Genyen South Line, no retreat In addition to the small beauty of Tagong Grassland in western Sichuan, I found a small Switzerland hidden in Litang, a village protected by the Genyen Snow Mountain. ✨Here you can see snow-capped mountains, forests, hot springs and rows of cabins The important point is that this is Ding Zhen’s hometown ⛳ Fire in Ranrikaka Village, Litang, Ganzi Altitude about 3800 🚘Self-driving: Start from Chengdu, follow 318, pass Kangding, and then arrive at Litang Ranrika Village 🌆Accommodation: You can stay at the Genyen Hot Spring Hotel, which is located at the entrance of the village. It is the same hotel as the cabin and is a little expensive. However, there are many other accommodations in Rika Village, which are cheaper, but the conditions are relatively worse. If you like Ding Zhen, you can stay at his uncle's house - the Genyen Prince Hotel. 🌲Nearby attractions ✨ Log cabin It is located on the road from Genyen Town to Ranrika Village, very close to the village. The cabin is great for taking photos. If the weather is good, you can stay here for a night. It seems that you can even see the Milky Way at night. ✨Observation Deck There is an observation deck on the way to the Eye of Genyen, where you can overlook the entire village. If you go early, you can also see the clouds and mist. ✨Eye of Genyen Summer is the dry season, and there is no water in the spring. It will not rain until September. Only by using a drone can you capture the majestic beauty of the spring. ✨Cuopugou A very beautiful lake, backed by snow-capped mountains and surrounded by forests. Under the sunlight, the lake surface is sparkling and extremely beautiful.

Xiangcheng is a small town located in the western part of Sichuan province, surrounded by towering mountains and dotted with traditional Tibetan villages. The town is famous for its rich Tibetan culture and scenic landscapes, making it a popular destination for both domestic and foreign tourists. Some of the best places to visit in and around Xiangcheng include: Luding Bridge: A historic bridge built during the Qing Dynasty, famous for the Battle of Luding Bridge that took place during the Chinese Civil War. Mount Gongga: The highest peak in Sichuan province, with spectacular views of snow-capped mountains, alpine forests, and glaciers. Yala Snow Mountain: A scenic area located about 30 km from Xiangcheng town, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountain ranges and valleys. Tagong Grassland: A vast grassy plain dotted with traditional Tibetan villages and Buddhist monasteries. Hailuogou Glacier Park: A scenic park located about 80 km from Xiangcheng town, featuring stunning glaciers, hot springs, and alpine forests. Overall, Xiangcheng is a hidden gem in western Sichuan, offering visitors a unique glimpse into traditional Tibetan culture and breathtaking natural beauty.

As night falls and the valley breeze sweeps across the vast, fertile fields, I stumbled upon a truly breathtaking feast in the Tibetan countryside of Qingde Town. In the past, watching a performance meant being separated from the stage in a theater; this time, the stage was set right between natural white Tibetan houses and swaying cornfields. Brilliant lights cut through the night sky, dancing across the rough white walls, while the distant mountains were illuminated with the words "Welcome to Xiangcheng." Accompanied by cheers and the rustling of the wind through the crops, people in magnificent traditional attire danced to the rhythm between heaven and earth. At that moment, the field became the grandest theater, breathtakingly romantic. Beyond this immersive live performance, what is most intoxicating is the inherent authenticity and tranquility of this land. Watching the white wash pour down, it feels as if the white Tibetan houses grew naturally from the earth. From pastoral delicacies to intangible cultural heritage crafts, from passionate singing and dancing under the stars to cozy contemplation in front of the white Tibetan houses at dawn—life should be like this. There is no need to rush; simply immerse yourself in this pure land and rediscover the rhythm of your soul amidst the light, shadows, and the warmth of daily life. 📍 Location: Qingde Town, Xiangcheng, Ganzi, Sichuan Zhongde Village Viewing Platform

My lens has captured countless magnificent sights, yet when the skirt of the Xiangcheng Fengzhuang unfolds in the plateau sunlight, my heart still trembles. This is a garment that breathes. Its 108 pleats hold the measure of time, while the five-colored patches of red, yellow, black, green, and gold are embroidered with mountains, rivers, livestock, and blessings. The square back pad, known as "Gongre," even holds a thousand-year-old legend about banana leaves shielding against the rain. With every stitch, the richness of Tibetan culture, the elegance of the Naxi, and the gentleness of the Central Plains are woven together, creating a "wearable folklore chronicle" unique to this river valley. In full ceremonial attire, it is solemn. Gilded ornaments chime softly with every step, and the pleated skirt blooms like mountain flowers, as if stepping out from the old days of white Tibetan houses, imbued with the ritual of festivals and the dignity and glory of ancestors. When worn in its everyday style, it becomes a part of daily life. Stripped of pearls and silver ornaments, the simple fabric wraps around the figure at work—walking along field ridges or standing by the hearth. As the wind lifts the hem of the garment, it moves in the same rhythm as the breeze sweeping across the barley fields. The best way to preserve intangible cultural heritage is never to lock it away. It is to let ancient patterns still rest on shoulders in daily life, and to let thousand-year-old stitches still be woven into the present. It lives in the light, on the people, and through the bloodlines of generation after generation—vibrant as ever, and enduring forever.

