Visiting in August and September is just right, and keeping your budget under 1,000 yuan per person is totally doable. 01 Dongying | Shandong 📍 Yellow River Estuary Ecotourism Area. I remember the ticket plus sightseeing bus cost about 70 to 80 yuan, with a student discount available. The best time here is at dusk. ⏰ Enter after 4:30 PM when the light changes from harsh white to warm yellow. The wetland reeds turn golden, looking ten times better than at noon. Don’t take the electric cart right away. Walk along the boardwalk for 20 minutes first. Below are mudflats, above are water birds. To save money, walk the trail outside Wenchang Pavilion to see the scenery. Qiantong Ancient Town ticket is 60 yuan. It’s much quieter than Wuzhen or Xitang. At night, red lanterns light the cobblestone streets. Almost no one is around, making it perfect for an overnight stay. Guesthouses cost about 120 yuan, and breakfast of tofu pudding and two wheat cakes is only 8 yuan. ⚠️ Ignore the “guides” at the town entrance. You can explore on your own. 08 Xianyang | Shaanxi Xianyang is just 20 minutes by high-speed train from Xi’an, but prices are twice as high. Qianling Mausoleum ticket is 100 yuan. It’s the joint tomb of Tang Emperor Gaozong and Empress Wu Zetian. The stone lions on the sacred way and the Shusheng Stele are originals. ⏰ Arrive at 8:30 AM when it opens. The low-angle light on the stone lions makes the textures especially vivid. ⚠️ “Wild guides” outside the park will pester you with Wu Zetian’s secret stories and then ask for 50 yuan. Don’t engage. Yuanjia Village Guanzhong Impression Experience Area is free. It’s a half-hour taxi ride from Qianling.
