[Yamagata] Historical buildings to learn about✨
100 Great Castles in Japan [Yamagata Castle Ruins]
Well maintained, the ruins of the Honmaru Palace are located within the large grounds, and the restored Ninomaru moat and stone walls can be seen beautifully✨
It is a historical building where you can learn, with VR explanations and a museum.
The Yamagata Prefectural Museum displays the national treasure "Jomon Goddess"⭐️
When I went in the summer, the inside of the museum was too hot to take my time looking around, so I recommend bringing cooling items such as a fan during the scorching heat💡
You can walk there from Yamagata Station.

Experiencing Snow at Zao
Experiencing snow at Zao is an exciting and enchanting natural experience, especially during the winter season when the entire area is covered in snow. Zao is a famous tourist destination in Japan for skiing and enjoying beautiful snow views.
When you arrive at Zao, you will be greeted with stunning scenery, where the falling snow makes everything look white and like a fairy tale world.
Taking the cable car to the top of the mountain allows you to enjoy a wide view, seeing mountains and snow covering the entire area. Additionally, there are walking trails for those who want to enjoy the view up close. You can stroll in the cool atmosphere and feel the tranquility of nature.
For ski lovers, Zao also has ski slopes suitable for all levels, from beginners to professionals, and is fully equipped with facilities, making it an ideal place for relaxation and fun during the winter season.
Playing in the snow? Consider Tohoku Zao in Japan.
I really miss the first time I went to Japan to play in the snow. It was so much fun and incredibly beautiful and romantic. Although it was a warm winter that year, I have vivid memories of staying one night at Zao in Yamagata, Tohoku. It started snowing heavily at midnight and continued throughout the night. The next day, we went up the mountain and stayed at the San-Goro Lodge halfway up. The heavy snow continued, and the kids played in the snow all day, not wanting to come inside. They only agreed to leave after we checked out. After leaving, we were incredibly lucky to see the sun come out, giving us a chance to see the beautiful forest. It was like a scene from Frozen, so dreamy!
The staff at San-Goro Lodge took us to the Torikabuto Station cable car. This is a ski resort with many skiers. We walked along the path to the Daikokuten Observatory, which was incredibly beautiful. The view from the 1387-meter-high Torikabuto summit was stunning. From there, we could see our lodge, San-Goro Lodge. The wooden cabin in the snow was so romantic, and walking through the forest felt like a scene from Frozen.

During the autumn leaves season ☘️☘️ in Yamagata, even though there are no cherry blossoms to see 🌸🌸🌸 Japan, we had the opportunity to go in November during the beautiful autumn leaves season. On the way to Ginzan Onsen, while driving on both sides of the road, the way to the valley, most of the tourists are Japanese because the way to get there is quite difficult. There are also tour buses. Stop to eat handmade soba, then soak in the onsen ♨️ feels good. #Sakura2024
Japan> Zao Ice Tree in Yamagata, Skiing Guide
📍>
The Zao Range (ざおうれんぽう) is majestic, spanning Yamagata and Miyagi counties, with the main peak Kumano-dake (elevation 1,841 meters) located on the Yamagata side. Beautiful scenery can be seen all year round, especially the autumn red leaves on the mountain top and the 'Zao Ice Tree' of Zao Mountain in northeastern Yamagata, which is one of the absolute winter views in Japan.
.
💠During the entire ski season, the 'Ice Tree Group' appearing on the upper part of the ski resort is very spectacular. In addition to being able to ski on the 'Ice Tree Primitive Snow Road' during the day and admire the ice trees on both sides of the ski trail, there is also an ice tree light show at night. Under the colorful lights, the ice trees look spectacular and mysterious. With 26 snow trails and 41 ropeways, no matter how big the scale is, it's impossible to ski all in one day, so it's recommended to stay at least one night.
.
💠How to get there:
Snow friends, you can choose Air China's direct flight to Sendai, with one flight each on Wednesday and Sunday, with a stopover in Shanghai.
The direct flight on Wednesday and Sunday, the departure time from Beijing is 7:20, and the departure time after stopping in Shanghai is 10:40. Arrive at Sendai Airport at 14:25 Japanese time.
.
The general route is: take the 'Sendai Airport Line' from Sendai Airport, and arrive at 'Sendai Station' 25 minutes later; change to the 'JR Senzan Line' at 'Sendai Station', and arrive at 'Yamagata Station' about 1 hour and 15 minutes later.
.
💠From Sendai Airport to Yamagata Station, there is another mode of transportation, called the express bus, with a one-way fare of 1,500 yen, half price for children under 12, and it takes 80 minutes to reach Yamagata Station. However, if you take a plane from Beijing with a stopover in Shanghai, you won't be able to catch the departure time of the express bus. Unless some snow friends fly to Sendai Airport from an airport in Japan, see if the arrival time can catch up with one of the four express buses a day. Snow friends, please check the arrival time on the day and decide whether to choose the express bus.
.
💠Take the Shinkansen from Tokyo
After snow friends land at Tokyo Haneda or Narita Airport, take a car to 'Tokyo Station' and take the Tohoku Shinkansen, a one-stop service to 'Yamagata Station', and then take a bus from 'Yamagata Station' to the ski resort.
The one-way fare for the Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Yamagata Station: 11,680 yen (about 680 RMB)
The Shinkansen journey time: 2 hours 41 minutes
When you arrive at 'Yamagata Station', refer to the above 'Yamagata Station → Zao Onsen' bus timetable and take the bus to go.
.