Xiangcheng County in Garze, Sichuan, hides a super niche treasure! ✨ Known as the Home of Chinese White Tibetan Houses, this is the largest gathering of such homes in the country. Over 6,000 white Tibetan houses spread along the Shuoqu River, nestled between barley fields and valleys. Viewed from above, they look like a string of scattered white Buddhist beads—it’s unreal! 😭 🏡 These white houses are actually traditional dwellings unique to Xiangcheng, known as White Tibetan Houses, the first of the Three Wonders of Xiangcheng. Around the autumn harvest each year, locals pour a white clay slurry called Age Earth from the top of the walls to paint the entire house white. This both protects the walls and symbolizes good luck—it's said that each time they do this, it's equivalent to lighting 1,000 butter lamps and chanting 1,000 peace sutras. It’s such a meaningful ritual! 🙏 📸 Check-in tips: ✅ [Gadan Sangpi Robuling Monastery] 📍 Address: Gadan Sangpi Robuling Monastery, Xiangcheng County, Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province (County Road V09 South) 🕐 Hours: Open all day, year-round The monastery and the cluster of white Tibetan houses complement each other, creating a serene and sacred atmosphere. Every photo you take here looks like a masterpiece! 📷 ✅ [Zhongde Village Viewing Platform] 📍 Address: Zhongde Village, Qingde Town, Xiangcheng County, Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province The view here is incredible. You can overlook the entire cluster of white Tibetan houses. On sunny days, the light hitting the white walls makes it look like it has a built-in filter! 🌞 Sunny days, valleys, barley fields, and white Tibetan houses... this is a filming location for the movie 'I Belonged to You'! 🎬 Every frame is breathtaking! You'll regret it if you don't visit at least once in your life! It’s beautiful and uncrowded right now, so go for it! 🏃‍♀️

Tired of the standard 318 route? Start from Litang and head to Shangri-La via Xiangcheng and Dongwang Grand Canyon. It's less crowded with wild scenery—canyons, river valleys, and Tibetan villages. The rooms have oxygen supply, so you won't feel stuffy at night. The courtyard is quiet and perfect for relaxing and chatting. I'm sharing a fantastic route I took last year that spans Yunnan and Sichuan provinces, focusing mainly on the Hengduan Mountains. It's a visual feast with rich experiences, and I highly recommend it. You can plan for a trip between Oct 25 and Nov 5. The best window for autumn foliage can vary slightly each year depending on the weather, but based on most experiences, the last few days of October are generally the best time. The detailed route plan is as follows (with practical tips): 🍁Day 1: Dali – Lugu Lake 🎈Must-visit recommendation: Waiting Coffee at Lugu Lake. The second floor has a huge panoramic viewing window. If you don't like running around, just sit here for an afternoon and take in the lake view; you'll have absorbed the essence of Lugu Lake. 🍁Day 2: Lugu Lake – Daocheng Yading (Lu-Ya Route) The specific route is the Yalu Road – Provincial Highway 220 – National Highway 227, also known as the Lu-Ya East Line. The total distance is less than 300 km. Before 2024, it was notoriously difficult to traverse, but now it is basically paved with asphalt all the way. However, the road is narrow with many curves. It takes 6–7 hours to cover less than 300 km, so be sure to leave Lugu Lake as early as possible to avoid driving at night. Also, try to avoid rainy or snowy weather. 🎈Recommended stops along the way: Mana Chajin Viewing Platform, Muya Monastery. You can stay directly inside the Daocheng Yading Scenic Area at night to maximize your sightseeing efficiency for the next day and enjoy the morning mist. There are many hotels and homestays open in Yading Village now, catering to all budgets. 🍁Day 3: One day in Yading Scenic Area Tips: If you aren't looking to do the long trail, one day is enough. The essence of Yading lies in the combination of snow-capped mountains, canyons, colorful forests, streams, and pastures—it's absolutely top-tier autumn scenery. For how to reach the best viewing spots quickly, refer to my pinned post. In summary, it's basically a mix of long and short trails. You'll get the highlights and it's definitely worth the trip. As for Milk Lake and Five-Color Lake, they are suitable for those who are physically fit, determined, have a "since I'm here, I might as well" attitude, and want to challenge themselves. 🍁Day 4: Yading – Deqin Meili Generally, take G227 to G214 National Highway. Along the way, you will pass Xiangcheng, Maowu Grand Canyon, the Jinsha River Bend, and Benzilan, with diverse climate changes. Although the travel time is long, the changing scenery along the way is never boring. 