Haicang Temple, located in Liangzhou District, Wuwei City, Gansu Province, sits in the middle of the Hexi Corridor and has been a key hub on the northern route of the Silk Road since ancient times. This land, formerly known as Liangzhou, was a crucial center for the fusion of Han and Tibetan cultures and the convergence of Central Plains and Western Region civilizations. Haicang Temple's origins can be traced back to the Taixing era of the Eastern Jin Dynasty (321 AD), when it was founded by Zhang Mao, the governor of Liangzhou, who built it on the Lingjun Terrace. Although Haicang Temple is not large, its Zen spirit is as tranquil as a deep sea, earning it the reputation of "the crown jewel of Northwest Buddhist temples." Sitting quietly in the main hall for a while, accompanied by the chanting of sutras, one's mind gradually settles. Hanging in the hall are colorful plaques inscribed by literati and scholars throughout history, recording the temple's history and exuding a rich cultural atmosphere. This temple blends Han and Tibetan architectural styles, with a courtyard layout distributed along the central axis, including the Mahavira Hall, the Sutra Repository, and the Three Saints Hall, among others. The overall style is solemn and simple. The temple's design, from the outside in, guides each person's steps and mind to delve deeper in sync, showcasing a state of unity between body and mind—a sacred place for practitioners and travelers seeking spiritual continuity. It comprises several parts, including the Flying Horse Trampling a Flying Swallow Square, a Han Culture Street, the Wuwei Leitai Han Culture Museum, Leitai Temple, and the Leitai Han Tomb. Leitai Temple is a tall, rectangular, man-made earthen platform, approximately 85 meters high, 105 meters long (north-south), and 100 meters wide (east-west). It is named Leitai because of the Leizu Temple built on the platform, and is world-renowned for the Leitai Han Tomb, where the "Flying Horse Trampling a Flying Swallow," a symbol of Chinese tourism, was unearthed. At the end of August last year during our annual leave, we took the Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop, passing through Dunhuang Mogao Caves, Jiayuguan, and also visited Zhangye Matisi Temple. I didn’t expect Zhangye to be so suitable for family trips, so this National Day holiday we specifically brought the kids here again. It’s hard to imagine that within 1-3 hours’ drive from the city, you can take your kids to see such diverse landscapes as snow-capped mountains, grasslands, deserts, canyons, and wetlands, and also visit cultural sites like Matisi Temple and the Giant Buddha Temple. Previously, I was most impressed by the Duku Highway, but Zhangye is really much more family-friendly! Zhangye’s scenery is beautiful, varied, and rich in layers—truly a wonderful surprise. Most people on the Qinghai-Gansu loop just treat this place as a stopover and only visit the Danxia landform, which is such a pity. The Northwest is truly a “spiritual recharge station” for us city parents. Looking at the vast wilderness and distant mountains, the golden meadows and streams beneath the snow mountains, it feels like traveling with kids has more hope and joy. If it weren’t for a few provinces I haven’t checked off yet, I’d really want to come back next National Day! I had planned this trip to Hexi for a long time, and finally, at the beginning of the Year of the Horse in 2026, I fulfilled this long-cherished dream. Thank you to my travel companions for their trust and understanding… Starting from Wuhan, we passed through the Zhengzhou Shang City Ruins, stopped at the Xi'an Archaeological Museum/Xiangji Temple, and then transferred in Lanzhou (Jincheng) for an overnight sleeper train to Dunhuang. 🏜️Dunhuang Three Days (December 24th of the lunar calendar) Classics are always classics, timeless and enduring! Day 01: Crescent Lake in the desert, a beautiful landscape of the Western Regions created by the interplay of nature and human effort. A camel ride and a climb up a sand dune to overlook the crescent moon make for a truly fulfilling experience… Day 02: The Romanticism of the Chinese ·Yangguan Pass: "I urge you to drink another cup of wine, for beyond Yangguan there are no old friends." ·Yumenguan Pass: "Why should the Qiang flute lament? The willows and spring breeze do not reach Yumenguan Pass." ·Western Jin Dynasty Brick Tomb: The underground life of a powerful clan in Hexi. ·Western Thousand Buddha Caves: An unexpected encounter, a scene "picked up" along the way. Day 03: The Mogao Caves are beautiful, plus small moments of happiness, the Tang and Song Dynasty cave eaves sharp and slanted. ☁️A Day in Jiayuguan (December 27th of the lunar calendar) The shopkeeper said that the wind in Jiayuguan blows from spring to summer, and from summer to winter. Tianshui is a wonderful place, rich in Three Kingdoms culture, Qin culture, and so many lovely little wooden houses. Day 01 Gangu: Jiang Wei's Tomb – Grand Cross Square/Confucian Temple (Ming Dynasty) – Elephant Hill Grottoes Day 02 Route A: Maijishan + City Area; Route B: Xingguo Temple/Confucian Temple in Qin'an County (less crowded, beautiful scenery, quiet and secluded) + Ji Xin Ancestral Hall/Houjie Mosque in the City Area 🪦Baoji Two Days (Seventh Day of the Lunar New Year) Just when I was struggling to decide where to go in Baoji for two days, someone recommended two large tombs, so I immediately made arrangements: Day 01 Qin Gong Tomb (Eastern Zhou Dynasty) – Li Maozhen Tomb (Five Dynasties) – Jintai Temple (Ming and Qing Dynasties) Day 02 Bronze Ware Museum: The bronze ware and Qin State artifacts in the exhibition hall are all top-notch and plentiful, and the lighting is also excellent.
