Zongta Seven-Color Flower Sea: A Free Hidden Gem
Ganzi Zongta Grassland | The "Seven-Color Flower Sea" where the gods spilled their palette: A guide to this free, hidden gem
If you are tired of grasslands over-edited with influencer filters, Zongta might make you believe again—some places are truly a romance naturally grown by the earth.
I encountered it in the northeast corner of Luhuo, Ganzi. Locals say this grassland "changes its clothes" four times a year: first, it is covered in a golden velvet carpet, then it changes into a snow-white sea of flowers, followed by pink waves, and finally, it turns into a purple dreamscape. Seven colors of wildflowers take turns appearing, each with a blooming period of about 25 days, which is why it has a beautiful name—Seven-Color Grassland, also known as the "rainbow that fell to earth."
1. What is Zongta Grassland?
Zongta Grassland is located in the northeast of Luhuo County, Ganzi Prefecture, Sichuan Province, in the upper reaches of the Dadu River. It is about 60 km from Luhuo County town, at an altitude of about 3,700 m. It is not the kind of "endless" giant grassland, but a basin meadow surrounded by gentle slopes, with the Kangqu Hushi Sacred Mountain resting quietly in the center.
The most special thing is the flowers. Starting from early June each year, wildflowers bloom in the order of red, white, yellow, purple, and purplish-red. Each color has a blooming period of about 25 days, lasting until around the Mid-Autumn Festival. In other words, if you go at different times, you will see completely different colors. If you go in mid-July, it might be a mix of yellow and white; if you go in early August, pink will be everywhere.
Quick facts:
· Admission: Free, open all day, no entrance gate
· Recommended stay: About 3 hours (but it is easy to stay for a whole day)
· Altitude: About 3,700 m, low risk of altitude sickness (relative to other areas at the same altitude)
2. How to get there?
Self-drive (recommended)
Zongta Grassland is hidden next to National Highway G227. There are two classic routes from Chengdu:
Route A (via G227): Chengdu → Ya'an → Kangding → Daofu → Luhuo → Zongta, about 601 km in total. This route travels through the Ganzi section of G227, connecting Luhuo, Ganzi, Xinlong, Litang, and Daocheng along the way. With snow-capped mountains, grasslands, and lakes unfolding, it is a visual feast in itself.
Route B (via G317 + county road): Chengdu → Ma'erkang → Guanyinqiao → Zongta. Turning into Zongta Grassland from Guanyinqiao Town, the grassland scenery is particularly good, and the view opens up immediately. However, there are some narrow sections on the road where passing other vehicles is difficult, so beginners should be cautious.
Public transport
Take a bus from Kangding to Luhuo County, with a ticket price of about 85 yuan/person, and the journey takes about 7 hours. After arriving in Luhuo County, charter a car or carpool to the grassland. Round-trip carpooling is about 50 yuan/person.
⚠️ Mobile signal is very weak at Zongta Grassland, so be sure to download offline maps before you set off.
3. What to do there?
1. Stroll through the flower sea and watch yaks cross the river
The grassland has no fences, no shops, and no "tourist attraction" feel. You can walk slowly along the pasture paths, watch herds of yaks wade across the stream, and see marmots poking their heads out of their holes. It is recommended to arrive after 3:30 PM. When the sunset dyes the flower sea, every photo looks like a Windows desktop background.
2. Horse riding, milking yaks, and making butter tea
At Zongta Seven-Color Grassland Ecological Resort, you can experience a full nomadic life: horse riding, milking yaks, making butter tea, wearing traditional nomadic clothing, and dancing Tibetan dances. The herdsmen will naturally invite you to drink a bowl of freshly made hot butter tea, with a rich, creamy aroma that melts in your mouth.
3. Stay in a starry tent and look up at the Milky Way
The resort has 360-degree panoramic grassland viewing tents, equipped with TVs, air conditioning, showers, and Wi-Fi. The conditions are much better than you might imagine. Lying in the tent at night, the stars are so close you feel like you could pick them.