🎈Must-visit recommendation: When passing near Xiangcheng, I saw a particularly beautiful pasture, so I stopped the car and walked deep into it. Streams, Tibetan houses, small wooden bridges, golden hillsides, and herds of cattle and sheep formed a grand pastoral painting of golden autumn. Nature truly has the power to soothe the soul. 🍁Day 5: Deqin Meili – Baima Snow Mountain – Tacheng The highlight of this day belongs to Baima Snow Mountain. Although it was a pity not to see the sunrise over Meili Snow Mountain in the morning, at the insistence of our guide, we took the old G214 National Highway through Baima Snow Mountain. In late October and early November, the mountains are covered in gold, which is visually stunning. Like Daocheng Yading, it's a place I definitely want to visit again in autumn. 🎈Add navigation point: Pillow Basalt Landform 🍁Day 6: Tacheng – Shangri-La Tacheng was an impromptu addition to the itinerary, and it was a pleasant surprise. It's a very comfortable and relaxing place. In the early morning, I drank coffee at the homestay while watching the clouds and mist swirling in the valley. In the morning, I went to the Yunnan Snub-nosed Monkey National Park, and in the afternoon, I visited the Lapu Winery for a tasting. It was a very peaceful day. 🍁Day 7: Relaxing at the Shangri-La Ren'an Pasture Hotel

Day 5: Drive around Napa Lake, see the cattle and sheep on the grassland, and head back in the afternoon. ⚠️ Important driving tips ▪️ Some sections of the Xiangdao Highway have falling rocks and many curves. Drive carefully on rainy days. Download offline maps in advance, as many sections have no signal. ▪️ When driving at high altitudes, avoid fatigue. Stop and rest every 1-2 hours. ▪️ On your first day in Shangri-La, move slowly. Avoid taking long baths or showers immediately to prevent altitude sickness. ▪️ Keep your gas tank full at all times, as there are few supply points along the way.

I visited Xiangcheng once before and found it to be such a simple, humble place. Returning here now, it has unexpectedly become a place I truly yearn for.

As long as you visit in the right season, combined with good weather, Yading will no longer be a "place you regret not visiting, but regret visiting once you're there" In autumn, the weather on the plateau becomes more stable, with clear skies most of the time. Combined with the golden leaves of pine and fir trees, it's like a poetic oil painting. ———— 🚩6-Day, 5-Night Luxury Autumn Tour of Daocheng Yading Private tour: Bookable from 2 guests, one tour per booking . 🚗Itinerary Overview: D1: Chengdu - Siding Lake - Red Lake - Yuzixi - Xinduqiao D2: Xinduqiao - Litang (Changqingchun Korer Monastery, Thousand-House Tibetan Village) D3: Litang - Hang prayer flags at the pass - Xiangcheng, explore Zhongde Village (Fengzhuang costume experience, afternoon tea, matsutake and Tibetan chicken) D4: Xiangcheng - Daocheng Yading (short route) - Shangri-La Town D5: Shangri-La Town - Daocheng Yading (long route) D6: Depart from Daocheng Yading Airport . 🔥Handpicked luxury accommodations throughout, immersive vacation experience 🏆Parinanka Resort Hotel Fairytale wooden cabins on the plateau! A friend complained to me the other day that he spent nearly 20,000 last year traveling the 318. When he got back, he found out the car rental fee had been doubled by middlemen, and the accommodation was at "partner hotels" the driver took him to, costing 200 extra per night. I thought that kind of information asymmetry was ridiculous. But don't be scared off. On the same route, with the same 10-day car rental, if you calculate the full Sichuan-Tibet route carefully, you can actually save a lot per person. Especially from August to October this year, Daocheng Yading is offering free admission for 3 months—you'd be missing out if you don't take advantage of this. · - 🏔 Attractions I'm giving you a few new perspectives this time. At the Yala Snow Mountain viewing platform in Tagong Grassland, you can see the "Golden Mountain" at sunrise without an admission ticket. Maoya Grassland is right next to Litang, and the flower fields are in full bloom in August. Cuopugou was developed recently, so it's less crowded and beautiful, with free hot springs. The Bangda viewing platform at the Nujiang 72 Bends is perfect for photos that will get tons of likes on social media. During the free admission period at Daocheng Yading, you can see all 3 sacred mountains. The short hike to Chonggu Temple takes 3 hours round trip, which is manageable even for those with average fitness. · - ⚠ Tips August to September is the tail end of the rainy season. Landslides and rockfalls are concentrated between Bomi and Tongmai, so check the weather before you leave. Altitude sickness varies from person to person; take Rhodiola rosea a week in advance, and don't start the trip if you have a cold. Daocheng Yading has implemented reservation limits, and it will be crowded during the free admission period, so book on the official platform at least 3 days in advance. Use sunscreen with SPF 50 or higher, and don't forget sunglasses and lip balm—the UV rays are stronger than you think. · - 🚙 Vehicle Options For a group of 4, I recommend the Toyota Prado 3.5; it has enough power for all the mountain passes on the Sichuan-Tibet line, and the back seat isn't cramped for 3 people. For 2 people, the Tank 300 is a great value option at 500–600 per day. The Land Cruiser is suitable for those who prioritize comfort; it's slightly more expensive but offers better chassis and space performance. Before departure, check the brake pads, spare tire, and snow chains for all vehicles. There are gravel roads on the connecting section between the 317 and 318 in August. 