In the Huashan Mountains (华山 Huàshān), located 130 km from Xi'an, there's the legendary Death Trail. I wanted to walk it after seeing numerous photos and videos on Chinese TikTok. The entrance to the trail (3 photos) is at the South Summit (you'll have to climb a fair number of steps to get there). I was unlucky enough to have to wait in line for an hour and a half, but that was the purpose of my visit, so I decided to wait. The trail is closed in bad weather (it's dangerous). Movement along the route is one-way, meaning that until one group returns, the next one cannot enter. A group consists of approximately 25 people, all attached to the rope with safety lanyards and carabiners, so overtaking is impossible. At the end of the group, there's a turnaround area; when the last person in the group reaches it, everyone goes back in the opposite direction. The route includes a vertical descent and ascent—physical strength is required! Regarding my impressions, I really enjoyed this hike! Qinglong Temple, located south of Xi'an, was first built in 582 AD during the reign of Emperor Wen of Sui, initially named "Linggan Temple." In 711 AD, during the reign of Emperor Ruizong of Tang, it was renamed "Qinglong Temple" and gradually developed into a core center of Esoteric Buddhism during the Tang Dynasty. The Tang Dynasty Esoteric Buddhist master Huiguo resided here, and the Japanese monk Kukai traveled to Tang China in 804 AD, studied under Huiguo, and founded the Shingon sect after returning to Japan, making Qinglong Temple the ancestral temple of Japanese Buddhism. During the Huichang era of Tang (845 AD), Buddhism was banned, and the temple fell into disrepair. Qinglong Temple's most important historical significance lies in the exchange of Esoteric Buddhism between China and Japan. After archaeological excavation and restoration, the site now houses the "Huiguo and Kukai Memorial Hall," the "Kukai Memorial Monument," and the "World Peace Prayer Tower," embodying the profound significance of the eastward transmission of Buddhism. Master Kukai practiced here, bringing Esoteric Buddhism back to Japan and opening a new chapter in East Asian Buddhist cultural exchange. Xi’an Bell Tower & Drum Tower : Capture some pics of these iconic towers by day, but the nighttime lighting is awesome too! 4. Muslim Quarter (By Zhonggulou Square): Snack zone alert! Try roujiamo (Chinese burger) and yangrou paomo (lamb soup). Do stop by and try some of the street foods if time permits. 5. Chang’an Pedestrian Street: Shop local treats and souvenirs. It’s always a good idea to stroll along these streets to get a feel of the local vibes. 6. Guangren Temple in Xi'an was first built in 1705 (the 44th year of the Kangxi Emperor's reign) and is the only Gelugpa Tibetan Buddhist temple in Shaanxi Province. During his inspection tour of the western frontier, Emperor Kangxi, to consolidate the borders and appease ethnic minorities, issued an edict to build this temple and personally inscribed an imperial stele, bestowing upon it the name "Guangren," meaning to widely spread benevolence and universal charity. From then on, Guangren Temple became an important site for the integration of Tibetan and Han cultures and the only Green Tara sacred site in China. Located in the northwest corner of Xi'an's city wall, the temple occupies a strategic location and served as a temporary palace for lamas from Northwest China and the Kham-Tibet region on their pilgrimage to Beijing. This made Xi'an a hub for multi-ethnic exchange during the Qing Dynasty, elevating its religious and cultural status, and Guangren Temple became a symbol of Tibetan Buddhism in Shaanxi. The temple houses the world's only surviving life-size statue of the twelve-year-old Shakyamuni Buddha (its appearance and style are identical to the life-size statue in the Jokhang Temple in Tibet), and the largest Thousand-Armed Avalokiteshvara in Shaanxi, fully demonstrating the artistic style of Tantric Buddhism, where compassion and majesty coexist. As the first rays of dawn break through the winter sky, stepping through the gates of Guangren Temple, one walks along the stone path, a light frost still clinging to the ground. The temple buildings, nestled in the slanting shadows of the city walls, stand serenely and solemnly, seemingly breathing in Zen wisdom in the morning light. At this time, few people are around, and all is quiet. The red walls and golden tiles reflect the light of the Buddhist halls, creating a tranquil atmosphere. In the courtyard, the deep, resonant chanting of lamas echoes like sacred music, blending Buddhist chants with the environment, revealing the solemnity and beauty of Tantric practice.