4. Soak in the Alagou Hot Spring
Not far from the grassland is the Alagou Hot Spring. The hot spring pools are naturally formed, and the water inlets and drainage holes are primitive, natural structures. Soaking in the pool, surrounded by the wilderness and wind of the plateau, all fatigue just melts away.
5. Catch the horse racing festival in July
Every year in early July, Zongta Grassland hosts a grand horse racing festival that lasts for 7 to 9 days. The hundred-horse and hundred-yak formations are magnificent, and there are also cultural performances, prayer ceremonies, and sports competitions. The spirit of the Khampa men is fully displayed at this moment. If your schedule aligns, be sure to add it to your itinerary.
4. What to eat?
In this purely pastoral township, you must eat the most authentic Tibetan food. Here are a few must-try dishes:
· Original yak meat: The simplest way of cooking, the meat itself is fresh enough
· Yak meat pie: Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, you won't be able to stop after one bite
· Wild mushroom stewed beef: The freshness of plateau mushrooms is a perfect match for yak meat
· Butter tea: Salty and rich, warming to the stomach
· Yak yogurt: Remember to add plenty of white sugar
5. Where to stay?
Top choice: Grassland starry tent
The experience is fully immersive—watch the stars at night and be woken up by the sound of yaks in the morning. The facilities are complete, suitable for travelers who value the experience.
Alternative: Hotels/homestays in Luhuo County
Accommodation in the county town costs 80–130 yuan/night, which is warmer than the grassland, and it is within a 10-minute walk to Shouling Temple. If you are worried about altitude sickness or the cold, staying in the county town is a safer bet.
6. How to connect with surrounding areas?
Zongta Grassland itself can be fully enjoyed in half a day to a day, but there are many other places worth visiting in the surrounding Luhuo and Ganzi areas. It is recommended to arrange a 3-day, 2-night itinerary:
Day 1: Slow stroll in Luhuo County
Shouling Temple is built against the mountain, and the red walls and golden roofs are stunning in the sunlight. In the evening, climb up to the hillside viewing platform to overlook the whole small town, with the Xianshui River winding through it. At that moment, all your worries will be forgotten.
Day 2: Roam in Zongta Grassland
Walk in the flower sea during the day, go horse riding and drink butter tea in the afternoon, and stay in a starry tent at night. You don't need any plans for this day; just follow the rhythm of the grassland.
Day 3: Pilgrimage to Kasa Lake
Kasa Lake is a sacred lake in the hearts of Tibetan people. The lake water changes color with the light, and the lakeside is piled with Mani stones for prayer. Sitting here and zoning out for half an hour, it feels like the whole world has been swallowed by the lake water.
If you have enough time, you can continue along G227 towards Ganzi; the Gesar King City and Danxia Town are also on this route.
7. Practical tips
🌡️ The temperature difference is real: It is about 25°C during the day in Luhuo, but it may be only 7°C in the morning and evening. Bring a windbreaker with a fleece liner and use the "onion-style layering method"—take it off when it is hot, put it on when it is cold.
🧴 Don't be lazy with sun protection: The plateau UV rays are no joke. The three-piece set of SPF50+ sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat is essential. Reapply every 2 hours.
💊 Altitude sickness prevention: Although 3,700 m is not extremely high, take it easy on the first day and don't jump around too much. Prepare Rhodiola oral liquid and portable glucose powder in advance. After arriving, don't wash your hair, don't take a shower, and don't drink alcohol.
🙏 Respect local customs: Walk clockwise when entering temples, do not photograph monks, do not drive over the grassland, and do not pick wildflowers.
📵 Signal reminder: Mobile signal on the grassland is extremely weak. Download offline maps in advance and inform your family of your itinerary.
Zongta Grassland is not a "check-in" style attraction. It has no entrance gate, no ticket office, and no commercial street. All it has is flowers, yaks, herdsmen, and the wind.
The best season is from June to September, when the flower sea and temperature are just right. Bring offline maps, a windbreaker, and a relaxed heart, and just go.
