Forte de Sao Miguel

Forte de Sao Miguel is a historic coastal fortress located on a high promontory in Nazaré, Portugal. The fort was originally built in the 16th century to defend against maritime attacks, and was later renovated and expanded in the 17th century, forming an irregular fortress layout adapted to the promontory terrain. Its thick stone walls, demi-bastions, and arched entrance showcase the characteristics of traditional military architecture, and a stone statue of Saint Michael the Archangel along with related inscriptions are preserved above the entrance. A lighthouse was installed inside the fort in 1903 and still serves as a coastal navigation signal today. Today, this fortress has become a space for historical exhibitions and marine culture displays, housing the Nazaré Canyon Interpretive Center and a surfing-themed exhibition that introduces the seabed topography, the phenomenon of giant wave formation, and the development of the sport of surfing. Built on a cliff, the fort offers an expansive view, overlooking North Beach, the Atlantic coastline, and the surrounding waters. It is also one of the spots to watch the giant waves of Nazaré, which present a spectacular natural scene as they surge toward the cliffs. Historical relics, the lighthouse, and the marine view together constitute its main features.Nazare · 11 km from Alcobaca

Beautiful landmark Lighthouse on the edge of the cliff above the north beach at Nazare with stunning views of the XXL waves in season. Small though so avoid busy times especially in high surf season. Also windy up there.

Obidos, north of Lisbon, was once ruled by the Moors and ancient Rome, leaving behind many historical buildings. In the 12th century, the king at the time gave it to the queen because he loved it. After that, Obidos became a town inherited by successive queens. The Santa Maria Church in the town is the holy place where the king and queen got married. The cobblestone road spirals up and leads us to the city gate. The beautiful white-bottomed blue-flowered painted tiles are very eye-catching. Climb up the walls around the castle and you can see far away. The main street is full of souvenir shops, restaurants, and stalls selling Ginja. This brandy produced in Obidos is cherry wine served in chocolate cups. It costs 1 euro a cup. It has a strong fruity flavor and is mellow and delicious. Obidos is very popular with tourists because of its beautiful scenery.
