This shrine is best known from its appearance in the film Memoirs of a Geisha, it is the red shrine the young girl runs through spinning the poles. Fushimi Inari was the shrine that bought me to Kyoto, and it was well worth the trip. The shrine is build at the base of Inari Mountain, and leads to an extensive network of smaller shrines throughout the mountain. I'm sure I did not see all of them on my three hour hike, but the views were stunning, and the place felt charged with spirits.

My husband and I went at dusk. Still a few people crowded around for photos but once you’re past them it’s clear sailing to the top of the mountain. Absolutely beautiful, there were multiple rest areas to grab something to drink or prey. Lights were lit along the way so it was easy to keep our footing.

Lovely place with the tori gates. I especially enjoyed the slow climb up with my friends on New Years!

This is probably Kyoto's most famous tourist sights. To get pics with no crowds, you have two options - waking up super early or heading all the way up! The torii (red gates) keep going for kilometers, all the way up the mountain, taking in some spectacular viewpoints over the city along the way.

A wonderful experience. Make sure you go to the top! There are lots of good opportunities for the famous photo shot if you get past the tourists.
