The predecessor of the European Parliament was the Parliament of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), which was established in 1952. At that time, it was composed of 78 parliamentarians from France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. In 1962, it was renamed the European Parliament. It was one of the three major organs of the European Union (the Council, the European Commission and the European Parliament). It was the legislative, supervisory and advisory body of the European Union. It is located in Strasbourg, France.
