Tayao Cave (Grotto 39) Review

The pagoda cave cave is located on the west side of Datong Yungang Grottoes, which belongs to the caves dug in the late Northern Wei Dynasty (end of the fifth century AD). The scale is not large. The stone carvings of the Buddha statues have been completely Chineseized and closer to ordinary people.

Late Yungang Grottoes are mainly concentrated in Grottoes 21~45, including Grottoes 4 in the eastern region and Grottoes 14 and 15 in the central region. Grottoes 39 are also called Tayao Caves, which are the largest caves in the western caves. The cave doors are arched and decorated with honeysuckle grains. Two bright windows are opened above the caves. The central five-level tower is 6 meters high. The square tower is opened on all sides of each floor, and the statues are made in each. The square columns with harvest points are carved between the walls and cages. The wide height between each floor is smaller than the lower floor, and the stable and beautiful. The accurate engraving and complete preservation of tower pillar building components is an important data for studying the early pagodas in China.

云冈石窟第39窟，又称塔窑洞，西部窟区规模最大的洞窟。圆拱形窟门，窟门上方两明窗。中央置五级方塔，高六米，方形塔基。每层的四面开龛，各开龛间，调出有收分的方柱，柱上雕枋。各层均出秘檐、瓦楞，檐下施一门三升与人字型形拱。窟内四壁雕刻千佛，与中央方塔浑然一体，堪称云冈最后的经典。
