格鲁吉亚国家博物馆是外高加索地区最大的博物馆，展馆面积虽然不算大，但对于像格鲁吉亚这样的小国来讲，能成体系的展示国家的历史和文化，已经相当不错了。地下一层展出的是古代金银器和宗教文物，时间跨度从公元前一直到苏占之前。一楼是古生物馆，刚进入古猿展厅就立刻被数十颗复原后的古猿和古人类头颅化石所震撼。二楼是苏占时期展馆，入口附近的显示屏循环播放着2008年南奥塞梯战争的视频，控诉着战争对无辜平民的残暴迫害，展馆整体设计成光线昏暗，气氛阴沉的环境，竟然将监狱牢门作为展厅装饰的一部分，通过照片、文字展示苏占时期的整个历史风貌。三楼是东方艺术馆，展出部分中国和日本的文物。博物馆可以拍照，工作人员并不会出面阻止，有很多文物是在没有玻璃罩保护下的赤裸展出，由于游客极少，方便近距离的欣赏各类文物。