🗺 Travel Itinerary Sichuan-Tibet Highway travel itinerary (10-day southern route): D1 Chengdu > Kangding > Zheduoshan Pass > Xinduqiao D2 Xinduqiao > Tagong Grassland > Bamei > Luhuo > Garze D3 Garze > Yaqing Temple > Litang (World's Highest City) D4 Litang > Haizishan > Daocheng > Yading Village D5 Yading Scenic Area full day (free admission season) D6 Yading > Xiangcheng > Derong > Benzilan > Deqin D7 Deqin > Feilai Temple (Meili "Golden Mountain" at sunrise) > Yanjing D8 Yanjing > Markam > Zogang > Bangda > Basu D9 Basu > Ranwu Lake > Bomi > Lulang D10 Lulang > Nyingchi > Gongbo'gyamda > Lhasa This route takes a slight detour to Tagong and Meili compared to the standard one, but the density of scenery is doubled. · - 🍲 Local Cuisine Try the matsutake stone pot chicken in Xinduqiao—one pot costs around 120 and feeds 3 people. The yak meat chunks in Litang are prepared in a wild, authentic Tibetan style. At the Tibetan steamed bun shop in Zogang, they cost 5 each and are full of juice. Lulang's stone pot chicken is a signature dish, but prices rise during peak season to 60–80 per person. In Lhasa, visit the Canggu Temple Sweet Tea House on Barkhor Street; a cup of sweet tea is 3, Tibetan noodles are 15, and you can sit there all afternoon. · - Essential Tips👇 📌 Daocheng free admission period is Aug 1–Oct 31; book on the official platform 3 days in advance 📌 This route detours to Tagong Grassland + Meili Snow Mountain, doubling the scenery without adding much distance 📌 Don't wait to find accommodation upon arrival; prices increase by at least 30% on-site during peak season 📌 Lulang stone pot chicken prices increase during peak season; ask for the price before ordering 📌 For car rentals, find an established, qualified team. Legitimate travel agencies like Xizang Aoyou Travel offer transparent contracts without middleman markups Traveling the 318 doesn't have to cost that much; the key is to avoid the traps of information asymmetry. The 3 months of free admission in Daocheng are the perfect time to set off✨

Starting from Batang County, the road climbs north along Provincial Highway S459, and the scenery outside the car window begins to transform layer by layer. The winding mountain road snakes through valleys and primeval forests, the altitude gradually increasing, and the crisp scent of pine and cypress in the air becoming increasingly intense. Crossing the Zhawala Pass, mist-shrouded mountains unfold before us; at an altitude of 4920 meters, the snow-capped peaks of the Genie Mountains appear and disappear through gaps in the clouds. The journey then descends, and the highland scenery gradually unfolds—first, dark green coniferous forests, then expansive alpine meadows, dotted with cattle and sheep like scattered stars. Upon arriving at Gemu Village, the Dingqu River murmurs as it flows through the valley. Surrounded by high mountains, this narrow meadow is lush and green in summer, with wildflowers of various colors weaving a long carpet—white, yellow, purple—that stretches all the way to the edge of the dark green forest. Sturdy log cabins and black yak-hair tents are scattered amidst a sea of flowers, with the majestic Genie Mountains rising in the distance, their snow-capped peaks standing out against the blue sky. Herdsmen graze leisurely, yaks and horses grazing quietly, and occasionally Tibetan children frolic among the flowers. There is no clamor here, only the sounds of the wind, the water, and the distant strains of stringed instruments—like a secret paradise forgotten by time. I did the math. During the three months of free admission to Daocheng Yading, one person saves 270 yuan just on tickets. What does 270 yuan mean? Along the 318 route, it can buy four stone pot chicken meals, nine bowls of Litang yak meat soup, or thirty bowls of Barkhor Street Tibetan noodles. Don’t you think saving that money is great? I used to think free admission didn’t save much, but when you convert it into food, it really hits home. How much does it cost to travel 318 alone? When you exchange the saved ticket money for food, the value of this trip instantly goes up. · - 🏔 Attractions See all three sacred mountains