These places have been my personal hidden gems for a long time. Each one is so comfortable you won’t want to leave. Weining The first time I visited Weining Caohai, I was stunned by the vast and peaceful scenery. This is the highest-altitude freshwater lake in Guizhou. The average temperature in August is just over 20 degrees Celsius, and you might even need a light jacket in the early morning and evening. The best way to enjoy Caohai is to stroll slowly along the lakeside road or rent a bike for a ride. The water is clear, the aquatic plants lush, and the blue sky and white clouds reflect on the lake’s surface. Every photo looks like a masterpiece. The strong breeze by the lake is incredibly relaxing, as if it blows all your worries away. At sunset, the whole lake turns a warm orange-red. The beauty is hard to put into words. The local specialties are Weining ham and buckwheat crisps. Any small street shop will serve delicious food. Prices are really low. A hearty local meal for two costs just a few dozen yuan. At night, you can stroll around the county town. There’s none of the noise of big cities, just the unique charm of a small town. Yichun Many people associate Yichun with winter snow, but August is actually the perfect summer escape. Known as the “China forest city,” it has an extremely high forest coverage rate. The whole city feels like a huge forest park. Walking the streets of Yichun, the air is filled with the fresh scent of pine. One breath feels like a full lung cleanse. Wuying National Forest Park is a must-visit. Towering red pines block out the sky, and sunlight filters through the leaves, creating beautiful dappled light. Walking on the forest boardwalk, you only hear the wind and birdsong. The peacefulness is deeply healing. Yichun’s blueberries are in season in August. They’re large, sweet, and unbelievably cheap. Jingxi Jingxi is on the Guangxi border. Many know Guilin but not Jingxi, yet its mountains and waters rival Guilin’s, even wilder and more natural. Tongling Grand Canyon is Jingxi’s most breathtaking attraction. Waterfalls plunge from cliffs, mist fills the air, and standing at the canyon bottom looking up, the overwhelming grandeur leaves you speechless. The canyon is cool and refreshing, with no sign of summer heat. Equan is like a living pastoral painting. The spring water is crystal clear, aquatic plants sway with the current, and old farmers lead cattle across stone bridges. Time seems to slow down. You must try Jingxi’s sour pickles and rice noodles. The sour and spicy flavors are especially refreshing in summer. There are few tourists here, and commercialization is low. Many places still retain their original natural state. You can take photos without avoiding crowds and shoot however you like. Zhouning Zhouning is the highest-altitude county town in Fujian. Summer temperatures average just over 20 degrees Celsius, and you need a blanket at night. It’s a true natural air-conditioned town. Jiulongji waterfall group is the largest waterfall cluster in East China. The nine-tiered waterfalls cascade powerfully. Walking up the boardwalk, the roar of water fills your ears, and the spray cools your skin. It’s very refreshing. Liyu Creek is another special spot in Zhouning. The creek runs through the village, with schools of carp swimming in the water. On both sides are quaint traditional houses, and villagers wash clothes and chat by the creek. The simple, rustic lifestyle is very touching. Zhouning’s costs are among the lowest in Fujian. Accommodation and food are very affordable. Mountain potatoes and mushrooms are local specialties. The ancient villages here are also very charming, not overly commercialized, allowing you to experience the simple and honest folk customs. Yichun When people think of Yichun, they often think of hot springs, but in August, Mingyue Mountain is highly recommended. Hike and breathe in the fresh air. The Qingyun Plank Road at the top offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. At the foot of the mountain, in Wentang Town, you can soak in selenium-rich hot springs to relieve fatigue. The local Tuzha rice noodles are also delicious; you must try them. Chongqing Summer in this mountain city can be a bit hot, but it can't stop foodies! There are so many delicious foods here: hot pot, Chongqing noodles, hot and sour rice noodles… every single one is irresistible. The night view of Hongyadong is indeed beautiful, but I recommend going during off-peak hours, or viewing it from the opposite bank of the river for a better perspective. The Liziba light rail passing through a building is also a must-see; experience the magical transportation system of this mountain city. Changsha, the city of happiness, truly lives up to its name! You can stroll along Orange Isle and enjoy the river view, and hiking up Yuelu Mountain isn't too tiring. The main attraction is the food! Stinky tofu, sugar-coated glutinous rice cakes, Cha Yan Yue Se (a popular tea brand)... I feel like I could stay here for days, trying different things every day. In the evening, stroll around Wuyi Square and feel the city's vibrant energy. Nanchang Nanchang, the heroic city, is perfect for visiting in August and September when the autumn air is crisp and clear. You must climb Tengwang Pavilion to enjoy the panoramic views and experience the poetic imagery of "the setting sun and the lone wild goose flying together, the autumn water merging with the vast sky." It’s the largest waterfall group in East China, and it’s not an exaggeration. Walking along the trail, you’ll see ten tiers of waterfalls stacked one after another. The most spectacular drop is 176 meters. Standing on the viewing platform, the mist drifts like fine rain, instantly cooling the air by several degrees. The village’s Carp Creek is also fascinating.
