Before the construction of Puyou Temple, Chengde had three royal temples, and there were a large number of lamas. In order to strengthen the links between the Mainland and Mongolian and Tibetan areas through religious channels and improve the cultural quality of the lamas, the Qing Dynasty established the Kamakura (the affiliated school of the temple) of the lamas in the east of Puning Temple in the 25th year of Qianlong (176o), which became the later Puyou Temple. In 1964, the temple was destroyed by lightning and most of the buildings were destroyed by fire. At that time, only the mountain gate and four pavilions were left. The renovated temple was officially opened to visitors on June 27, 1996.