of Daocheng Yading (free admission during the period, 146 + sightseeing bus 128, save 270). Hiking from Chonggu Temple to Pearl Lake takes 2 hours round trip, with colorful forests lining both sides in autumn. After Yading, visit Haizi Mountain Sister Lakes for free, just get off the car. The Maoya Grassland still has flowers in August, free entry. The Nujiang 72 Bends viewing platform is free and looks like a highway movie scene. The Ranwu Lake morning boardwalk is free, with only your reflection on the lake surface. The best scenery on the Sichuan-Tibet route is all along the way, without spending a dime. · - ⚠ Notes Daocheng Yading is free but requires booking 5 days in advance on the official mini program. Daily visitor limits apply. No reservation, no entry. The golden season in September and October has daytime temperatures around 20 degrees and below freezing at night. Layered clothing is most practical. Take Rhodiola a week in advance for altitude sickness. Don’t exceed 3,500m altitude for the first 3 nights. If traveling alone, send your location to family daily. Some areas have weak signal, so download offline maps before departure. · - 🚙 Vehicle options For 4-person carpool, Toyota Prado 3.5 is recommended. Peak season costs 700–900/day including fuel, driver meals, and lodging. Per person, 7,000–8,000 for the full trip. For 2–3 people, Tank 300 is a cost-effective choice at 500–600/day. For higher comfort, choose Land Cruiser at 1,000–1,200/day with good shock absorption on rough roads. I just returned from the Western Sichuan Grand Loop. The journey was so bumpy I felt like my bones were falling apart, but seeing those stunning landscapes made it all worth it. 📍Basic overview Western Sichuan is located on a plateau, featuring diverse topographies such as snow-capped mountains, glaciers, alpine lakes, forests, grasslands, and Tibetan villages. Some popular attractions require advance booking and have high altitudes. It's ideal for young people and families who enjoy outdoor scenery, photography, and experiencing Tibetan culture on a self-driving tour. 🗺️Travel route Chengdu > Kangding > Yuzi West > Xinduqiao > Tagong Grassland > Moshi Park > Danba Tibetan Village > Seda > Daocheng Yading > Cuopugou > Xiangcheng > Return Tip: Road conditions in Western Sichuan are complex, with many curves and significant altitude changes. Novice drivers should not push themselves; it's best to have multiple people take turns driving. ✨Key highlights The landscapes here are characterized by extreme contrasting beauty. You can stand on the desolate marmot viewing platform and gaze at the Gongga mountain range, or dive into Jiuzhaigou to see its colorful alpine lakes. Whether you want to take a set of exotic, otherworldly photos or experience the power of faith, Western Sichuan can perfectly arrange it for you. 🍜Local specialty foods In Kangding, you must try a bowl of yak meat hotpot; it's warming and filling. Near Xinduqiao or Tagong Grassland, find a restaurant and try Tibetan stone pot chicken; the chicken is tender, and the soup is fresh and delicious. If you pass through Xiangcheng, remember to buy some local qingke barley cakes for breakfast; with a hint of milky flavor, they get more fragrant the more you chew. 🏨Accommodation recommendations 1. Guesthouses near scenic areas: Yunman Mountain Residence in Xinduqiao (This guesthouse is right on the edge of town. You can see the golden sun shining on Gongga Mountain from your window. Waking up to the crisp, fresh air makes you feel completely refreshed.) 2. City hotels: Kangding Love Song Hotel (It's located in Kangding city, making it convenient to visit Paoma Mountain or stroll around Liuliu City. The rooms are well-equipped, and there's plenty of hot water, perfect for a good night's sleep before heading to the next attraction.) 🎒Essential travel items 1. Protection: High-SPF sunscreen, wide-brimmed sun hat, disposable raincoat 2. Small personal items: Large-capacity thermos, lip balm, sunglasses, magic headscarf 💡Practical tips 1. The temperature difference between morning and evening is very large. Even in summer, you need to bring a thick jacket; a shell jacket or a light down jacket is most practical. 2. Many beautiful sights in Western Sichuan are in high-altitude areas. Avoid strenuous exercise, move slowly, drink plenty of warm water, and prepare altitude sickness medication in advance. 3. If it's cloudy or rainy, you won't see much from viewing platforms like Yuzi West and Gedilamu. Be sure to check the weather forecast before you go. 4. When passing by temples and Tibetan villages, it's best to ask for local permission before taking photos and respect local customs. After this trip, I feel that the beauty of Western Sichuan is truly soul-stirring. The sound of the wind blowing through the prayer flags and that pure blue sky make you want to return again and again.

