Jiulongtan The paths in Jiulongtan are divided into two loops: a small loop and a large loop. The small loop is carefully maintained by the scenic area, with clear pond water, gentle stone paths, and shade from trees all along the way. The kids skipped stones by the pond and watched little fish swim by, slowing their steps. The charm here lies in the “shallowness” — you don’t have to go deep to enjoy the mountain and water scenery. The large loop is wilder, with steeper paths and fewer people, meant for those willing to walk a bit more. We combined both loops, which took about three hours. We worked up a sweat, but felt refreshed inside. 2. Qingsongling Saiwai Jiangnan Water Town This water town is man-made, with green tiles, white walls, small bridges, and flowing water, deliberately imitating the style of Jiangnan. Nearby is a health resort community, known as the “Beijing 7th Ring Health Resort,” which attracts many visitors on weekends. Shops, hotels, and performances are all available. Although artificially created, it still has its own charm. I prefer to spend a night in such a place. After the daytime bustle fades, the water town becomes quiet at night. The inn’s rooms are clean, the beds comfortable, and it’s very quiet at night. In the early morning, running a few kilometers through the water town, the air is filled with the scent of grass and trees, and you feel lighter. 3. Additional Thoughts This trip had no special plans, just a desire to escape the city heat. The water of Jiulongtan and the nights at Qingsongling both make you feel that summer can also be cool.

Jizhen was divided into three divisions, each with four routes: the East Division included Shanhaiguan, Jianchang Camp, Yanhe Camp, and Gumenzikou; the Central Division included Xifengkou, Songpeng, Taiping Fort, and Malanyu; the West Division, centered on Shixia, was divided into four routes: Gubeikou, Qiangzi Road, Caojialu, and Shitanglu. This is why Qiangziling was renamed Qiangzi Road, and Qiangziling Pass was named Qiangzi Xiongguan. Qiangzi Road is located at the junction of Miyun, Xinglong in Hebei, and Pinggu in Beijing. The mountain roads are rugged and the terrain is perilous. It is a key transportation route for entering the pass from the northeast and a necessary path to the eastern Hebei Plain. At the entrance, two mountain peaks face each other, the road is narrow and sparsely traveled, with high mountains and narrow valleys, making it a historically strategic military site. During the Ming Dynasty, it mainly defended against Mongol forces. Therefore, when building the Great Wall, Qiangzi Road was an extremely important pass and became one of the four routes of Shixia. The Qiangzi Road garrison city was first built during the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty, with a city perimeter of over 850 meters. It had three gates: East, West, and South. The East gate was called Yongxi Gate, the West gate Anbian Gate, and the South gate Qiangzi Road Gate. The entire city was constructed of brick and stone, with a foundation of stone slabs and walls made of bricks. The walls were about 2 zhang 5 chi (approximately 8.3 feet) high and about 2 zhang (approximately 6.6 feet) wide. The city was rectangular, with the northern wall following the mountain’s curve in a semicircle. The city tower was made of brick and stone, extremely sturdy. North of the pass was a cliff with a city wall over a li (about 0.3 miles) long built on top. Two li in front of the pass, a beacon tower was built on the mountaintop, from which enemies could be seen dozens of li away. At the first sign of enemy activity, smoke signals were immediately lit to send alerts. The city was rebuilt in the 3rd year of Wanli, and on the South gate tower hung a white marble plaque with four large characters: “Qiangzi Xiongguan.” The inscription above read: “Erected on an auspicious day in mid-spring of the Yi Hai year, 3rd year of Wanli of the Great Ming.” The inscription below read: “By Imperial Commissioner and Governor of Military Affairs of Jiliao and other regions, Vice Minister of War Guan Zhong Yang Zhaoshu.” Under the blue sky and bright sun, the four characters “Qiangzi Xiongguan” are bold and vigorous, perfectly blending with the towering and majestic pass that reaches the clouds, creating a magnificent and grand sight. Climbing Qiangzi Xiongguan and looking north, the majestic “V”-shaped Great Wall stretches across these mountains, inspiring awe and pride.

You won’t want to leave the room at all. This place is perfect for a family weekend getaway! The park has many supporting facilities; kids can play endlessly at the Star Club and Ice and Snow Park. Adults can work out, read, soak in hot springs, or take walks… There are plenty of dining options too. The First Community Canteen offers great value, and you can also try Liudao Pot Hotpot. It’s just a 1-hour drive from Wangjing, Beijing, and only 37 minutes by high-speed train to Xinglong West Station.
