Old Town

4.5/5
77 reviews
Old Town was founded in the 7th century and is situated on a limestone peninsula on the Adriatic coast, known as the "Pearl of the Adriatic." The old town is surrounded by well-preserved medieval walls. Walking along the walls offers panoramic views of the stretching red-tiled roofs, monastery bell towers, and the azure waters of the Adriatic Sea. Walking the walls is an unmissable experience when visiting this ancient city. Entering from the Pile Gate on the west side, you are greeted by the Stradun, the main street that runs through the old town, lined with buildings showcasing a variety of architectural styles, including Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque. The Minceta Fortress at the northwest corner of the walls is the highest point, offering views of the entire old town and the distant sea. Outside the walls, the Lovrijenac Fortress stands on a seaside rock and is another great spot for overlooking the panoramic view of the old town. Known as a "city museum," this old town is also the main filming location for "King's Landing" in the TV series "Game of Thrones," and you will often encounter familiar scenes while strolling through it.Croatia · Dubrovnik

Sea Organ

6.1
4.8/5
46 reviews
Sea Organ is a sound art installation on the promenade at the western end of the old town of Zadar, Croatia, designed by architect Nikola Bašić. It looks like a row of white marble steps extending into the Adriatic Sea, but the mechanism is hidden beneath them. Dozens of pipes of varying lengths and resonators are embedded in the steps. As waves surge in and out, they push air into the pipes, producing deep, long-lasting notes. The steps are tuned to different pitches, so the melody changes subtly as you walk along the promenade. When the sea is calm, the sound resembles the humming of a bottle being blown into, steady and gentle. When the waves are rough, the tones become rapid and undulating, with almost no two "performances" being exactly the same. This is also a popular spot in Zadar to watch the sunset. The steps face the open sea, and in the evening, you can sit on them to listen to the organ harmonize with the sound of the waves, watching the sunset paint the sea orange-red. Around sunset, it is often crowded with tourists and locals. There is no need to rush away after dark. Nearby is the "Greeting to the Sun," a circular light installation created by the same designer. It lights up with flowing patterns at night, and together with the music here, the dynamic light and static sound perfectly round off the evening by the sea.Zadar · 68.6 km from Bristane

3.9/5
26 reviews
Trogir Old Town is situated on a small island on the Dalmatian coastal region of Croatia, connected to the mainland by a short bridge at one end and to the island of Čiovo at the other. It takes just over ten minutes to walk from one end of the small town to the other. Since its founding by the Greeks, it has endured for over two thousand years, with its medieval street layout and stone architecture preserved almost intact. Narrow alleys connect churches, noble palaces, and squares of various sizes, where Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance facades often appear on the same street. The Cathedral of St. Lawrence is the architectural heart of the old town. Its main entrance portal was created by the sculptor Radovan and is carved with biblical scenes, months, and labor motifs. You can climb the adjacent bell tower to overlook the sea of red-tiled roofs and the Adriatic Sea. The Kamerlengo Fortress at the western end of the old town was built by the Venetians. Walking a loop along the walls and towers offers a panoramic view of the entire old town, the yacht marina, and the coastline, making it a great spot for photography. The seaside promenade on the south side is a favorite gathering place for locals in the evening. One side is lined with yachts, while the other is filled with cafes and restaurants where you can sit down and taste authentic Dalmatian cuisine. Small shops in the alleys sell handicrafts and local specialties. When visiting, you might want to slow your pace; corners like the City Loggia and the Čipiko Palace, which are easily overlooked, also hold the details of the old town.Trogir · 43.9 km from Bristane
Ban Jelacic Square

Ban Jelacic Square

5.9
4.2/5
56 reviews
Ban Jelacic Square is the central square of Zagreb, located at the junction of the Upper Town and the Lower Town. Multiple tram lines converge here, and the blue trams passing through the square are a highly recognizable image of the city. The square is named after the 19th-century Croatian Ban Jelacic, a national hero who ordered the abolition of serfdom in the same year he took office. The equestrian bronze statue in the center of the square was created by Austrian sculptor Anton Dominik Fernkorn in the mid-19th century, depicting the Ban with his right arm extended and holding a saber. This statue was once removed from the square due to historical changes, but it was returned in 1990 and is now one of the symbols of Zagreb. The square's predecessor was a market that formed spontaneously at the foot of the old town in the 17th century. It was initially called "Harmica," derived from the tax that had to be paid to sell goods in the market at that time, and it was renamed to its current name in 1848. The buildings surrounding the square were built in different eras, with facades of Classicism, Art Nouveau, and Modernism appearing together, making it worth walking around the square to compare them in detail. The Mandusevac Fountain on the east side was originally a spring that provided water for the entire city. Legend has it that in ancient times, someone asked a girl named Manda to scoop water from the spring, and the local phrase for "scooping a handful of water" is said to be the origin of the city name "Zagreb." Today, the spring has been built into a small circular fountain. This is the customary meeting place for the people of Zagreb. When locals say "meet under the clock," they are referring to the old clock near the statue. The square is bustling with people during the day, and it remains lively at night, illuminated by lights and the surrounding cafes. The square itself is a pedestrian zone where cars are not allowed. Shops and cafes line Ilica Street on the west side, and the slope to the north leads to the Upper Town. The nearby Dolac Market is easy to visit along the way, making this an excellent starting point for planning your sightseeing route.Croatia · Zagreb