In the travel map of northwestern Yunnan, people are more familiar with Meili Snow Mountain, Yubeng, Feilai Temple, or the ancient Dukezong. I. Preface: Why Benzilan In the travel map of northwestern Yunnan, people are more familiar with Meili Snow Mountain, Yubeng, Feilai Temple, or Dukezong Ancient Town. Benzilan Town, however, is often just a passing point on the map. But if you truly turn the pages of Yunnan-Tibet transportation history, you will find: Benzilan has never been a mere transit point. It is a hub. Strategically located at the great bend of the Jinsha River, it is an important gateway from Yunnan into the Tibetan regions, a vital node on the Ancient Tea Horse Road, and a traffic hub where the Yunnan-Tibet and Sichuan-Tibet highways intersect. If snow-capped mountains represent faith, then Benzilan represents flow. If sacred mountains belong to the spiritual realm, then Benzilan belongs to the practical order. This is a small town defined by "passages." II. Geographical Layout: The Strategic Significance of the Jinsha River's Great Bend Benzilan Town is located in northwestern Yunnan, deep within the hinterland of the Hengduan Mountains. Here, the Jinsha River makes a massive curve amid north-south aligned mountain ranges, deep-cut river valleys, and complex terrains. In ancient times when transportation conditions were extremely arduous, any navigable river valley or mountain pass possessed immense strategic value. Benzilan sits exactly on such a natural passage. Heading north, one can enter the direction of Markam in Tibet. Heading south, one reaches Shangri-La and Lijiang. Westward, it leads to Deqin and the Meili Snow Mountain region. To the east, it connects with Xiangcheng and Daocheng in Sichuan. This means: It is not just the frontier of Yunnan. It is the connecting axis among Yunnan, Tibet, and Sichuan. Historically, whoever controls the passage controls the trade. Whoever controls the trade controls wealth and cultural dissemination. The geographic value of Benzilan dictated that it would never be just an ordinary village. III. Origin of the Name and Ethnic Integration Regarding the origin of the name "Benzilan," there are various accounts in academic circles and local oral traditions. One explanation suggests it is a transliteration of a Tibetan pronunciation, meaning "flat land" or "river valley pasture." Another theory is related to ancient tribal migrations, claiming it was named after a tribal chief who set up camp here. Regardless of the interpretation, both illustrate a long-standing historical background of multi-ethnic convergence involving Tibetans, Naxi, and Han people. Benzilan is not a settlement of a single ethnic group. It is a melting pot. Languages mix, clothing styles influence each other, and religions coexist. This integration has forged Benzilan's unique cultural temperament— It embodies both the ruggedness and solemn faith of the Tibetan areas. And the flexibility and pragmatism of western Yunnan's mercantile culture. IV. The Ancient Tea Horse Road: Years in the Sound of Caravan Bells During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the Ancient Tea Horse Road became one of the most important trade routes in the southwest region. Yunnan produced Pu'er tea, which was transported north into Tibetan regions by mule caravans in exchange for warhorses and medicinal herbs. Benzilan was situated on the main trunk of the Yunnan-Tibet Tea Horse Road. Caravans set off from Lijiang, passed through Shangri-La to arrive at Benzilan, and then continued north into Markam. In that era without highways, caravans were the only reliable mode of transportation. A single merchant fleet could easily consist of dozens of mules and horses. Along the way, they crossed snow-capped mountains and forded rivers. Thanks to its relatively open terrain and abundant water supply, Benzilan became a crucial resting place. Merchant fleets replenished their rations and fodder here. Monks chanted sutras and preached here. Villagers and foreign merchants exchanged goods. Tea, salt, furs, and fabrics circulated in this very spot. This was not only an exchange of materials. It was also a spread of culture. V. Religious Landscape: Temples and Belief Structures Multiple Tibetan Buddhist temples are scattered around Benzilan. Monasteries have historically assumed educational and social organization functions alongside their religious roles. The Gelug sect has a wide presence here. On major festivals, surrounding villagers flock to the temples to participate in dharma assemblies. Prayer wheels and prayer flags are ubiquitous across the valley. Religious beliefs are deeply intertwined with daily life. Praying for blessings before farming. Making wishes before herding. Inviting monks to chant sutras when encountering major events. In such a