Stay in a 60-acre forest sanctuary at Cangshan Mountain, where Dali’s 20°C summer is truly comfortable
🌲 Foreword
July in Dali is an underrated summer retreat paradise.
While the whole country is like a sauna, at the foot of Cangshan Mountain it’s only 20°C, and you still need a quilt at night.
This time, I didn’t go to the crowded Erhai Lake but dove straight into the forest of Cangshan Mountain for a few days of true escape from the world.

🏔️ Cangshan Mountain: Dali’s Natural Air Conditioner
📍 Location: Dali City, Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture
Cangshan’s nineteen peaks each hold surprises.
In summer, Cangshan is a huge natural oxygen bar, with over 90% forest coverage, and it’s 5-8°C cooler inside than at the foot of the mountain.
🌿 Recommended routes:
Route 1: Gantong Cableway → Qingbi Stream → Cangshan Grand Canyon

The Cangshan Grand Canyon is spectacular, with cliffs and rushing streams, perfect for stunning photos.
Route 2: Ximatan Main Cableway → Ximatan → Qilongnu Pool
Difficulty: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Requires stamina)
Ximatan Main Cableway is the longest cableway in China, over 20 minutes from the foot to the summit, with breathtaking changing scenery.
Ximatan is a high mountain glacial lake, surrounded by wildflowers in summer, like a fairyland.
Qilongnu Pool consists of seven tiered pools with crystal-clear water, perfect for cooling off by wading in summer.
Route 3: Wuwei Temple → Yinxian Stream
Difficulty: ⭐ (Super easy)
Wuwei Temple is a thousand-year-old ancient temple with very few visitors, very peaceful.
Surrounded by towering trees, it’s very cool in summer, ideal for daydreaming or meditation.
Nearby Yinxian Stream is shallow and clear, great for kids to explore.
💡 Cangshan Tips:
It’s 5-8°C cooler on the mountain than at the foot, bring a warm jacket;
UV rays are very strong, so sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses are a must;
Yudai Road is 11 km long, go at your own pace, and take the cable car down if you get tired;
Don’t take wild paths, stick to the boardwalk for safety.

🌳 Forest Sanctuary at the Foot of Cangshan Mountain
Besides the main scenic spots, there are many beautiful, less crowded hidden gems at the foot of Cangshan.
1. Jizhao Nunnery
📍 Under Shengying Peak, Cangshan
Known as "China’s Most Beautiful Nunnery," the entire temple is filled with succulents and flowers, like a secret garden.
No incense is burned here, only flowers are grown, creating a wonderful atmosphere and fantastic photo opportunities.
The vegetarian meals here are delicious, 20 RMB per person, self-service, and remember to finish your food to avoid waste.
2. Boluo Temple
📍 Under Xiaocen Peak, Cangshan
Even more off the beaten path than Jizhao Nunnery, with very few tourists.
The temple is built halfway up the mountain with excellent views overlooking the entire Dali basin.
There are several century-old trees in the courtyard; sitting under them in summer drinking tea and listening to the wind and birds is very calming.
3. Mocan Stream
📍 At the foot of Cangshan
A stunningly beautiful stream with crystal-clear water, perfect for wading and exploring in summer.
The banks are lined with large trees providing cool shade, ideal for picnics, daydreaming, or reading.
Very few people visit, mostly locals, giving a feeling of exclusive sanctuary.

🍃 Xizhou Ancient Town: Bai Ethnic Style and Slow Life
📍 Location: Xizhou Town, Dali City
After descending from Cangshan, you can visit Xizhou Ancient Town.

✨ Must-experience:
· 🏠 Yan Family Courtyard: A representative Bai architectural complex with three lanes and one screen wall, four-sided courtyards with five patios

· 🐎 Horse-drawn carriage tour of the ancient town: Leisurely and atmospheric
· 👗 Wearing Bai ethnic costumes for photos: About a few dozen RMB per set, looks stunning in pictures
💡 Xizhou Tips:
The ancient town is free to enter; Yan Family Courtyard ticket is 30 RMB;
Best to visit in the morning when it’s less crowded and cooler, and the light is great for rice field photos;
Xizhou’s ice pops are delicious, especially the rich milk flavor.