Yama-dera (山寺, lit. "Mountain Temple"), (山号 宝珠山; Sangō Hōshu-zan) is the popular name for the Buddhist temple of Risshaku-ji (立石寺) located northeast of Yamagata City, in Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. Its main image is a hibutsu statue of Yakushi Nyōrai. The temple has been a place for pilgrimage for centuries, and is designated as both a Place of Scenic Beauty and as a National Historic Site[1] It is located within the borders of the Zaō Quasi-National Park. The temple buildings clinging to the steep, forested, rocky hillsides are picturesque and unusual.
Snow Monsters
A snowboarders and skiers’ haven, Zao Onsen in Yamagata is famous for “snow monsters” as the trees turn into huge monster-like shapes during deep winter.
We initially planned to snowboard here but couldn’t as I was still healing from my knee injury. So, we decided to take the ropeway to the top for the night illumination, buuuuut it was -10C, we were underdressed, and the strong gusts of wind were unbearable.
There are many hot springs around the town, and without a doubt, we submerged ourselves in one of the delightful outdoor onsens.
Urrrrgh! I’ll definitely come back ❄️❤️

Summer at Zao Ski Resort Onsen
Traveling by bus from sendai station and stop at the Sakuramboekimae , take around 1 hour 20 minutes. Then travel by car to Zao ski resort with some friends.
we are doing BBQ party at the noon at the terrace of the forest inn Zao.
Talking and drink till drop, having a fun game and it was so memorable.
We do visit the the other lodge behind the mountain and using the cable car.
it was very convenient and the view was amazing, greenery's scenery from the cable car along the 1000m length, I was enjoyed alot. #staycation #summervacation #summer #japan #yamagata #onsen
Yamagata has many private hot spring hotels. It's hard to book Ryokan Azumaya because it has shuttle bus to pick up guests. Here are seven pools and four hot springs. They are available for male and female guests at different time. There is Takimikan and five open-air plunge baths of "根っこ風呂" that cut through the root of chestnut trees of 250 years old.
My friend Miyuki Sato just send me her hiking pictures. It was taken from the top of mountain in Yamagata prefecture on early Oct. The view is very stunning! Fantastic! 😍😍😍 We met last 2 years whenever I was visiting Zao onsen during my winter trip to Japan. She advises me to visit Yamagata in Autumn and so will guide me there. I can't wait shall my luck come true.

Okama Crater (Okama Crater) Mt.Zao #Tohoku
Hi !!! 🤗
Let's share the experience of traveling to Okama Crater on a budget to be a guideline for everyone.
1. Access: From Kaminoyama Onsen Station, there will be a free shuttle bus (few buses, 2 trips there / 2 trips back). The bus stops in front of Kaminoyama Onsen Tourist Information (while waiting for the bus, the staff will give out a 500¥ Chair Lift discount coupon).
2. We traveled on November 1, 67. The Okama crater was quite windy and very cold (opening period: late April - early November).
Yamadera Temple (Yamagata Prefecture)
#japantrip
Yamadera, or "Mountain Temple," is a historic site perched on a mountainside in Yamagata Prefecture. To reach the temple's main halls, visitors climb over 1,000 stone steps, passing through dense forests and encountering ancient statues and small shrines along the way. The journey is as rewarding as the destination, offering moments of quiet reflection amidst nature.
At the top, the panoramic views of the valley and surrounding mountains are breathtaking, especially during autumn when the foliage transforms into vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow. The temple’s most famous structure, Risshaku-ji, dates back over 1,000 years and is a spiritual haven for pilgrims and travelers alike.
Yamadera is easily accessible by train, making it a perfect day trip from Yamagata City or Sendai. The area around the temple is also dotted with quaint shops and cafes, offering local specialties and refreshments. Yamadera combines physical activity, spiritual enrichment, and natural beauty, creating an unforgettable experience.

