This is NOT a get up from Jumeirah to drive to kind of place. It’s good but NOT nearly that good. In fact, in the few times I visited this restaurant I haven’t once walked out thinking – damn, that was good. This is very much the ugly girl you wake up with after a crazy night of binge drinking and think what have I done, dear God, what have I done? Afghan Khorasan Kabab House no doubt has the look and feel many from this region will relate to and feel nostalgic about, home sick even. It’s actually very typically Afghani. You sit there half-expecting a flamboyantly decorated truck with ‘Love God’ written on either side of the rear, swing-out doors to drive up and park outside. And then of course you have the idiocratic extremes like waiters taking orders on tablets yet receiving the bill on a scribbled piece of paper. And the ‘no spitting’ sign in the hand wash area. And yes, I agree that all this does add to the overall ambiance but does it make the food any better? No, what it does is guilt-trips you into being more forgiving. And no, it doesn’t make the food any better. So if you want some of the most delectable Afghani kababs this side of Kandahar then run, don’t walk, to Wakha behind Lulu Hypermarket in al-Barsha-1. Or if you’re more inclined towards the Pakistani element of Afghani cuisine, a good Karahi for example, then Des Pardes in Oud Metha is where you want to go. And if, as mentioned above, it’s the sights, sounds and smells you relish – well, Des Pardes pretty much has that area covered too.
