Cathedral of Toledo
No. 1 of Best Things to Do in Castilla-La Mancha

Cathedral of Toledo

7.7
4.7/5
198 reviews

The Cathedral of Toledo is a church that retains its medieval appearance to this day. As the second-largest cathedral in Spain, it was once the primary cathedral of the Spanish Christian archdiocese when first completed. The main structure features Gothic style, while its interior decor incorporates artistic elements such as Mudéjar, making it a vast architectural complex that blends multiple artistic styles. The Cathedral of Toledo is the seat of the Cardinal Archbishop of Spain. From 1088, it was granted the title of "Primatial Cathedral" by the pope, giving it a special status among Spain's many cathedrals. The current structure began construction in 1226, a project that spanned over two centuries until the central nave vault was completed in 1493, marking the completion of the main body. It adopted the French Gothic architectural style, which was rare in Spanish churches at the time, while incorporating local artistic elements such as Mudéjar and other regional features. Completed in 1493, the cathedral fully embodies the unique Spanish Gothic artistic style in its architecture. The bell tower on the left side of the church's main entrance stands approx. 90 m tall, housing a massive bell weighing over ten tons. The main hall measures 112 m in length, 56 m in width, and 45 m in height, supported by 88 large stone pillars. The main hall and its surrounding 22 small chapels form the most lavishly decorated section of the entire complex, with the five sets of colored pinewood carvings depicting Jesus's life on the main altar being particularly magnificent. Additionally, the choir loft is another highlight of the church. Located at the center of the main hall, the choir's two rows of seats are masterpieces of Spanish woodcarving—the upper row in Renaissance style and the lower in Gothic, blending harmoniously. The upper row features carvings of saints, while the lower row depicts historical scenes from the Reconquista's capture of Granada.

Puerta del Sol

Puerta del Sol is the central square of Madrid, surrounded by many historic buildings. The square is now a venue for major parades and gatherings as well as a place for citizens and visitors to relax and entertain. Whether day or night, it is always crowded and full of vitality. Public square buildings Puerta del Sol is semicircular, surrounded by buildings, many of which can be called the essence of Madrid's urban architecture. To the south of Puerta del Sol stands the iconic old post office building (La Casa de Correos). This ancient building on the square is red and white, resembling a majestic palace. The clock tower in the center of the building is very famous. Every New Year's Eve, people in Madrid gather here. At the stroke of midnight, they eat 12 grapes symbolizing good luck to celebrate the arrival of the new year. "Zero starting point marker" On the pedestrian walkway in front of the post office building, there is a sign marked "0 starting point" (Kilómetro Cero). All highway milestones across Spain are calculated outward from here, and the street numbers in Madrid also start from this point. "Bear and raspberry statue" The iconic "Bear and Strawberry Tree" statue (Estatua del Oso y el Madroño) in Madrid is located in the eastern part of Puerta del Sol. This statue replaced the remains of the former Puerta del Sol gate and is now a highly popular city symbol of Madrid. The charming little bear stands upright with its front paws holding the strawberry tree in front of it, appearing remarkably lifelike. Today, this spot is also a meeting place for many locals. Statue of Charles III On the west side of Puerta del Sol stands the equestrian statue of Charles III (Estatua ecuestre de Carlos III), next to which is a large fountain surrounded by colorful flowers, with steps around it for visitors to rest. In addition, the Sol subway station building on the square is itself a highlight, its arched glass structure glistening in the sunlight, and its avant-garde shell-like shape stands out among the traditional classical buildings around the square. Public square events You can freely admire the sights and take photos in the square, or sit by the fountain, feed the pigeons, and enjoy wonderful street performer shows. The area around Puerta del Sol is also a commercial district, where you can find Sephora, Springfield, and the Real Madrid flagship store, and you can also see the building topped with the Tío Pepe sherry neon billboard. El Corte Inglés is also just steps away. The road to the north of the square leads to Gran Vía, while the Callao commercial area lies to the west, making it a great place for shopping. In addition, the alleys south of the square are home to many bars and cafes, which are very characteristic of Madrid and affordably priced. You might want to try the experience of beer paired with tapas (Madrid bar snacks). Midnight views Puerta del Sol is also particularly lively at night. As the lights come on and the crowds surge, Puerta del Sol at this moment perhaps better captures the essence of Madrid's nightlife. The street youths showing off their dance moves, the sentimental saxophonists, the whispering couples... all form a beautiful sight. If you happen to come here at midnight and face the still-crowded square and the waves of cheers, please don't be surprised. This city is telling you in its own unique way: Welcome to Puerta del Sol, welcome to the sleepless Madrid!

