Why come here?
Nanfang'ao is a fishing port where life and the sea are inextricably linked. I entered the port on a beautiful morning: the sky was a saturated cobalt blue, the hills lined up behind the harbor, and the fishing boats seemed to breathe slowly in the sunlight. Reaching the Nantian Temple, I heard several sounds simultaneously—gongs and drums, engines, seabirds, and old songs playing from the betel nut stand next door. This feeling of "human life is busy, but the gods are close" is why I love Nanfang'ao.
⸻
A brief history of Nantian Temple (explained in plain language)
• The initial inspiration: In 1946, a fisherman near the port was rescued from danger, and the locals vowed to build a temple to thank Mazu. Construction began in 1950, and the temple was completed on November 18, 1956, becoming a vital center of faith for fishermen before and after their voyages. • Rear Hall and Golden Mazu: Construction of the rear hall, modeled after the Quanzhou style, began in 1990. The top floor houses a golden Mazu statue. Common sources indicate this golden Mazu weighs approximately 203.8 kilograms of pure gold and is about 90 centimeters tall, making it one of the earliest temples in Taiwan to have a golden Mazu statue. After its completion, it became a must-see attraction for pilgrims and tourists.
• Jade Mazu: The second-floor hall features a giant jade Mazu statue, carved from green jade and crafted by a renowned Hualien master craftsman. Weighing several tons, it creates a striking contrast with the golden Mazu on the third floor.
Summary: Nantian Temple is not just about "glittering gold"; it tells the story of how a fishing village made peace a part of daily life.

Best Way to Visit: My 45–60 Minute Itinerary
1. Enter the temple courtyard from the main gate on Jiangxia Road → First, look up at the details of the roof ridge, then enter the main hall to offer incense, letting your nostrils be enveloped by the cool sandalwood fragrance.
2. From the first to the second floor, view the "Jade Mazu" → The giant green jade displays different shades of green under natural light; remember to walk around it.
3. At the top, pay homage to the "Golden Mazu" → Keep the rules in mind and slowly appreciate the craftsmanship: the face is gentle, the clothing intricate, and the gold shines warmly rather than glaringly. I've noted the sources for common claims about weight and height above.
4. Return to the temple courtyard and listen to the sounds of daily life → As the harbor breeze blows, you'll suddenly understand: the prayers for peace here aren't just touristy phrases, but rather a ingrained habit of the fishermen every day.

A brief aside: My "Nanfang'ao Sea Breeze Day"
After leaving the temple courtyard, I walked to the fishing harbor, bought a cold winter melon tea, and watched the boats tending their nets along the embankment. The midday clouds, like cotton balls, cast shadows rolling across the mountainside, and the harbor surface shimmered. I secretly wished: next time, I'll come during the northeast monsoon to hear the real waves.

Practical Tips (Details to avoid pitfalls)
• Worship etiquette: The Jin Mazu Temple is a key area; check the signs before taking photos. If there is a religious ceremony, just follow the volunteers' route.
• Parking: Jiangxia Road's alleys are narrow; it's recommended to park on the outer perimeter and walk into the harbor.
• Weather: Strong sunlight in summer; bring water and sunshade. Strong northeast monsoon winds in winter; be aware of gusts at the viewing platform.
