William Wallace Statue Review

Edinburgh, England, has countless squares and statues, art and history coexist. This William Wallace Statue is worth visiting along the way. It is beautiful when the sun is shining.

In 13th century Scotland, Wallace rose to overthrow the mighty English army just outside Stirling where he had his finest victory – the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297. All did not go easily for Wallace after that though, for the following year he lost a battle at Falkirk and a price was placed on his head. In hiding for years, he was eventually captured in 1305 and taken from Scotland to be hung, drawn and quartered in London for treason – a charge he robustly denied as he reminded the English that he had never sworn allegiance to an English king!The 4 quarters of his body was returned to Scotland to be displayed on 4 burgh walls. This is why we have no grave for William Wallace. His death was to be a show of strength and empowerment of English domination, however, it did not have the desired effect. Scotland once again was to meet the English in battle…this time led by King Robert the Bruce.Today William Wallace stands guard at the Edinburgh Castle entrance

The statue of William Wallace is at the Royal Mile, street performances are everywhere, you can visit many stalls along the road at will, the exhibition makes reading more about the historic buildings and William Wallace, the spiral staircase is challenging, but once you reach the top, the scenery is well worth a look