cultural structure, religion is not an abstract theory. It is an integral part of the life order. VI. The Yunnan-Tibet Highway Era: Modern Transition Entering the 20th century, the Yunnan-Tibet Highway was opened. Benzilan's status as a transportation hub was reinforced once again. During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the Yunnan-Tibet line served as a vital material corridor. Vast quantities of supplies were transported through here to the frontlines. The advent of highways led to the gradual decline of caravans. Trucks replaced mules and horses. Speed replaced endurance. Benzilan gradually transitioned from a waystation town to a highway town. Inns, restaurants, and auto repair shops began to emerge. The commercial landscape underwent a transformation. VII. Architectural Style: The Structural Aesthetics of Highland Dwellings Traditional dwellings in Benzilan are primarily constructed with stone and wood. Thick walls, small windows, and flat roofs. These are adaptations to the highland climate with its stark temperature differences between day and night. Some buildings incorporate elements of Han-style courtyards. Creating a unique frontier architectural aesthetic. Walls are mostly built with stacked stones, offering strong wind resistance. Roofs can be used to sun-dry highland barley and corn. Courtyards serve both residential and agricultural functions. VIII. Benzilan in the Context of Modern Tourism As tourist routes in northwestern Yunnan mature, Benzilan has become an essential supply stop for road trips and cycling. The Jinsha River Great Bend observation deck attracts photography enthusiasts. The highland canyon scenery is magnificent. However, Benzilan's core charm lies not in any single attraction. But in its "transitional nature." It bridges snow-capped mountains and rivers. It connects Yunnan and Tibet. It links tradition with modernity. IX. The Great Bend of the Jinsha River: Intersection of Nature and History Near Benzilan, the Jinsha River executes a spectacular turn. The river meanders between soaring alpine peaks. Forming a visually striking landscape. Ancient merchants traveled along the river. Modern highways cling to the mountainsides. No matter how times change, this river remains an ever-present lifeline of transportation. Its waters witnessed the caravan era. And now, they witness convoys of road-trippers. X. Cultural Character: Openness and Resilience of the Frontier Serving as a transportation hub for so long, Benzilan has developed an open mindset. It does not alienate outsiders. Yet it steadfastly preserves the core of its indigenous culture. Surviving in a frontier environment means one must be resilient. The highland climate is unforgiving. Land resources are limited. People have learned moderation and mutual assistance. This character is also reflected in how locals treat their guests. Honest, direct, and unpretentious. XI. Festivals and Folklore During the Tibetan New Year, the town is bustling with a vibrant atmosphere. Family sacrifices, Wei Sang (burning pine branches) for blessings, and horse racing events. Traditional singing and dancing unfold in the squares. Festivals are more than just entertainment. They are the reaffirmation of ethnic identity. XII. Contemporary Challenges: Balancing Ecology and Development Convenient transportation brings developmental opportunities. But it also introduces environmental pressures. How can the canyon ecology be protected amidst growing tourism? How can over-commercialization be avoided? These are the questions Benzilan must face in the future. XIII. Travel Recommendations (In-depth Route) Head to the Jinsha River observation deck early in the morning to capture the sunrise. Stroll through the old streets and observe the details of traditional dwellings. Chat with local residents to uncover the stories of the Ancient Tea Horse Road. Combine this with surrounding snow mountain routes for a two-day stay, rather than just hurrying past. XIV. The Significance of Benzilan In the eyes of many travelers, it is merely a supply station. But from a historical perspective, it is a crucial node at the junction of Yunnan and Tibet. It bears witness to mobility. And to transformation. It is unboastful. Yet profound. Conclusion: The Overlooked Hub True travel is not just about rushing to a destination. It also involves understanding the places that connect to it. Benzilan Town is exactly such an existence. It shows us that: Beyond the snow-capped mountains and outside the myths, there lies a transportation history of the real world. The next time you pass through here, you might as well stay for a night. Listen to the wind and watch the river. Perhaps you will discover— The true northwestern Yunnan does not only reside on the high peaks. It also flows between the river valleys.