Let's go meet the snow monsters!
Zao Onsen Ski Resort, Yamagata Prefecture
Red miso ramen from Yamagata Prefecture is also recommended 🍜
The recommended time is from the end of January to mid-February
Outside of this time, there may be less snow, it may be melting, or the frost may not remain clean.
Last year was a warm winter, and it seemed like a lot of snow had melted in March.
There are slightly more skiers than snowboarders, but if you are a snowboarder who can ski to a certain extent, you can enjoy this mountain without any difficulty.
The snow monsters are also shrinking year by year due to the effects of pests and global warming.
We recommend visiting at least once while you can still see the beautiful frost trees!

I love Shanxing Nuanshe Homestay.
Shanxing Nuanshe Homestay
A lovely homestay run by a young couple 🥰
We booked a Japanese-style suite, which was just right for four adults and one child. The bed was large 🛏️
The transportation was convenient, and it was easy to get to the scenic area and the county. The price was affordable. It was easy to find. There was also parking at the entrance. 🚘
The host was very friendly, and the breakfast was hearty. We sang karaoke 🎵 on the first night and borrowed the washing machine on the second day, all for free. We brought our own bottled water, but we didn't use it at all. We were provided with four bottles of water when we checked in, and there was a water dispenser at the stairway. When we left, the host thoughtfully gave each of us a bottle of water for the road. 🍶
We could order barbecue 🍖 and reservoir fish 🐟 from the host one day in advance, and the price was affordable. Overall, it was a very satisfying stay. 👍

The other day, I took a trip to Yamagata Prefecture in autumn.
I walked around Kasumigaoka Park and around Yamagata Station. The weather was nice, and it was a day when museums were free to enter, so I was able to see a lot by myself without spending a lot of money. I enjoyed Yamagata Prefecture by looking at the beautiful chrysanthemum flowers, visiting the museum and castle ruins. I also bought a Yonezawa beef burdock roll and a potato stew set. I sent it by courier on the spot. I also ate my fill of potato stew, local chicken, tadacha beans, cherries, and other fruits while I was there 😆 The most delicious thing was the rice. I had a lot of Yukiwakamaru and Yatsuyahime, and ate a lot. Yamagata is the best 📍 Location: Yamagata Station, Yamagata Prefecture

I booked this hotel because I was attracted by the milky white sulphur spring, which is said to be a hot spring that makes you beautiful, and the 100% natural flow of the spring water.
When I parked my car in the parking lot, the hot spring flowing into the Yokomizo gave off a strong smell of sulphur 😊
The lady at the front desk explained everything to me and showed me to my room.
She was very kind and easy to understand.

The other inn is the Zao International Hotel
The oldest and most historic hot spring resort in Yamagata Prefecture
The open-air rock bath "Yaemon no Yu" with its wooden observation bath and skillfully arranged rocks was something I had always wanted to experience.
The foot bath in front of the hot spring entrance is milky white, and there are three benches for four people. Towels for wiping your feet after bathing are also provided.
You can go out to the terrace through the wooden sliding door, and feel the refreshing breeze.
Finally, we went to the hot springs at Omiya Ryokan...
The men's and women's baths are switched at certain times.
To enjoy both, we recommend taking a bath once before dinner and then after.
One is a square bath with a bubble bath and a hot spring bath, and an open-air bath
The other is an egg-shaped bath that is also shown in the advertisements. It is a comfortable temperature with hot spring water flowing directly from the source.
In addition to touring the three inns, you can also enjoy three nearby public baths for free.
After exploring the whole facility, I thought that the temperature was just right for a comfortable bath and that it made my skin very smooth. One thing to be careful of. Be sure to take off your rings and necklaces before bathing. The spring water is prone to rusting, so... Meals Dinner was a delicious meal made with locally produced ingredients, including Yamagata beef. When making a reservation, you can choose from teppanyaki, sukiyaki, or shabu-shabu for the Yamagata beef. This time of year, it is steamed with wild vegetables and Yamagata's brand pork, Komen no Musumebuta. The rice was "Tsuyahime" and, of course, the sake I chose was "Dewazakura." The hall staff were also very kind and polite, and after taking a bath and sweating a lot, they filled my hungry stomach. 🥰 Breakfast was also very delicious, with dishes such as country-style stewed wild vegetables, teppanyaki, and dishes made with Shonai-produced roast pork and local vegetables. #AccommodationTrip

