The trip takes about 30 minutes. The shuttle bus pass costs 35 yuan per person and is valid for three days. Admission: B-line combo ticket costs 136 yuan per person, covering the four main scenic spots: Bajiaozhai, Tianyi Alley, Chili Peak (including Camel Peak), and Zixiadong, valid for three days. Activities: Tianyi Alley is known as the "world’s narrowest alley," 238 meters long, with the narrowest part only 0.33 meters wide—just enough for one person to pass sideways. The walls are vertical like they were cut by knives, and looking up you see only a sliver of sky. Walking through it is very impressive and it’s one of Langshan’s most recognizable photo spots. Tips from personal experience: There are fewer people before 10 AM, making it better for photos. Visitors with a larger build should turn sideways and hold in their stomach to pass the narrowest part. The whole walk takes about 40 minutes. [Langshan Town, Chili Peak Scenic Area, Xinning County, Shaoyang City, Hunan Province] 2:00 PM–5:00 PM Transportation: Take the shuttle bus from Tianyi Alley to Chili Peak, about 15 minutes. Admission: Included in the B-line combo ticket. Activities: Chili Peak is about 380 meters high and a typical sandstone peak forest of Danxia landforms. It looks like a giant red chili pepper and is very distinctive. We recommend hiking the lesser-known route from Chili Peak to Camel Peak to Linjiazai, about 3–4 hours with moderate difficulty. Along the way, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of Danxia. Camel Peak consists of four peaks shaped like a camel, with excellent views from the top. Visitors with average fitness can just take photos at the viewing platform. Tips from personal experience: The afternoon light casts a slanting glow on the red Danxia cliffs, perfect for photos. Bring plenty of water and snacks as there are no supply points on the mountain. The "99 steps" section is steep; hiking poles are recommended. [Xinning County, Fuyi River Scenic Area, Shaoyang City, Hunan Province] 5:30 PM–7:00 PM Transportation: Take the shuttle bus from Chili Peak to the Fuyi River dock, about 15 minutes. Admission: Bamboo raft drifting is included with the A-line combo ticket. If you have the B-line ticket, you need to buy the bamboo raft ticket separately on site. Activities: Take a bamboo raft down the Fuyi River for about 1.5 hours. The Danxia peaks on both sides reflect in the clear water, with the General’s Rock and Camel Peak reflections like a painting. The Dongkou high-speed rail station has a shuttle bus departing daily at 8:20 AM from Langshan North Gate and returning at 2:50 PM from Dongkou Station. All travel is official and regulated; avoid unlicensed vehicles and private charters. Within the scenic area: Be sure to buy the shuttle bus pass for 35 yuan per person, valid for three days, connecting all main attractions. The distances between spots are long, so walking is not practical. Accommodation recommendations Choose lodging near Langshan North Gate Visitor Center, within walking distance to the scenic area entrance, dining, and shopping. Recommended are Juyatang Guesthouse (600 meters from North Gate), Xiaobaihua Resort Hotel (near the scenic area entrance, good conditions), and Shanxiyuan Boutique Guesthouse (4 minutes from Tianyi Alley). 01 Luoyang | Henan When visiting Luoyang with kids in August, don’t just focus on the Longmen Grottoes under the hot sun. My approach is to explore the Longmen Grottoes in the morning, arriving right at the 8 AM opening. Walk from the West Hill grottoes to the East Hill grottoes, which takes about two hours. Kids can see the Vairocana Buddha and enjoy the breeze by the Yi River. Head back to the city for lunch and have a bowl of beef soup with shredded pancakes near the Old Town Cross Street. The soup shops there offer filling meals for about 20 yuan per person. The afternoon sun is strong, so head straight to Wangcheng Park, which has plenty of shade and animals to see. Kids can easily spend the whole afternoon there. ⚠️ There are no sunshades at the Longmen Grottoes, so bring plenty of sun hats and cold water. I skipped Guanlin this time because tickets are pricey and kids aren’t very interested in ancient buildings. It’s better to save time for a walk in Luopu Park. 🚄 Take Luoyang Metro Line 1 to Wangcheng Park Station. The park entrance is right outside, and it’s stroller-friendly. 