Cromwell is situated in the arid basin of Central Otago, New Zealand, surrounded by the Pisa and Dunstan mountain ranges. Multiple highways converge here. Heading west through the Kawarau Gorge leads toward Queenstown, north goes to Wanaka, and south reaches Alexandra. Travelers on a self-drive tour of the central South Island often use this town as a hub for a stopover. The town enjoys plenty of sunshine and is dry with little rain, earning it the reputation as New Zealand's fruit bowl. Cafes, galleries, and craft shops are nestled among weathered stone walls and old wooden houses, and the giant fruit sculpture at the town entrance, erected to celebrate the orchard industry, is a popular photo spot for many visitors.Cromwell · 1.4 km from downtown

The Skyline sits on top of Bobt's Peak in Queenstown, a location overlooking downtown Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu and the mountains beyond. It takes about 10 minutes to walk from the city to the cable car ride point, and take the cable car in the southern hemisphere to the top of the mountain. The sightseeing corridor on the second floor offers a 270-degree panoramic view of the town, and the scenery at sunset is even more intoxicating. The Sky Cable Car is a highly comprehensive attraction. Arrowtown is a century-old town that rose to prominence during the gold rush. In 1862, gold was discovered in the Arrow River. After the news spread, thousands of prospectors flocked to this valley, and the town took shape. At its peak, the population was several times larger than today's permanent population. Today, more than 60 wooden and stone buildings from the gold rush era are still preserved, many of which have been converted into cafes, craft shops, and boutiques, keeping the vibrant atmosphere of the old street alive. The essence of the town is concentrated on the main street, Buckingham Street, where a row of Victorian-style buildings houses an array of craft shops, candy stores, and specialty boutiques. The rows of trees along the street turn golden and orange between April and May, covering the entire old street in rich fall colors, making the town a popular spot for fall foliage in New Zealand's South Island. Take a short walk along the Arrow River trail to visit the preserved Chinese settlement, where simple huts record the history of Chinese miners during the gold rush. Visitors interested in history may want to visit the Lakes District Museum & Gallery on Buckingham Street, which houses exhibits and stories from the gold rush era and offers information about tours of the historic buildings.Arrowtown · 31.1 km from Cromwell
Shotover Jet Queenstown

Shotover Jet Queenstown

4.8/5
194 reviews
Shotover Jet Queenstown is the iconic speedboating experience in Queenstown, operating continuously in the Shotover Canyon since the 1960s and having hosted millions of travelers. It is also the only commercial speedboat company permitted to operate in this section of the canyon river. The river channel was formed by years of erosion from rapid currents, with nearly vertical rock walls on both sides enclosing the water surface. Located less than a ten-minute drive from Queenstown town center, it is now owned and operated by the local Māori tribe, Ngāi Tahu, whose ancestors once traveled this waterway to gather food and greenstone. The bright red speedboats are locally built in Queenstown, specifically designed for the canyon river. Each boat can carry over ten passengers and is powered by twin V8 engines, using jet propulsion for movement, steering, and control—allowing it to skim at speeds of nearly 90 km/h in water as shallow as approx. 10 cm. The entire experience lasts approx. 25 minutes, featuring continuous sharp turns and cliff-hugging maneuvers from the moment you depart the dock. Skilled drivers take you at high speed through whitewater rapids and tight bends, performing thrilling close-to-the-wall stunts, including the signature 360-degree spin at full throttle, sending water splashing into your face as if the boat has lifted off the surface. Life jackets and storage lockers are provided on board. As the spins generate significant splashes, it is advisable to prepare to get wet. During colder seasons, extra attention to warmth is recommended.Queenstown · 42 km from Cromwell

Skydive Wanaka

Wanaka skydiving is one of the most unique and exciting experiences in New Zealand. Compared with skydiving in Queenstown, Wanaka skydiving does not see the bustling street scene, but has a wider view of natural scenery. When you jump from a plane at 15,000 feet and experience an exciting free fall, you can enjoy undisturbed views of New Zealand's highest peak, Mount Cook, the sapphire mirror-like Lake Wanaka and glaciers, Views such as rivers. SkydiveWanaka is a skydiving company based in Wanaka. It currently offers skydiving at two heights, taking off from 15,000 feet or 12,000 feet, respectively. After 60 seconds or 45 seconds of free fall, start a 4-5 minute landing flight. Choose a package with video recording. To experience Wanaka skydiving, you need to book in advance on the official website or find an agent, and then go directly to the skydiving center to report. SkydiveWanaka can also provide free transportation to and from Wanaka town. Skydive can only be done in fine weather. If the activity you booked is cancelled due to weather, SkydiveWanaka will reschedule the skydive time for you. If the time affects your subsequent itinerary, you can also choose a full refund. The skydiving center is located at Wanaka Airport. After checking in at the front desk, the staff will take you to the screening hall to watch the Chinese version of the skydiving explanation video, so that you can understand the precautions and do some standard actions. Then fill in the Chinese version of the safety instructions and risk responsibility notice. With the help of professional staff, you can put on the skydiving equipment, and then you can take the plane and set off. The accompanying coach and photographer will decompress you professionally. Once you reach a certain height, you can experience skydiving, all you need to do is jump with the accompanying instructor. In the process of free fall, the body cannot bend, it must be bowed to maintain stability, and the hands must be open. There is a lot of wind in the sky, and you can feel your cheeks being blown by the wind, which is very exciting. After dozens of seconds of free fall, the accompanying instructor opens the parachute and starts to glide in the air. The instructor will also make many large swings to increase the fun of skydiving. When approaching the ground, you must raise your legs as required, and leave the landing to the accompanying coach, because people without professional training are easily injured when landing. If you book a package with video recordings, you can wait about 20 minutes after returning to the skydiving center to get the edited skydiving video and photos.Wanaka · 34.6 km from Cromwell

