The Strait of Gibraltar (Strait of Gibraltar , Latin for Fretum Herculeum) is the only channel between the southernmost part of Spain and northwestern Africa, and is the only channel between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean, together with the Mediterranean, which forms the natural dividing line between Europe and Africa. The Strait of Gibraltar, which is passed by many ships daily and can reach 100,000 a year, is one of the busiest passageways in international shipping, with important economic and strategic status and is known as the “lifeline” of the West.
