Contrary to popular belief, we weren't greeted by a line of unsuspecting locals upon arrival. Instead, a woman, supposedly from Yunnan, offered us chilled towels, water, and pure coconut ice cream—apparently made entirely from natural coconuts, and incredibly delicious. A large bird stood facing the sea. The island felt peaceful, simple, and natural; we didn't dare disturb it at all. Compared to the hustle and bustle of Beijing, this was paradise. The beautiful, pristine white sand beach was unlike any artificial beach found on newer islands. Countless fish, including manta rays and small sharks, could be seen beneath the pier.
