What makes it special: This is an Immersive Theater experience, where the audience becomes part of the story. The seats move along with the scenes throughout the performance, making you feel as if you’re traveling back to the Qin Dynasty. In some scenes, the palace flies overhead, while in others, warriors emerge from beside you. One of the most talked-about scenes is the boat ride, where the audience feels as though they’re sailing through ancient reed fields. 🗿 At the end, when the soldiers gradually transform into the Terracotta Army, many are moved to tears. In the Huashan Mountains (华山 Huàshān), located 130 km from Xi'an, there's the legendary Death Trail. I wanted to walk it after seeing numerous photos and videos on Chinese TikTok. The entrance to the trail (3 photos) is at the South Summit (you'll have to climb a fair number of steps to get there). I was unlucky enough to have to wait in line for an hour and a half, but that was the purpose of my visit, so I decided to wait. The trail is closed in bad weather (it's dangerous). Movement along the route is one-way, meaning that until one group returns, the next one cannot enter. A group consists of approximately 25 people, all attached to the rope with safety lanyards and carabiners, so overtaking is impossible. At the end of the group, there's a turnaround area; when the last person in the group reaches it, everyone goes back in the opposite direction. The route includes a vertical descent and ascent—physical strength is required! Regarding my impressions, I really enjoyed this hike! It wasn't scary (the insurance gives me a sense of security), and the views are stunning! Compared to the via ferrata at the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon, I liked this one more! (There are separate posts about the via ferrata, Mount Avatar, the Grand Canyon, and the Zhangjiajie route.) Useful information: Bring your passport—they'll take it at the entrance. You can give any phone number (if you don't have a local one). You can leave your belongings with the trail staff (there are racks at the entrance). Xiangji Temple is located in Shenheyuan, Guodu Street, Chang'an District, Xi'an City. The temple boasts a serene environment, bordered by the Hao River to the south, the Yu River to the west, and Fanchuan County to the north. Founded in 681 AD (the second year of the Yonglong reign of Emperor Gaozong of Tang Dynasty) to commemorate the passing of Master Shandao, one of the founders of the Pure Land School of Buddhism, it was listed as one of the "Eight Great Temples of Fanchuan" during the Tang Dynasty, holding a very important position. The name "Xiangji" comes from the Vimalakirti Sutra, which mentions "India has a country of many fragrances, and the Buddha is named Xiangji," implying a pure Buddhist land with continuous incense offerings. The Tang Dynasty poet Wang Wei praised this place in his poem "Passing by Xiangji Temple," leaving behind the famous line, "I didn't know Xiangji Temple, several miles into the cloud-capped peaks." The temple's architectural layout follows the typical "facing south" longitudinal axis layout of Chinese Buddhist temples: the mountain gate, the Hall of Heavenly Kings, the Great Buddha Hall, and the Dharma Hall unfold along the central axis in a solemn and symmetrical manner. The roof's curves echo the peaks of the Zhongnan Mountains, and a stele inscribed "Ancestral Temple of the Pure Land School" stands before the stone archway, highlighting its orthodox status in Buddhist history. The most representative building in the temple is the Shandao Pagoda, a Tang Dynasty brick pagoda in the pavilion style. It has a square plan, with a base length of 9.5 meters. Originally 13 stories, 11 remain, standing approximately 33 meters tall. The pagoda has undergone numerous renovations, clearly showing the marks of various eras. Xiangji Temple enshrines Amitabha Buddha of the Western Pure Land as its main deity, symbolizing the guidance of sentient beings to rebirth in the Pure Land of Bliss. The carvings and ritual implements within the halls inherit the Pure Land School's philosophy, showcasing the dialectic of salvation through "self-power" and "other-power" in the Saha world. The Great Ci'en Temple, located in Yanta District of Xi'an, was first built in 648 AD (the 22nd year of the Zhenguan era of Emperor Taizong of Tang) by imperial decree of Crown Prince Li Zhi to commemorate his mother, Empress Wende (née Changsun), and the monk Xuanzang was appointed to oversee its affairs. This temple later became a major center for the translation of Buddhist scriptures in Chang'an during the Tang Dynasty. It was not only the ancestral temple of the Faxiang-Weishi school of Buddhism but also a sacred site where Han Chinese Buddhist culture and beliefs converged. The tallest building in the Great Ci'en Temple, the "Big Wild Goose Pagoda," currently seven stories high and 64 meters tall, was personally supervised by Xuanzang in 652 AD (the third year of the Yonghui era) to house the Buddhist scriptures, statues, and relics he brought back from India. It has undergone numerous repairs throughout history and still stands majestically today, becoming Xi'an's most representative Buddhist landmark. Since the Tang Dynasty, the imperial court has repeatedly ordered its repairs and bestowed plaques to show its respect. The temple's history can be traced back to the second year of the Zhenguan era of the Tang Dynasty (628 AD), built by imperial decree of Emperor Taizong of Tang, Li Shimin. Legend has it that the temple's construction is related to the legend of the Jing River Dragon King; Emperor Taizong built Guanyin Hall to appease the resentment of wronged spirits and personally planted a ginkgo tree to ward off bad luck. The most famous feature of the Ancient Guanyin Temple is its thousand-year-old ginkgo tree, said to have been planted by Emperor Taizong himself, standing approximately 30 meters tall. Every late autumn, the ginkgo leaves turn a golden sea, carpeting the courtyard like a golden rug, becoming one of Xi'an's most representative Zen-inspired landscapes. Beneath the tree lies the "Guanyin Ancient Spring," its clear, sweet water considered sacred, used by believers for prayer and blessings.