Douro River

Douro River

7.4
4.8/5
12 reviews

The Douro River originates in the mountains of northern Spain, flowing westward through northern Portugal for nearly 900 km before finally merging into the Atlantic Ocean in Porto. Porto thrived because of this river, with its old town cascading along the northern slopes and the Gaia district on the opposite bank. The name "Port" wine comes from Porto, as it was historically shipped from the wine cellars across the river to destinations worldwide. The river's striking landmark is the Dom Luís I Bridge, completed in 1886: a double-deck iron arch structure designed by engineer Théophile Seyrig, who once partnered with the designer of the Eiffel Tower. The upper deck accommodates pedestrians and the subway, while the lower deck is for vehicles and pedestrians. The Ribeira Quay at the bridge's northern end is one of the oldest parts of the old town, where waterfront houses and narrow alleys belong to Porto's historic center, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. Today, this riverside area is bustling with bars and restaurants, making it a lively spot in the city. On the southern bank, the Gaia riverside is home to numerous Port wine cellars, many of which offer tours and tastings. The river also features traditional flat-bottomed wooden boats called "rabelos," which for centuries transported Port wine from upstream vineyards to this location. For a different perspective of the city, take a river cruise from the Ribeira or Gaia docks. The round-trip boat ride takes approx. one hour, passing under several bridges and offering a unique view of the old town and wine cellars from the water. In the evening, the bridge and riverbanks provide open vistas perfect for sunset and night views. A westward stroll along the river leads to the estuary where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. The Ribeira area is crowded with travelers—vibrant but busy—so those seeking tranquility might prefer walking toward the estuary. With ample time, venture further inland along the river: the upstream Douro Valley, covered in terraced vineyards, is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the origin of Port wine. During the late June Festa de São João, traditional wine boat races take place on the river, creating a festive atmosphere.

Lisbon Oceanarium

7.2
4.5/5
120 reviews

The Lisbon Oceanarium is one of Europe's largest marine life aquariums, housing thousands of marine animals and plants across hundreds of species. Creatures from oceans worldwide swim together here: sharks, rays, barracudas, groupers and moray eels dart about, while the slow-moving ocean sunfish often captivates visitors for extended periods—this giant bony fish, extremely difficult to keep in captivity, is one of the facility's signature residents. The main tank is surrounded by four habitat exhibits: the rocky coasts of the North Atlantic, Antarctic shores, the temperate Pacific's giant kelp forests and the tropical coral reefs of the Indian Ocean, separated only by massive acrylic panels. No matter which level visitors view from, the same "open ocean" reappears from fresh perspectives, creating an illusion of one continuous marine environment rather than isolated exhibits. Sea otters are another star attraction, with their dexterous feeding habits drawing crowds, while penguins and puffins each have their devoted fans. The aquarium's mascot is a sea otter named Vasco, paying homage to Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama. The Ocean Building is connected to the administration building by a bridge, symbolizing the ramp people will walk along to embark on an unforgettable journey to explore the fascinating marine world. A moored ship, ready to set sail. The Ocean Building is surrounded by water and boasts unique architectural features, evoking two captivating images: an island standing in the middle of the ocean and a docked ship, ready to set sail and embark on a journey of exploration. The design of this building aims to host an exhibition that always surprises visitors. All four sides of the building mimic the geological formations of coastal areas and blend with the recreated view contours inside, which can be seen through the glass walls. To better showcase various views, the building's glass walls are coated with a film that filters sunlight of different intensities. The magnificent main aquarium holds approximately 5 million liters of water, representing the global ocean and hosting over a hundred species from the four major oceans. Surrounded by four distinct marine habitats, the aquarium creates the illusion of being in a single, unified ocean. The exhibition covers terrestrial and marine ecosystems, as well as various environments, ranging from the North Atlantic habitats to tropical habitats formed by the Indian Ocean, and further to the Antarctic coastal zones and the giant kelp forests commonly found in the temperate Pacific regions.

Toledo Cathedral, the second largest church in Spain, is located in the center of the ancient city. In the 6th century, the Goths built a religious temple here; in the 9th century, the Moors converted it into an Islamic temple; from 1226 to 1493, it was converted into a Catholic church. The towering bell tower, the magnificent vault, the wide and majestic nave, the chapel surrounded by stars... each piece of rare treasure has created an exquisite masterpiece of Gothic architecture and has become a timeless classic landmark of the ancient city. The 90-meter-high bell tower of the church is the highest point in the ancient city. Walking through the narrow streets, looking up... you can always see her and you will not get lost. In the Town Hall Square in front of the cathedral, there are often street performers with self-assured expressions, adding a bit of elegant artistic atmosphere.

I drove from Madrid to Cordoba and visited the ancient city. Due to time constraints, I only visited the cathedral, the San Martin Bridge, and the observation deck. This ancient city is still worth a day to visit.

The view from here is amazing! You can view it from both under and above the bridge, and both offer different views so I recommend it. I especially recommend taking the metro to the top to enjoy the view!

The Lisbon Oceanarium is excellent value for money and a perfect rainy-day pick if you want to see impressive marine life. It’s one of Europe’s largest indoor aquariums, with a huge central tank featuring sharks, rays, sunfish, and tuna, plus diverse habitat zones. Plan 2–3 hours; adult tickets are around €25 but can be discounted depending on promos. Nearby, you can ride the cable car and explore Parque das Nações