Saint Mark’s Church

4.4/5
83 reviews
Saint Mark’s Church is located on St. Mark's Square in the Upper Town of Zagreb, Croatia. It is the parish church of the old town, with a history dating back to the 13th century. In the second half of the 14th century, it was rebuilt into a late Gothic three-nave church, with sturdy stone pillars supporting stone rib vaults, creating a simple and solemn interior. A major iconic feature of the church is its tiled roof with colorful patterns. The tiles are arranged into two coats of arms: one side features the historical joint coat of arms of Croatia, Dalmatia, and Slavonia, while the other side displays the coat of arms of Zagreb, featuring a white castle. The patterns are vivid and striking, serving as an iconic symbol of Zagreb in tourists' photos, and can be easily captured from the square. The exquisite Gothic portal on the facade is believed to be the work of the Parler family stonemason workshop in Prague at the end of the 14th century. Above the niche are statues of Saint Joseph and the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child, with Saint Mark and the lion visible below, flanked by the Twelve Apostles. The northwest exterior wall of the church also features the ancient coat of arms of Zagreb, carved in 1499. The interior of the church displays works by the Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović. The large crucifix above the main altar and the Pietà sculpture nearby are both his creations, complementing the medieval stone space.Croatia · Zagreb

Cathedral of Zagreb

5.3
4.3/5
72 reviews
Cathedral of Zagreb, officially known as the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is the cathedral of the Catholic Archdiocese of Zagreb and a highly recognizable landmark of the city. Its history dates back to the end of the 11th century. The Diocese of Zagreb was established here around 1094, marking the beginning of the city's recorded history. The existing structure is primarily Gothic. The 1880 earthquake caused the nave to collapse and severely damaged the bell towers. Afterward, architect Hermann Bollé led the restoration in a Neo-Gothic style, erecting two spires over 100m high on the facade. This height is quite prominent among religious buildings in Croatia and can be seen by looking up from many street corners in the old town. The 2020 earthquake damaged the spires again, and the church immediately underwent restoration once more. There is much to see inside: the sacristy contains frescoes painted in the 13th century, considered one of the earliest surviving church paintings in northern Croatia; Renaissance pews, a Baroque marble pulpit, and a marble altar remain in use today; and the mid-19th-century organ is equipped with over 6,000 pipes. The church also houses the sarcophagus designed by sculptor Ivan Meštrović for Cardinal Stepinac. This Croatian cardinal, who was beatified in 1998, has made this a place of pilgrimage for many believers who visit specifically for this purpose. The church is surrounded by Renaissance walls and towers built to defend against the Ottoman army. Their outlines remain intact to this day but are often overlooked by tourists. The Fountain of the Virgin and Angels in front of the church is also the work of Bollé and is a popular attraction.Croatia · Zagreb

Town Square is located in the old town of Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, and is one of the area's important public spaces with a long history. The square is small in scale, with a rustic environment rich in historical charm; the surrounding streets and traditional buildings preserve the old town's historical character. The striking view in the center of the square is the Robba Fountain, which was designed and created by the Italian sculptor Francesco Robba and is an important representative of Baroque art in Ljubljana. The fountain's overall design is exquisite and solemn, with a trefoil-shaped stone basin as its base, topped by an obelisk approx. 10 m high, forming a well-structured and proportionally balanced architectural composition. The base of the monument is decorated with three river god statues carved from Carrara marble, each combined with elements such as dolphins and water jugs, showcasing delicate carving craftsmanship and distinct classical artistic features.Slovenia · Center District

Diocletian's Palace, located in the heart of Split's Old Town, is more of an old town than a palace. Two-thousand-year-old stone walls have blended into cafes and residential buildings; the clock tower, a later addition, offers panoramic views of red rooftops and the Adriatic Sea. The cellars now house souvenir stalls, the air thick with the scents of stone and olive oil. A few meters apart outside the south water gate, the masts of yachts and ancient Roman columns create a sense of time standing still. It's usually quite crowded, but in the evening, after the tourists have left, it quiets down, and you can hear your own footsteps on the cobblestone streets.

The free-to-open Old Town of Dubrovnik is a living medieval museum! 4.4 points, 72 reviews, the cobblestone road connects the Pile Gate, the Cathedral, and the Catalan Avenue. It is a check-in spot for tourists during the day and a place for locals to live at night. Don't just chase the same style as "Game of Thrones", go into the alleys to find the handmade olive soap sold by the old lady, and watch the locals basking in the sun in the seaside cafe for an afternoon. The soul of the old city is hidden in these fireworks details. It is on the list of water play and summer vacation, because even the sea breeze brings a comfortable factor🌊

There are some white stone steps built on the coast of Zadar. They don't look special, but when the sea rises to the right level, listen carefully and you will find that the sea is playing a wonderful music for you. This is the sea organ.
