On December 12, 1848, the National Assembly designated the "Elysee Palace of the State" as the presidential palace of the Republic. Marshal McMahon, who succeeded him as President, moved there in 1874 and promulgated a decree establishing the Elysee Palace as the official residence of the President of the French Republic.
