Yangquan Cangshan: A Millennium Secret Where Loyalty and Nature Intertwine
I heard that Yangquan Cangshan is not only naturally beautiful but also rich in historical and cultural heritage. Filled with anticipation, I set off from thousands of miles away to visit this famous mountain full of stories.
Upon entering the Cangshan Scenic Area, the first thing that caught my eye was a clear stream, its water gently flowing with small fish happily swimming beneath the surface. I couldn’t help but squat down and touch the cool water, instantly washing away the fatigue of the journey. Walking along the winding mountain path, lush trees lined the way, with sunlight filtering through the leaves, creating patches of light. Occasionally, a mountain breeze rustled the leaves, as if softly whispering ancient tales.
As I continued, I arrived at Dripping Water Rock. This natural cave is 30 meters deep, with water dripping continuously year-round. In the scorching summer, the water flow is even more abundant, bringing a refreshing coolness. The dazzling waterfall resembled the legendary Water Curtain Cave, making me stop to admire and marvel at the wonders of nature.
Climbing further, I encountered the ancient Elm and Locust trees embracing each other—a spectacular sight symbolizing the passage of time and resilience. Not far away stood the Cangshan Shrine, with all its pavilions and halls built against the mountain cliff, harmonizing perfectly with the natural scenery. Stepping into the shrine felt like traveling back over 2,600 years. I seemed to see Cheng Ying sacrificing himself for Ji Zi, secretly hiding the orphan Zhao Wu in Mount Yu for 15 years, deeply feeling the spirit of loyalty and righteousness.
At the South Heavenly Gate, the peaks of Cangshan stretched out before me. The pale red granite mountains, segmented by green vegetation growing in the crevices, were fully exposed under the summer sun. On the steep cliffs, the Cangshan pines grew stubbornly, like tall, strong men—lean yet powerful, stern yet robust. Standing at the South Heavenly Gate, I felt as if I were floating, almost able to grasp the sun and moon, never before feeling so close to the heavens.
During the visit, I also learned about the close connection between Cangshan and the story of the Orphan of Zhao. To protect the orphan, a group of heroes sacrificed their lives for righteousness. First, the orphan’s mother hanged herself to ease Cheng Ying’s worries; Han Jue, understanding the greater good, released Cheng Ying and the orphan before committing suicide; Cheng Ying gave up his own son, taking the blame for harboring the orphan; and Gongsun Chujiu, an elderly man, took on the guilt of hiding the orphan and died by hitting the steps... These stories deeply moved me and gave me greater respect for Cangshan.
Unconsciously, evening fell, and I left Cangshan with reluctance. This trip not only allowed me to appreciate the natural beauty of Cangshan but also to feel its profound historical and cultural heritage and spirit of loyalty. I believe the scenery and stories of Cangshan will forever remain in my memory, inspiring me to uphold justice and loyalty in life.

2. Core Attractions
Cultural Classics
- Cangshan Shrine and Orphan’s Cave: The core cultural attractions of the scenic area. The shrine consists of Wenzi Shrine, Baoen Shrine, Qizhong Shrine, and others, all built against the mountain cliff with magnificent architecture. The murals vividly depict the tragic story of searching for and rescuing the orphan. The Orphan’s Cave is a naturally formed rock niche, with hidden, deep inner caves. Inside, the scene of Zhao Wu’s concealment is recreated, making visitors feel as if they have traveled back a thousand years to experience Cheng Ying’s loyalty and courage.
- Two-Dragon Wall and Wooden Archway: Inside the mountain gate, the Ming Dynasty Two-Dragon Wall is carved from thirteen stones, vividly depicting two dragons playing with a pearl—a rare and precious folk art. Opposite stands a wooden archway built during the Ming Wanli period, inscribed on both sides with “Canggu Shengjing” (Orphan’s Sacred Place) and “Ancient Jin’s Great Prospect,” reflecting the scenic area’s deep heritage.
- Hugging Orphan Peak and Hu Peak: Hugging Orphan Peak rises alone, with a large stone figure holding a smaller stone figure on top, resembling Cheng Ying nurturing the orphan Zhao. Hu Peak, shaped like a chopping axe, stands over 1,100 meters high. From afar, it looks like a minister holding a tablet in homage. The late Ming poet Fu Shan praised it with the poem “Loyalty in Jin’s mountains is also respected; the southern peak’s tablet faces the tower.”
Natural Wonders
- Immortal Peak Ecological Area: The core area of the back mountain, with a very high forest coverage rate. A 2-3 hour hike crosses the primeval forest, where you might encounter squirrels, golden pheasants, and other wildlife. Visit the Drinking Horse Pool waterfalls and Black Dragon Pool, with emerald-green waters reflecting the mountains. In summer, scoop water to cool off and relax. Hidden route: Descend via the small path on the right side of Lotus Temple to reach a wild kiwi forest, where you can pick fruit for free in November.
- Dragon and Phoenix Pines and Longhu Mountain: At the scenic area entrance, the thousand-year-old Dragon and Phoenix Pines stand guard. The dragon pine twists and coils, while the phoenix pine stands gracefully, protecting this land of loyalty. Longhu Mountain faces north and south; the north mountain resembles a flying dragon, and the south mountain sits like a stone tiger. Known as “The Two Mountains Guarding the Gate,” the terrain is extremely perilous.
- Popular Adventure Attractions: The glass walkway hangs suspended over the canyon, with deep blue pools below. It challenges your courage while offering panoramic views. The 5D suspension bridge features special effects, thrilling every step—perfect for thrill-seekers.