Xiangcheng is a "white holy land" situated at the crossroads of Sichuan, Yunnan, and Tibet. "Ranwu Baige" in Ranwu Village is a dining bar renovated from a traditional white Tibetan house (with white mud walls). From its third-floor rooftop, you can take in a sweeping view of the entire village's cluster of white Tibetan houses and the Maitreya Buddha Hall. Before the match begins, snap some photos at the rooftop's scenic spot, take a stroll around the Tang Mandala corridor to offer a prayer, and then head downstairs to watch the live broadcast. During the France match I watched there, the owner poured me some alpine butter tea and said, "Our walls are pure white without any paint. Football should also be watched with a pure heart." I highly recommend this place for its perfect blend of Tibetan white architectural aesthetics and the World Cup atmosphere. Watching the game against the backdrop of pristine white walls makes the experience feel incredibly pure. Take a bus from Daocheng to Xiangcheng (2 hours). You can stay at one of the cozy B&Bs right in Ranwu Village.

Hongyan Bihui: The Sacred Secret of Sichuan-Yunnan-Tibet Ladies, listen up! If your impression of Western Sichuan is still stuck on the crowds at Daocheng Yading, then you’re really missing out! This time, I’ve uncovered a “legendary” road hidden at the junction of Sichuan, Yunnan, and Tibet, secretly cherished by veteran self-driving travelers—the Maowu Grand Canyon. This is the “Yunnan-Sichuan Passage” from Shangri-La to Daocheng Yading. On one side, there’s a thousand-meter-high crimson cliff; on the other, the jade-green Shuoq Qu River. Driving through it, you’d think you’ve entered the Mines of Moria from The Lord of the Rings. The best part? The entire route from Shangri-La is paved, so sedans have no problem, and there are so few tourists you can enjoy the whole canyon to yourself. In May and June, the river is as blue as jelly! 🏔️ 1. Why is Maowu Grand Canyon called the “Most Beautiful Rift on Earth”? Red Rocks and Clear Waters, an 8-Million-Year-Old “Earth Fissure” Sculpted by Time Maowu Grand Canyon is located in the southern part of Derong County, Ganzi, Sichuan. It was formed by the uplift from the Himalayan tectonic movement 8 million years ago combined with the downcutting of the Shuoq Qu River. The canyon’s red-brown cliffs rise steeply like blades, with vertical drops of 800-1200 meters, featuring terraced walls and mysterious peaks. The exposed rock layers are mainly Triassic metamorphic sandstone, glowing like flames under the sun—one visitor said, “The red rocks make the canyon’s sky an incredibly pure blue, and the wide, calm river at the bottom is a soft green so deep it seems bottomless, like a heavenly spring quietly flowing.” An 18-kilometer pristine canyon, “canyon within canyon, ravine within ravine” The core area of the canyon covers about 18 kilometers of river from Maowu Village to Xiayong Village. The upper riverbed is 80-150 meters wide with calm, mirror-like water; the lower river narrows sharply to 30-50 meters, where rapids create wild waves and spectacular scenes. “One-line sky” views are everywhere, along with geological wonders like Antelope Leap Gorge, Flame Wall, and Twin Stone Gates. Because it preserves the most original canyon landscape, it’s called the “most pristine canyon” among Derong’s canyons. High Gorge and Flat Lake, a “Dynamic and Static Duet” of Clear Water and Danxia Cliffs This area was originally the site of the Xue Hydropower Station reservoir. The once steep canyon became a stunning high gorge flat lake after the reservoir filled. The green lake water contrasts beautifully with the red Danxia cliffs, combining nature’s ruggedness with serene beauty. In the dry season of May and June, the river water is at its clearest, and at noon on sunny days, the red rocks and green water colors are at their most vivid. The Great Bend of the Jinsha River: A “God’s Eye View” from the Cliff In the middle of the canyon, there’s a viewing platform overlooking the magnificent Ω-shaped great bend of the Jinsha River. Standing on the cliff edge, you see the rushing Jinsha River below, endless mountain ranges in the distance, and prayer flags fluttering in the wind—every shot looks like a National Geographic cover. ⚠️ The viewing platform’s railings have large gaps, so be careful if you’re with kids! 2.
