Why is the Guanshiyin Bodhisattva in Putuo Mountain, the East China Sea, called the Guanyin Bodhisattva in the South China Sea? Guanyin Bodhisattva is not Chinese. His hometown is located in the southern seaside of Putuo Gaya, India, so it is commonly known as the Guanyin Bodhisattva in the South China Sea. Why does Putuo Mountain become the Dojo of Guanyin Bodhisattva? This requires us to dream back to Datang. During the Tang Xuanzong period, the Japanese monk Hui Xuan drifted across the sea to Datang to learn the scriptures. At that time, he went to Wutai Mountain and saw a beautiful statue of Guanyin Bodhisattva. He planned to bring this Guanyin to Japan for worship. At that time, Dongdu Japan's sea exit was in Ningbo, Zhejiang, and they sailed to Zhoushan Islands after they went to sea. Suddenly, the sky changed, stormy rain, lightning and thunder, and the sea miraculously rose a piece of iron lotus to prevent the sea ship from moving forward. Hui Xuan monk also understood that he felt that Guanyin Bodhisattva did not want to go far from China to Japan. The Buddha's purpose was not to violate, so a group landed in Zhoushan and built a monastery to worship Guanyin Bodhisattva. Until today, there is still a "reluctance to the Guanyin Academy" built by Guanyin Bodhisattvas who did not want to Dongdu at that time.
