Devil Island, formerly Pelican Island, is located in the center of San Francisco Bay, California, USA. Although it is only a short distance from San Francisco, the island is surrounded by rugged rocks and cold water. Because of its special geographical environment, the island was set up as a prison by the federal government in 1934 and closed in 1963 because it could not sustain its expenditure. In the meantime, almost all of the most notorious heavy criminals in American history had spent time in prison on Pelican Island. This is actually the origin of the name "Devil Island". It can be said that the people detained on Devil Island are all criminals among criminals, which makes people shudder. But now it's just running as a tourist attraction, so don't be so afraid. After becoming a prison, the Devil Island is heavily guarded, and there are numerous cruel tiger sharks lurking in the sea below the cliff. During the 29-year existence of the Devil Island Prison, 36 escapes were recorded, but most of them were captured. Five others were unaccounted for. Officials suspected that they were buried in the turbulent and cold sea. Nevertheless, there are still people who have successfully retreated from Devil Island prisons, such as Mafia Godfather Kabon and Communist Frey. In fact, today's Devil Island prison has become a tourist attraction. When you climb up the ramp along a signpost and drill into a mossy tunnel, you can come to the former Cell House. Narrow cells line up the corridor, one by one. You can directly feel the loss of freedom in living between the iron fence and the three walls. After visiting Devil Island, I found that it was not as gloomy as I had imagined. Maybe it's because there are too many tourists, haha. If there were no tourists with me, I would really be afraid.
