Circular road US89 offers access to both craters and sunset (south) Wupatki site (north) easily accessible from flagstaff or Grand Canyon. The view from the room is very dramatic. The Sunset Crater is large and many other smaller volcanic cones are also visible nearby. It is easy to pass along the rugged lava on both sides of the trail. It is quite surprising that the lava in the middle and the imagined block of crater that collapsed from it 1,000 years ago and the other cones of the sunset! It is not a lava that flows as an explosive growth. There was a more challenging vertical tracking of a conical standard room with great views. There was a wooded building in the visitor center which was a fairly interesting display and forest. Descriptive markings were also great. One fee ($20.00 per car) covers both places. Plan to spend a day exploring both places, especially if you do some walking trails. The drives are absolutely beautiful from one end to the other: the changing scenery is memorable too.