Breathtaking Views from Yamadera, Yamagata's Proud Tourist Spot
I finally visited Yamadera, a place in Yamagata Prefecture that I've wanted to go to since I was a child. The view from Yamadera, one of Yamagata's proudest tourist spots, was breathtaking.✨
The official name of Yamadera is Hojusan Risshakuji Temple.
It is one of the most famous temples in Yamagata Prefecture and is also known as a scenic spot. It gets extremely crowded during the warm seasons!
Climbing the 1,015 stone steps from the trailhead feels more like a mini-hike than a pilgrimage. In winter, you'll need to prepare for snow and cold weather.⛄️
The estimated time for a round trip is about 1 hour and 30 minutes. We recommend wearing non-slip shoes like sneakers for the climb.👟👟

Yamagata Retrokan (formerly Yamadera Hotel) is a building that reopened in 2012 as a museum exhibiting the pen drawings of Taisaku Yuki on the site of an inn that was open until 2007.
It was an old-fashioned inn that evoked the Showa era, which is becoming rare these days✨
It had a quiet, relaxing, nostalgic feel.

Mysterious⭐️I went to Yamadera Temple~
#0yentravelautumn #yamagatatourism #templevisiting
A sacred mountain of the Tendai sect in Yamagata Prefecture, representing the Tohoku region. It is famous as "Yamadera" (mountain temple), but its official name is Hojusan Risshakuji (mountain temple).
I had heard that the stairs here are difficult...💦, but I was excited to go!
Unluckily, on the day I visited, a linear rain band came and an alert was issued for Akita and Yamagata.
Hmm... should I give up? I thought, but the rain kept getting stronger and weaker, so I climbed with the hope that maybe the rain would weaken!
It's true that the mountain path is lined with stone steps. This is... difficult...💦
In the rain, I climbed silently, looking only at my feet so as not to slip. Of course, I didn't forget to take pictures along the way, and struggled with an umbrella in one hand.
Finally the summit.
I had heard that climbing will erase your worldly desires... and it certainly made me feel refreshed, and all the hardships I had gone through when climbing were blown away, so I'm glad I climbed! ! is all I can say.
It's a temple with mysterious powers. The temple at the top isn't particularly spectacular, but the other temples along the way and the surrounding scenery all combine to make Yamadera so appealing.
Comfortable walking shoes are a must! Please give it a try.
Where Nature's Beauty and Hot Springs Meet Tradition
#japan #japantrip #yamagata #yamagatawonders
Yamagata Prefecture is a captivating region in Japan known for its stunning natural landscapes, rich history, and deep cultural traditions. Famous for its mountains, Yamagata is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering skiing in the winter and hiking in the warmer months. Mount Zao, with its iconic "snow monsters" (ice-covered trees), is a major draw for visitors, as well as its relaxing hot springs (onsen) after a day of exploring.
The prefecture is also renowned for its agricultural produce, particularly cherries, often called the “king of fruits” in Japan, and high-quality rice, which is used to make some of the best sake in the country. Additionally, Yamagata is home to the centuries-old Yamadera Temple, a peaceful mountain retreat with incredible views after climbing its 1,000 stone steps.
What makes Yamagata special to me is its blend of natural beauty and tranquility with a strong sense of tradition. Whether it’s through its temples, festivals, or hot springs, Yamagata offers a peaceful, yet enriching experience, perfect for those looking to immerse themselves in both nature and culture.

📍Yamagata: Pancakes like a picture book
I found a great cafe on my trip to Yamagata, so I'd like to introduce it to you!
This is Mitsuba Garden Cafe
It's a place where you can eat thick pancakes that look like they came out of the picture book Guri to Gura✨
They have simple pancakes with butter, and pancakes with toppings, so you can choose according to your taste!
The inside of the store is calm, and the garden outside is stylish!
Please go and check it out!

🕰️Business hours: 11:00-18:00 (L.O.17:00)

[Self-driving in Sendai] The beautiful scenery of "Yamadera" next to Ginzan Hot Spring, a good place to go in August 2024
Many people go to Ginzan Hot Spring, but I would like to share that if you drive from Sendai to Ginzan Hot Spring, you can visit the "Yamadera" on the way, which is about 1.5 hours' drive away. This temple is really beautiful and the scenery is amazing! The air is also super clean and fresh, but you need to reserve at least 2-3 hours for viewing and going up and down the mountain. Take JR
It’s also easy to reach Jinming! 🫶🏻🫶🏻#August Good Place 2024
