Across the street from Maria Theresa Square, Vienna's Heldenplatz is the outer square of the Hofburg Palace. Built during the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I, it formed part of the incomplete "Imperial Square." To the northeast lies the Hofburg, to the southeast the Neue Hofburg, and to the southwest the inner ring road separates it from the "outer city gate." The northwest, devoid of buildings, offers a superb view of the inner ring road, the Reichstag, the City Hall, and the Burgtheater. Two equestrian statues of military leaders, Prince Eugene of Savoy and Archduke Charles, dominate the square. The entire square is a site of history, art, and politics, a spacious, solemn, and magnificent spectacle.