4.5/5
167 reviews
RealNZ | Walter Peak High Country Farm is located on the southwest shore of Lake Wakatipu on New Zealand's South Island, facing Queenstown across the lake. Visitors typically take a boat from Queenstown wharf, with the approximately 45-minute lake cruise itself being a scenic journey. This highland farm has been settled by European immigrants since the second half of the 19th century, with its peak period spanning tens of thousands of hectares of pasture and tens of thousands of sheep. The Colonel's Homestead by the lake, built in 1902 with white walls and a red roof surrounded by garden lawns, resembles a fairytale castle from afar. The farm maintains authentic highland ranch activities: travelers can hand-feed shaggy Scottish Highland cattle with curved horns, as well as merino sheep, alpacas, and red deer; watch trained sheepdogs expertly herd flocks on the slopes, then catch a traditional sheep-shearing show at the outdoor theater. Those who enjoy riding can join a guide for a leisurely ride along the lakeside peninsula. After exploring, visitors can relax at the lakeside café with freshly baked English scones and hot tea. Backed by Walter Peak and facing the azure lake, the farm offers panoramic views of Queenstown and surrounding mountains - perfect for family-friendly outings and travelers seeking authentic New Zealand farm culture. As mountain weather changes quickly, remember to bring a windproof jacket.Queenstown · 42.7 km from Cromwell

Extreme sports that you must experience when you come to New Zealand! Adrenaline is soaring! I jumped down with the mentality of experiencing it once in my life, hahahaha. You have to weigh yourself before jumping. New Zealand's beef, lamb chops and salmon are so delicious that I am five pounds heavier than when I set out. . . After the jump, you can buy pictures or videos, which are very expensive, but they are also souvenirs. You will also get a T-shirt with a 43-meter bungee jump printed on it as a souvenir. If it is not open, there is a free shuttle bus to Queenstown.

A very unique steamship, still providing excellent service despite being over a century old. There are Chinese staff on board, and the buffet restaurant on the other side is quite good. Enjoy a relaxed and pleasant time in Queenstown.

Skydiving is super fun, 15,000 feet, the free fall feels like life is free! The package comes with a handheld camera, with photos and videos. After the jump, it will be sent directly to your email for you to download. It takes about 20 minutes to drive to the base.

The Skyline Gondola is the highest point in Queenstown, offering panoramic views of the town and the lake, a completely different experience from looking down from below. Lunch was also a good experience; the lamb chops were delicious. Many people say the menu isn't extensive, but most restaurants there serve similar dishes, so they're generally not that different. The main advantage was that I got a buy-one-get-one-free ticket, so lunch was essentially free.

It was February, the tail end of summer, and we didn't see anything particularly special. It was just a small town with a main street lined with various shops and a post office. There was a gold panning museum where you could pay to take a gold panning class and learn how to pan for gold. We took bus number 4 from Queenstown; it was only $2.50 one way, which was quite reasonable, and we considered it a chance to enjoy the natural scenery of New Zealand along the way.

It was definitely worth it. The driver was very passionate about his job, performing several 360-degree spins and speeding between cliffs – it was incredibly thrilling. There's also a bar and restaurant nearby with a great atmosphere and good value for money.

The environment is very dreamy. I think it is worth the money. But the bad thing is that children are not allowed to enter at night. I don't know why. But overall it is still a good experience.

After my NZONE in Queenstown was canceled due to high winds, I didn't give up and switched to SKYDIVE. The weather was fantastic that day, the staff were warm and friendly, and I even chatted with strangers who were jumping from the same plane. The view from a different perspective was amazing. Because I chose the highest altitude, I was the last person to jump. But aside from being really nervous the moment I jumped, the floating experience was incredibly fun! 🥳

From the first floor of the steamship, you can see how the steam is generated, and there are people responsible for burning coal. To be honest, the buffet wasn't very good; the dishes were mainly beef, lamb, and pork, with a small amount of vegetables and desserts. There wasn't enough variety or variety. However, the view and ambiance were excellent. The sheep shearing show was great; the staff worked very hard, which was commendable. However, it wasn't particularly entertaining. Overall, it's good for enjoying the scenery. If you book the BBQ meal, the meal lasts nearly 4 hours. It's worth experiencing.
