Beautiful city. It was the capital. Picturesque and nostalgic. Beautiful parks and promenades. Orthodox churches. Lovely traditional restaurants. There's a chocolate factory where you can buy chocolates and a musical instrument museum.
Reviews: Big Almaty Lake - azure eye of Alatau (+ Ayu gorge) half-day tour

Nur was amazing as our host, for the entire day. - Was in regular touch over whatsapp, before the tour day - Picked us up on the day of the tour right on time (we were 11 in all), in a clean, comfortable Mercedes van - Briefed us on the day and planned it out well - Shared everything he knew about Kazakhstan, about the Big Almaty Lake, the Ayu Gorge - patiently as we bombarded him with questions - Took stunning drone shots at the lake! - Took us to a lovely cafe (Tary) at the visitor center (expenses extra) - Brought along tea for all of us, which we had while overlooking the beautiful waterfall - And most importantly, was warm, cheerful, polite all through. Absolutely stunning experience. Highly recommended!
Reviews: Almaty Charyn Canyon National Park + Charyn River Valley Day Tour in Kazakhstan

This itinerary is well-designed, offering a little over 4 hours of activity. The canyon has two areas: the valley and the platform. The 1.2km walk from the entrance to the valley takes about an hour, allowing for sightseeing and photo opportunities. A rest stop at the end usually completes the round trip in about 2 hours. The platform offers a more spectacular view from its elevated position; a downhill walk also takes about 2 hours round trip. Hiking is usually the most convenient way to get there, while taking the shuttle bus back is the most convenient. However, during lunchtime (13:00-14:30), the shuttle bus stops running for an hour, which can be inconvenient for those with limited time. Many returning tourists (who need to get to other attractions like the lake) can't wait and walk or even run back, which is uncomfortable in the scorching sun. The platform shuttle bus is a 4-6 person electric vehicle. If there are no passengers on the outward journey, there will be no return journey. Some tourists take the electric vehicle, get off to take a few photos, and then return the same way, without having time to appreciate the platform's beauty – a real pity. Our driver/guide was a local who speaks Mandarin; he was very kind and helpful, making us feel at ease. The travel agency in Shandong was very responsible. They had a WeChat group before the trip to share information and ensure the trip went smoothly, which deserves praise.
