The museum offered a guide who walked us through all exhibits and ensured we got a feel of it all. there is a museum right outside the museum which makes logistics easy. area was clean and locals were so accommodating❤️ beautiful town with so much personality! Xingtai is located in the southern part of Hebei Province, at the eastern foot of the Taihang Mountains. It hides the 3,000-year-old cultural heritage of the ancient Xingzhou City on one side 🏯, and holds the magnificent scenery of Taihang canyons and karst caves on the other ⛰️. For this three-day trip, I mixed culture and nature, so I wasn't rushing or hiking all day, making the pace much more relaxed 🌿. Day 1 | City and ancient town tour ✨, focusing on cultural landmarks. Start the morning at the Xingtai Museum. Admission is free, but you need to book in advance. It’s closed on Mondays 📜. The museum is packed with highlights like Xing kiln white porcelain and Shang Dynasty artifacts; two hours is just right. A few minutes' walk away is the Great Kaiyuan Temple. It’s free and doesn't require a booking. With its Tang Dynasty temple, red walls, and ancient trees, the atmosphere is perfect—quiet and photogenic 🌳. Grab lunch in the old town alleys. In the afternoon, head to Dahequan Park. Admission is free, the lake water is clear, and you can visit the Guo Shoujing Memorial Hall inside. It’s very pleasant when the breeze blows. In the evening, head straight to Qingfeng Tower and Haonanguan Ancient Street. Both are free. Once it gets dark and the lights come on, the street food vibe is incredible 🏮. A small gripe: the museum is closed on Mondays, and I almost made a wasted trip. The ancient street gets packed on holidays, so look for corners to avoid the crowds when taking photos. Day 2 | In-depth tour of Kongshan Baiyun Cave 🪨. Start early and head to the Kongshan Baiyun Cave in Lincheng. It’s a 5A-rated karst cave scenic area with an admission fee. The cave maintains a constant temperature of 17°C year-round, so be sure to bring a light jacket 🧥. Walking into the cave, you’ll see layers of stalactites. With the lighting, it feels like stepping into a fantasy underground world. The ground is very slippery, so definitely don't wear high heels. After exploring the cave, stop by the nearby Tianti Mountain. It’s not very high, and the boardwalks wind through the mountains, offering wide, open views from the top. Return to the city for the night; don't stay in the mountains. A quick note: tour groups flock to the cave, so go early to avoid the crowds. You cannot touch the stalactites inside, or you’ll be fined, so keep that in mind. Day 3 | Hiking at Tianhe Mountain (Love Mountain) 💞. This is the birthplace of the legend of the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl. There is an admission fee. With mountain streams, waterfalls, the "Heart-Lock" boardwalk, and the 1314 Sky Ladder, it’s perfect for a slow hike and getting some fresh air 🌊. If you aren't very fit, you don't need to hike the whole way; the scenery halfway up is beautiful enough. Have a simple lunch of wild mountain vegetables at a farmhouse restaurant at the foot of the mountain. Head back to the city in the afternoon. If you have time, you can stroll through Yuan Street. It’s free, and the old alleys are full of local stalls where you can buy simple souvenirs to end your trip. To be honest, the mountain areas are far away, and the round-trip travel is tiring. Don't try to hit multiple deep-mountain attractions in one go, or you’ll easily burn out. 🏨 Accommodation advice: For both nights, just choose the Qingfeng Tower or Tianyi City business district in Xiangdu District. You can get a chain hotel for around 100-something yuan. There are restaurants and night markets right downstairs, and it’s convenient for traveling to and from the western mountain areas. Avoid the homestays at the foot of the scenic spots; most have old facilities, ridiculously high prices during holidays, and poor soundproofing, so you won't get a good rest 😮‍💨. 🚌 [Transportation guide]: For arrival, prioritize taking the high-speed rail to Xingtai East Station. Taxis and shared bikes are very convenient within the city. If you aren't driving, you can charter a car or carpool to the mountain attractions. Definitely don't get into unlicensed "black" cars on the side of the road, as they often overcharge. The distance between mountain attractions is far, and public transport is infrequent, so plan your time before you head out 🚗. 🍜 Local food, try it without hesitation. Weixian Huoshao (baked wheaten cake) has a crispy, flaky crust and savory meat filling—it crumbles with every bite 🥙; Xingtai Menbing (braised pancakes) features pancake strips soaked in broth, served with garlic and vinegar—a dream for carb lovers; Longyao Lamb Soup has a milky white broth with no gamey taste; it warms you up instantly. Also, try Lincheng Crispy Fish; the bones are so tender you can chew them right up, and it’s very flavorful. Try to go to old shops in the old town; the food at scenic area restaurants is average and overpriced. ⚠️ Tips to avoid pitfalls. There is a large temperature difference between day and night in the mountains, so keep a light jacket and non-slip sneakers handy, and bring mosquito repellent. Don't buy local specialties at high prices at the entrance of scenic spots; the prices at city supermarkets are more reasonable. Don't hike on undeveloped trails alone in the mountains; safety first. Check the opening hours of attractions that require reservations in advance to avoid a wasted trip. This trip had the charm of an ancient city and the nature of the Taihang karst caves. Shangdang has always been the "spine of the world," and deep within the Taihang Mountains lies half of China's ancient architecture. There are approximately five to eight surviving wooden structures from the Five Dynasties period in China, with five generally confirmed by scholars, and Changzhi alone is home to three of them. However, many of these national treasure-level ancient buildings are scattered in remote villages and mountain valleys. They are far away, hard to find, and you cannot see the internal beam structures. The new Changzhi Museum has opened, hosting a major new exhibition with distinct regional characteristics: "A Thousand Years at a Glance: Essence of Shangdang Ancient Architecture." Just before my second trip to the Zhuozhang River Valley, I unexpectedly "did my homework" here. The exhibition features 27 selected national treasure-level ancient buildings from Shangdang, all handcrafted into wooden miniature models. After more than 60 years of excavation during the Ming Dynasty, it became the largest Ming Dynasty grotto complex in the country✨ 💦 Water and Land Hall: The natural spring pool inside the grotto never dries up, and a field-shaped stone bridge spans the water.
