towering Gothic arches and crumbling walls before me were built in the 13th to 14th centuries as part of a Benedictine monastery. They remained almost intact until the 18th century, but after Henry VIII dissolved the monastery in 1538, the interior was stripped and the stones repurposed. In 1914, German warship shelling severely damaged the west facade. . What remains now are only these bones carved by sea wind and time. I stood alone in the center of the nave ruins. The broken arches reached toward the sky, and the sea breeze, blowing through every crack, let out a low moan. At that moment, I finally understood why people say there are three kinds of abbey ruins in the world: ordinary, picturesque, and Whitby Abbey. . This is not a ruin. It is a long poem written in stone about faith, war, destruction, and time. . If you want to photograph the abbey without people—truly empty shots that speak to solitude—be sure to enter right when it opens. The abbey usually opens at 10:00 AM (9:30 AM on some busy days in peak season), with the busiest hours between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM. The abbey in morning light has a texture that noon can’t replicate. . If you’re staying in York, taking a morning train out to the coast at Whitby is an absolute must! I spent a half day doing this trip, and escaping to the fresh sea air, historic harbor views, and incredible food was easily one of my favorite northern getaways. 🚉 Transit station Scenic Morning Train from York: I caught an early train straight out of York Railway Station to Whitby. Sitting back and watching the North Yorkshire countryside roll past in the morning light set the perfect tone for the day. Harbor Takeaway Fish & Chips: The absolute best thing to do upon arrival is grab a steaming hot takeaway box of fresh fish and chips and eat them right by the harbor. The Birds Are Surprisingly Friendly: One unexpected perk—the local doves and seabirds around Whitby harbor were so much gentler and friendlier than the aggressive seagulls I've run into down south in places like Brighton! I could actually enjoy my lunch outdoors in peace. (They just stood there trying to get my attention but not stealing or picking directly) Whitby Abbey Bonus Coastal Walk: After climbing the famous 199 Steps up to Whitby Abbey, if you have the time and energy, please follow the cliffside coastal path along the Cleveland Way straight to the historic fishing village of Robin Hood's Bay. The ocean views along the cliffs are breathtaking. (I didn't have the time ~3 hours to do the hiking but I would very much return and do that next time!) 🚆 How I Got There & Budget Hacks: Route: Caught the morning train service out of York to Whitby. We stayed here for a few nights to try out a motorhome before deciding whether to buy one. The hosts were very welcoming and eager to assist. The site was well-maintained, with generously spaced pitches. The shower rooms and toilets were well-equipped and clean, and there was also a laundry/washing room available. I’d gladly recommend this place to a friend. If we go ahead with buying a motorhome, we’ll surely return. It’s also conveniently located on a bus route to Whitby, Scarborough, and Leeds.