02 Xiangyang | Hubei In Xiangyang, I only visit Gulongzhong, but before you go, consider this: it’s best for kids in elementary school or older who can understand Three Kingdoms stories. For younger kids, it’s mostly just hiking. Arrive at the scenic area by 8:30 AM, take the sightseeing bus to Sangu Tang, then walk slowly to Caolu Pavilion and the Hexagonal Well. The whole route takes about two hours. For lunch, try the farmhouse dishes outside the scenic area, especially the stir-fried cured meat with bamboo shoots—it’s reliably tasty. The Tianshu Gorge boardwalk is short and can be done in an hour, with few visitors and peaceful surroundings. Manchuan Pass Ancient Town still has old bluestone streets and red lanterns hanging from houses. It’s quiet at dusk, perfect for a slow stroll. ⚠️ Baita Temple is small and can be seen in 10 minutes. Don’t expect too much; just check it out if you’re nearby. 🍜 The town’s potato rice cakes are worth trying. Made fresh to order, they’re sticky and chewy, especially delicious with spicy vinegar sauce. 6️⃣ Lanzhou | Gansu Lanzhou’s summer coolness is the kind where it’s hot under the sun but cool in the shade — classic northwest style. Bai Ta Shan Park is perfect at 4 PM. It takes 20 minutes to climb to the top, where the wind is strong enough to blow right through you. The Yellow River flows below, with Zhongshan Bridge opposite. ⏰ The wind by the Yellow River is most comfortable from 6 to 8 PM. Many people bring small stools to sit and cool off. I also bought a cup of Sanpaotai for 10 yuan a bowl, with free refills until dark. The provincial museum is worth visiting but ⚠️ it’s closed on Mondays, so don’t go for nothing. The museum’s star exhibit, the Flying Horse of Gansu, is on the second floor in the bronze horse hall. Afterward, stop by the gift shop for a Flying Horse ice cream, 15 yuan, with a rich milky flavor. 🍜 For dinner, go to Dazhong Alley for beef noodles. Order “two thin noodles, extra chili, extra garlic sprouts.” It’s 8 yuan a bowl. After eating, you’ll feel completely refreshed. 7️⃣ Weihai | Shandong Weihai’s sea breeze carries a salty coolness. Chengshantou is the easternmost point of China’s coastline. In summer, the sea wind is so strong it’s hard to stand. You need a windbreaker to watch the sunrise in the morning, with temperatures around 20 degrees. You need to take a 20-minute boat ride to Liugong Island. The island has plenty of shade and is cooler than the city. The Jiawu War Museum is worth seeing but ⚠️ closes admission at 4 PM, so don’t arrive late. Huaxia City is a man-made attraction. Honestly, I don’t recommend going just for it, but it’s okay if you have kids. The first archway of Huaxia inside is impressive, but tickets are pricey and the value is average. 📍 My favorite spot in the city is Huanhai Road. Walk east from Xingfu Gate along the coast. The strong wind and waves make for a refreshing two-hour stroll. 🍜 Seafood in Weihai is cheap. A plate of steamed scallops at a roadside stall costs 20 yuan and is so fresh and sweet you don’t need any sauce. 8️⃣ Guangzhou | Guangdong Guangzhou’s summer is truly hot, but those who know how to enjoy it can still find cool spots. Baiyun Mountain is the locals’ backyard garden in summer. After 5 PM, the wind starts to cool. Enter from the west gate and the path to Mingzhu Tower is the most comfortable, with dense shade blocking the sky. Don’t visit Canton Tower during the day — it’s hot and expensive. ⏰ After 7:30 PM, the tower lights up with the Pearl River night view. The wind blows through the top, much cooler than at ground level. Chen Clan Ancestral Hall is the kind of place where you don’t want to leave. The old building naturally stays cool. The breeze under the stone-carved eaves is refreshing, perfect for zoning out. Chimelong Tourist Resort requires mental preparation in summer. It’s very crowded, and waiting two hours to play for three minutes is normal. If you must go, ⚠️ buy fast-track tickets online in advance. The time saved lets you enjoy two more rides. 🍜 After visiting Canton Tower, go to Huachenghui nearby for a bowl of sweet soup. Mango pomelo sago costs 12 yuan, ice-cold and refreshing, reviving you with every bite. Streams run alongside the trail, so kids can stop and play in the water anytime. ⏰ In the morning, head toward Dachao Yang Temple. The stone steps are gentle, and the shade is dense. It takes about an hour to reach Wanghai Temple. A 5-year-old can climb it alone. 🍜 The pig’s trotters in Beizhen County at the foot of the mountain are famous. They’re braised soft and flavorful. Paired with a bowl of rice porridge, kids get messy but love it. In the afternoon, go toward Qingyan Temple but only walk the front mountain. The back mountain stairs are steep, so don’t force it with kids. ⚠️ Mosquitoes are fierce in the mountains. Long pants and insect repellent are essential. No need to rush.
