Fontana sits on Lake Laugarvatn, where geothermal heat has surfaced naturally since the settlement of Iceland. The steam bath is built directly over a working geyser, so you sit around a rumbling geyser that warmes the room with steam rising from the earth.
Fontana recently tripled in size. The expansion added infinity pools, a swim-up bar, a pier out over the water, a Finnish sauna, a cold plunge, and the geyser steam bath, along with redesigned changing rooms. Admission includes access to all pools, the steam bath, sauna, and cold plunge, plus shower and changing facilities with lockers. Shampoo, conditioner, and body cream are provided free of charge. Towels, bathrobes, and swimwear are available to rent.
While you're here, ask about the rye bread tour. Fontana bakes "rúgbrauð" the traditional way, buried in the geothermal ground by the lake and dug up hot. Featured on Netflix with Zac Efron and National Geographic with Gordon Ramsay. You can also book that tour right here on Get Your Guide.
