[View] Kanas Lake Kanas Lake is a famous freshwater lake in the north of Burqin County, Altay region, Xinjiang, China, with an area of 45.75 square kilometers, an average water depth of 120 meters, the deepest reaches 188.5 meters, and the water storage reaches 53.8 billion cubic meters. The shape is crescent, which is presumed to be caused by the strong movement of ancient glaciers blocking the water in the valley. In Kanas Lake, there is a legendary lake monster red fish infested, which is said to be 10 meters long. Some scientists speculated that it was a large freshwater carnivorous fish, Zheluoqi, which has not been supported by actual observations. Kanas Lake is an alpine lake formed by the glacial action of the Quaternary, and was named the most beautiful lake in China by National Geographic magazine in 2009.
